Hi guys, looking forward to upgrading my system. Currently running on an i7-5820K (6 Cores, 12 Threads) OC'd to 4Ghz with 32Gb of RAM and a GeForce RTX 3070 card. I'm looking to upgrade my system to a Ryzen processor, new Mobo and RAM to get the most bang for the buck for no more than $500. I know my system can't max out my 3070 and hoping to get a few recommendations to a new processor, mobo and RAM to (a) get the max performance of the 3070 graphics card and (b) get as much performance as possible with the system for $500 or under. Thank you.

You COULD go am4, which'll be still a big upgrade but dead platform, blah blah or AM5 and save some more.

what ddr4 do you have ? there's an option to go for a 12th gen cpu and save on buying ddr5. However, if that's some old ass 2400/2666 ddr4, I wouldn't.

Ryzen 7500F (or 7600 non-X if you can't find 7500F for reasonable money/with reasonable warranty, or you want some sort of an iGPU) + whatever AsRock B650 motherboard having enough USB/PCI-e/audio/whatever ports you need + a kit of 6 GHz DDR5 of CL36 or lower. Pair it with a Peerless Assassin for a cooler.

Must be way below 5 Franklins in most countries. Even at this level, you will be bottlenecked by your RTX 3070 more than by anything else in almost any game (M$ Flight Simulator as one of examples of games where no CPU speed is enough).

NB: you need to configure your BIOS settings in order to get maximum value off your ware. PBO, XMP (DOCP), voltages, wattages, etc. It's not easy as pie but not rocket science, either.

I have 32gb of DDR4 2400. So again I'm looking for an upgrade path of up to $500 for a new mobo, processor and RAM to better compliment my RTX 3070 graphics card than the old i7-5820K I am currently using - I prefer a Ryzen setup to go to over Intel at the moment but any suggestions appreciated.

Thinking he can actually fit a 7700xt upgrade if he sells the 3070 and goes 12th gen+ddr4 route, that 8gb on 3070 is going to be a problem soon, if it isn't already, even at 1080p.\
12600kf+b660 d4 mobo+7700xt should be around 620-650 new, but if he can sell the 3070, then it will be under 500 net cost for the whole upgrade.

7700xt upgrade
This is a sidegrade AT BEST.

Let the OP have a reasonable purchase. RTX 5070 at the very least. By the time 8 GB becomes a real problem at 1080p everything below 4080 will be virtually obsolete. Currently, 8 GB is only a problem at 4K and let's be real, no 8 GB GPU could handle 4K well even if you double their VRAM count anyway.

If you want to go AMD, I would do this build....

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor ($181.95 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard ($149.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Silicon Power Value Gaming 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory ($89.97 @ Amazon)
Total: $421.91

Use the cooler that comes with the CPU and the money you save can be used for a new 1Gb or larger NVME drive.

For intel, I would do this build.....

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i5-14500 2.6 GHz 14-Core Processor ($239.97 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Silicon Power XPOWER Pulse Gaming 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6400 CL32 Memory ($94.97 @ Newegg Sellers)
Total: $474.93

I would use your 3070 until it starts to become an issue in 1080p, or you want to move up to 1440p gamming. But either way, I would plan on upgrading the 3070 to a card that has minim 16Gb of GDDR in the future.

Wait for Arrow Lake and Zen 5 X3D.

You will need new PSU.

Keep the 3070 until RTX 50xx releases.
