Time to buy a new laptop advice

Hi after some advice my dad's finally decided to buy a new laptop hes currently using a MEDION AKOYA P7618 17.3" Laptop MD977 Specs here

His budget is around £650 he just wants a better gpu so hes able to play some of the more up to date steam games are these any good?

Yeah hes used to a 17" screen so he wont go any lower

If you want to game, get a laptop, not a notebook, otherwise build a desktop.

Todays mobile pcs are notebooks which lack proper cooling to prevent thermalbuildup which cause cpus, ram, gpus to throttle.

There all way to expensive.

The games he plays are age of empires 2 a lot! But it would be nice to play a few more up to date games he like the total war series

Go used. I recently sold my MSI gaming laptop, 15.6" 1080p, i7, gtx 1060 3gb, on eBay for like $600-something.

i would say buy used.. now the 20xx series have arrived their are some nice 10xx series bargains to be had..

to call it a real gaming machine it needs to have at a least a 1060 card in it.. there are plenty of such machines on ebay..

I've had this laptop for over a year, and I love it. It has an LGA 1151 socket that can take up to an i7-7700, it can take up to 32GB of memory, it has two M.2 slots (one supports SATA), and it has a 4GB GTX 1050 Ti.

I currently have 12GB of memory, a 250GB 970 EVO, and an i5 6500T in mine. The CPU gets into the mid to high 60s under load, and the GPU gets into the mid to high 80s. When I first got it, I had spent $574 for the barebones version of the laptop, a Pentium G4560, 8GB of memory, and a 128GB ADATA SU800.

They have a newer model called the NB50TK1 which supports up to an i7 8700.

Be aware that most of the brands you recognize actually "make" a laptop. MSI does. We've had all our laptops custom built for the last 15 years or so and, contrary to what you'd expect, prices are comparable, even cheaper than the store bought models.

The models you listed are extremely limited.. single 8 Gb stick or RAM , low level CPU, 1050 ... 128 GB GFX card is too small. To be frank, a gaming laptop that one would be content with with for 3i4 years is going to run you £950 and up. Id look arnd foir Clevo distributor and have the shop build something to meet your exact needs,

Yes way over ya £650 budget and "listing" at £1,004 ... but a) it will remain useful far longer than the £600 models and b) Clevo prohibits distributors from advetising prices below a certain floor level, once you gat them on the phone, you can negotiate discounts.

i have just bought a couple of none gaming ebay laptop both work and look like new..

a lenovo x270 ultra book and lenovo x380 yoga.. the x270 cost me £275 and x380 £525.. quite a saving on the new prices (well over a grand each) and both are still under the lenovo warranty..

buy used every time.. no need to go too old a year old will produce huge savings..

look for 16 gig of ram.. a 1060 card and an ips display..

i am gonna put the x270 back on ebay i am not over keen on its TN panel.. the x380 yoga panel is superb..

Apart from the used marketing having endless possibilities, if you're after something new then for additional £50 can get you this:

The 1650 replaces the 1050 so it should perform equal to the 1050ti or slightly better.
I've got the 1050ti max-q and been able to play RE2 remake and Sekrio with mix settings perfectly fine running comfortably 40-60fps.
Any higher than £700 you'll be looking at price range for 1050ti, 1060 and 1660ti GPUs.

Still struggling he's compromised a bit now he's looking at 15" screens now is there much difference between a 1050 Vs 1060 GPU?

The 1060 is quite a bit better than the 1050. The 1050 Ti in my W650 performs similarly to a GTX 780, and I believe the GTX 1060 6GB performs about as well as a GTX 980.

Asus TUF series is very good budget option. Look at the 17 inch models 1650 and up.
