What cabals would I need to connect this THUNDERBOLT 2 ADD-IN PCI-E Card inside HPZ230?
I don,t suppose I could use this in their Gigabyte Titan Ridge 2.0 AIC, Thunderbolt3 PCIe 3.0 (x4), 2x Type-C, DisplayPort?I realise that if it could br fited in there it would only be Thunderbolt2 20gb
As you can add a Usb3 card to computers with only Usb2.

Issue is you need a motherboard with a Thunderbolt 2 header before any thunderbolt card will work and for the HP Z230 Workstation it's just too old for these new things.

Compatible list of motherboards can be found here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GC-TITAN-RIDGE-rev-20#kf

Same goes for Asus and any other vendors because you cannot get a standalone thunderbolt card that doesn't need a header on the motherboard.

So sorry to say it but it's either skip thunderbolt or new computer man.

Thanks for your reply but you can put one in there according to this.

I can see your point about the Thunderbolt3 one.

Then it most be HP's own OEM cards because I am not sure use can use retail cards.

It's unlikely that you would be able to do it, as all the PCIe based Thunderbolt cards require a special "TB-Header" which I don't think HP puts in their system and it even varies from board maker to board maker. The header is something like a GPIO/I2C interface, but so far no-one seems to know the exact spec of those headers outside of Intel and the board makers.
TB isn't very user friendly if it's not already built in to your system.

It does look like HP hard its own TB3 card if nothing else, but it seems to be limited to the HP Z4 G4 Workstation, HP Z6 G4 Workstation, HP Z8 G4 Workstation.

According to the HpZ230 site, it does have one E102 but I do not know where to find it on the motherboard. This is the SFF motherboard I can,t see one for the MT version
This guy is good,

It's just a normal pin-header, not something that would really stand out. There's really only very little data that goes over that cable. As far as what I understand it's mostly time sync data and some command information. For some reason that couldn't go over the PCIe interface.

The manual here suggests it should work with your system. Different kind of connector though, as it appears to be only two pins on your board.
$250 new though...

Wow that is expensive that is far to much for me .Even at that price it does not seem to come with a cabal to connect it to the header in the PC.Would this dell one be compatable? They look very simuler.
DELL THUNDERBOLT 2 ADD-IN PCI-E X1 CONTROLLER 07HMHP Network Card the Dell one £40 the seller said he took it out of a PC why did he not think to take the cabal that connected it in the board out to and seller them together?

What cabal would i need to fit to the header. in the case.?
The reason i am interested in Thunderbolt is that i have a lovely Apple Thunderbolt Display i also have the Apple thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter,I did not realise that you could add a thunderbolt PCI e to the PC.
I only got the PC a week ago.

There is this one from USA

HP Z240 Z440 Z640 Z840 Thunderbolt-2 PCI-E X4 Card - Display Cable, Bracket but i take it that would not be comparable.

You'd need the HP specific card, nothing else is guaranteed to work. Admittedly the Dell card looks identical, but the internal wire (as it's not really a cable) might not be the same.
Read the manual I linked to and you'll see what it looks like.
It's possible the display won't work properly, as there's no way of controlling it in Windows. Have a look around on the internet and you'll see there are some issues with several Thunderbolt displays on PCs.
