Unable to lower fan speed on my GTX 1050

Hello there!

So i bought a second hand Galax KFA2 GTX 1050 EXOC in order to play some older games until gpu prices come to msrp/below.

The problem is that i can't change the fan speed,it is by default set to 40%,no matter what software i use,Msi Afterburner,Nvidia Inspector,Evga precision, etc i can't set the fan speed to a lower value than 40%,i can increase it to 100%,but i can't turn it down below 40%.

Is there any way to change the fan speed to a lower value than 40%?

Like flashing another vbios, either the ''official vbios'' or from another manufacturer, like for example the msi gtx 1050 gaming x vbios which has a 0 fan speed if the temps are below 60 celsius?

Never flash a GPU without guidance

There are hardware limits to fan hubs/fan controllers on pcbs

Start with sticker pics from the card back and a gpu-z screenshot, then a screenshot of Ram/memory in the advanced tab of gpu-z.

check if its 2 or 3 or 4 pin connector. 2 pin usually dont have the idle-off feature unless you set up a custom external controller or someth with a thermistor that will be in charge of limiting/turning off the fan below certain temperature. Or u could put pwm (4 pin) fan that fits your card and run it off 1 of the motherboard connectors with an adapter (and define a low rpm curve in bios). Or, if your card has a pcb for a higher specced version (like for example it may have footprint for a 4pin connector, but only 2pin is soldered), if thats the case you could put the remaining smd components and then flash the bios from the higher specced version to obtain the full fan functionality. There are the 3 options, investigate you specific case prior to proceeding, else you could pretty well damage your card.

There is no way to change the speed without modifying the card physically. Primarily because the cooling assembly only has two wires (red and black) which means the fans have no PWM functionality.

You can circumvent this by using/modifying a PCI fan controller like one of these:

or one made by Zalman, Noctua or Gelid that looks like this:

Another way i know that the fans cant be controlled is because on Guru3D's review, the noise of the card never changes when its idling or gaming.

Worst case scenario - get a different graphics card or just wear headphones.

Older GPU's and the lower end ones such as the GTX 1050 don't turn off the fans even when there is no load on the GPU and it is running cool, this is a more modern feature and before that only on the higher end model of GPU's, the reason you can't go below 40% is to do with the voltage needed to keep the fan running optimally anything less than 30-40% and the voltage gets that low that the fan struggles to spin, then the motors would go as there is voltage running through it but not enough to keep the fans spinning, I have a similar problem with some cheapo case fans I bought, set them too low and they will stop and start trying to spin up and eventually wear the motor out

The SL b550 has a test function for that lol, finds minimum volts/rpm to keep them from stopping.
