I been thinking if it's worth upgrading my Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 to a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450?

my E8400 is oc'ed to 4ghz 24-7 and i do some conversions and play any of the new games and i got a HD5770 Vapor-X 1GB as my main card and a 8800GT 512mb for PhysX/Cuda and atm i am playing everything in 1280x1024 because the 22inch screen i got from my uncle only did 1400x1050 when spec's was 1680x1050 that's my main size but if they don't replace it or give me a new one i am planning about buying a 1080p LED Monitor so should the Quad-Core with 12mb cache be a great performance speed for me in the long term?

I went from an E8600 (4GHz) to a Q9550 (3.8GHz) and noticed nothing on my old GTX260/HD4870. But, if i had my E8600 on this HD5850, i guess it would hold the HD5850 back.

All depends on how much your getting it for. You could always wait for 'bulldozer'. Everyone seems to be talking about that.

IMO it's close, and depends how the Q9450 clocks. If it can do 3.6GHz+ then yes it's worth the upgrade otherwise no, wait 'til you've more funds for i5, i7 etc..

Edit: High-clocked Duals are still great for gaming, I say clock it higher if needs be but otherwise stick with it.

Put that money towards a new monitor. Not enough games take advantage of quad core for the CPU to be your first upgrade unless you're switching platforms.

Depending what you use your PC for... MOST people would benefit from a higher clocked dual over a quad. UNLESS you a primarily render/endcoding.

NO! If you want a quad get a Q9650. In your case you want to get the same default clock speed and multi that you had before.

If you are going to go with a quad core on a LGA775 NB then you should look into a Q9650 They are the best of the LGA quads .

Heads up on the Q9650 vs E8400:
-Win7 still loads the same
-Photoshop does load faster and a tad snapper
-MediaShow does work faster now
-Some games do offer a higher frame rate but the game play is mostly similar
-The use of fraps to record videos for games is miles better now. 60 FPS is now possible in BC2
-Winrar works better and seems faster now
-Vantage score will increase do to the quad cpu score. GPU score is similar

Other then that you shouldn't get your hopes up for a night and day difference across the board.

Itll be just as fast, more open on windows.

But just getting a quad core up and going on your system would be good.

You will still have your e8400 processor to plug back in if you want to.

And trust me.

few years time, that quad core will become faster than that e8400 for sure. Because designers are going to be quad threading and triple threading stuff pretty quick.

It will happen, its pretty obvious. So. Id say buy the q9450, test it out, and if your not liking it to the best in your games, you probably will, then just keep it, and put the e8400 in..

Then next year when most games on your mind start screaming for more cores, youll be like,

HOLY SHIT i still have a quad core for it, plug it in, have fun.

I Would use the Quad to if using multiple cards, because the video cards are ganna need the power for them to calculate and pump FPS out, because we dont want a bottle neck do we :)

EDIT******

SCREW THE Q9650, that is A BULLSHIT MOVE.

Q9650 cost 300 dollars= more of that then i7's.= fail.

Q9550 Cost down toward 200-169.99 at micro center, they OVERCLOCK LIKE BEAST, and actually they overclock better then q9650's now.

Because the stepping revision of them in E0 make them godly like at hitting 540-550fsb and slamming on big ass 4.5+Ghz clocks on shitty low voltage.

I mean, 80% of the q9650's i see today get out performed and clocked by the q9550 I got for 169.99 at microcenter pickup. And there was a big burst of HWbot submissions because it turns out, the new revision of the q9550's were hitting the same speeds of 4.6-4.5Ghz on crappy low voltage, Just amazing.

i don't have the money for a brand new and if i bought brand new i wouldn't buy a Q9650 or something, than i rather buy a AMD Phenom II X6 setup instead but don't have that kind of money so i will get this Q9450 used, and again i think the 12mb cache will come in hand when i do some conversions.

and i haven't had a job for over 5years now, because i can't handle a fulltime job mentally and the danish system is to fucked to see that, so i just end up in their endless projects or i go home for a few months and back in their endless projects again, and with only about 800USD a month it's not like i can afford new hardware and anything i need to buy used everytime :(

and yes if i don't get the other 22inch back i will buy another 1080p LED monitor for my pc for that money so no worry another screen is on the way but with only about 800bucks a mouth it's not easy...

You know what STOP telling people they will not see any increase in performance over the dual core CPU ! GOOD GOD what the hell !
If this was the case why the hell do they make the damn things ? GOD some times you people talk right out of your !! I sure seen a HUGE Jump in performance and a HUGE jump in the way things EVEN FEEL going from a E8200 to the Q6600 and from that one to the Q9650 IS LIKE GOING FROM NIGHT TO DAY !
You WILL see better load times , faster DVD ripping , CD ripping , games , and EVERY THING ELS YOU DO WILL BE faster than any dual core going to a QUAD core .
