trying to fix a dropped rtx 2070

a friend gave me a 2070 today. turned out it had been dropped.

checking the photos from google the part that got broken off was not really a "essential" part of the pcb.

the card turns on. rtb turns on fans spin up then down during boot.

but no display. im using my 2070 super so i can check up on it.

shows up in gpu z but all the tick boxes besides opencdl are not checked.

i tried to download the vbios from it but it said "not supported"

frrom alot of trouble shooting it appears? that the card behaves the same if i plug in 2x6 pins as when i do 1x8 1x6. so maybe the sensing system? of the 8 pin is not working.

i checked but the sense pin of the 8 pin plug does connect to ground on the card.

if i check device manager sometimes no yellow question mark pops up. but it switched between either error 43 or error 31.

is there (maybe with a modded vbios) a way to disable the 8 pin check?

i know its "technically risky" but in scarce times as now its atleast better then nothing.

i tried booting ubuntu. and the card started displaying the boot screen but linux froze on something something journaled storage related (could tbh be my pc)

opun closer inspection with a group of people who work on pcb repair we found a single blown? up resistor on the 6 pin side of the card.

recommended me to desolder it since it had a direct short. the resistor according to them lead to a power cleaning circuit and it should not hurt the card if you have a good grade psu.

desoldering that lead to no change of behaviour.

i checked behaviour of leaving some of the pcie plugs unplugged and noticed the following

1x8 pin no 6 pin. rgb and fans turns on. no detection

no 8 pin with 6 pin leaves rgb on but no fans and no detection

2x6 pin instead of 1x8 1x6 lead to same behavior.

https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/204735/msi-rtx2070-8192-180925-1 this is the exact card in question.

anyone got any tips?

id suggest not running that card, & if you insist on running it, id atleast suggest not leaving it alone while running

damage that close to a power source/inlet could spell fire, & nothing is worth risking that
on that note, maybe baking it would help?

Have you checked the other side of the PCB? There's probably an open circuit in one of those 8 pins, if it is the soldering part baking should work, if not then you'll have to solder it yourself. Either way, keep an eye out when powering up that card as any short circuit could cause a fire.

Here the thing: You only know of one of several possible issues resulting from being dropped. As others have wisely stated it's a potential fire hazard. My tip is put it up for sale on Ebay as not working and disclose it's been dropped. At least you may get a small bit of $$$ from it.

As a musician I've had to deal with dropped band equipment over the years. Sometimes there's an easy fix, others it goes into the trash. I have two once very expensive power amps sitting in my basement that were dropped and no tech has been able to fix them properly. They work for a short while then something else goes bad with them. I only keep them for sentimental reasons (I used to sell them).

Try replacing that burnt Cap on the back, it's most likely related to power.

I think you’re on a hiding to nothing. Get rid of it.
And don’t bother trying to fix a hardware problem with a bios flash. That doesn’t fix anything.

gave baking it a shot actually. wrapped in tin foil then 200-230c for 15 mins on each side still no change in behavior

i'll let it sit for now and might check the connections again

my theory stands of it not knowing that the 8 pin is a 8 pin
