Upgrade GPU or monitor ? RTX 4070 TI SUPER or OLED/IPS.

Hi All ,

Currently I own a rtx 4070 with a Msi Optix magcqr 32 1440p 144hz monitor, is a VA panel without any of the newest features like HDR,etc (https://www.msi.com/Monitor/Optix-MAG321CQR/Specification). I was looking to upgrade my GPU because i had a very nice offer to update it to a 4070 ti super , unfortunately that offer expired and no longer have the chance to take that offer.

Now, I'm debating whether to spend on upgrading the GPU or the monitor thinking long term, and also because I think updating my monitor will do a lot more to the image quality overall than a new GPU. I usually play single player game like The Witcher 3 , god of war , re4 , etc but the game that Im looking forward to play the most is Stalker 2.

My option for a GPU replacement is only one at the moment : Gigabyte super eagle rtx 4070 ti super ICE

And for the monitor I was looking to get an OLED or QD-Oled since I hear and read is a game changer, the options that I have seen in stock considering that I want to stay at 32'' are:

Honestly Im not sure what is my best bet here , from what I read OLED monitor are a big jump in quality from any monitor but for example the monitors that I have available are no G-SYNC compatible and also there is that burn-in thing for OLED's. Then the IPS Im not sure if thats is a big upgrade to do from my actual VA monitor.

The other option is to stay with my actual monitor and upgrade the GPU to ensure that Im good for the long run at 2k.

Upgrading to 4k isn't an option , I don't want to upgrade my GPU often.

My Pc specs :

Cpu: Ryzen 7 7800x3d

Mobo: Asus rog b650e-f

Ram: Kingston beast 6000mhz cl36 32gb

Gpu: Gigabyte eagle 4070

Well, the GPU upgrade so late in the generation and to a card that is, what, 30% faster, is a bit of a questionable decision. I wouldn’t, but that depends on the price. I wouldn’t go for it unless there is a good discount and you can sell the previous card

Monitor-wise, unless you are ready to pay outta pocket for the new 4K OLED models I see no reason to go for an… it won’t be an upgrade, really, a side-grade at best. But, I see that:

Upgrading to 4k isn't an option , I don't want to upgrade my GPU often.

In this case - just maybe wait till 1440p OLEDs come down in price. The current market is, IMO, overcharged. Paying 800-1000 for what is, for all intents and purposes, a 1440p high refresh screen now, in the second half of 2024, seems like a poor idea.

Wouldn’t worry too much about G-Sync Compatible, by the way. Essentially, nowadays all monitors have VRR working on any card. It’s all converged into one way of doing things.

Since you already own a standard RTX 4070 - buy an OLED. Specifically, the 48 inch (or 42) version of the LG C4 TV. You won't regret it. Run the games you can at 4K, and the ones you can't, 1080p looks great on those too. OLED is just on a level all its own. It's what I do with a 55-in G3, best money I ever spent on my rig.

Monitor could last you multiple generations even longer especially if its a really good one

A 4070ti not so much.


I've said this before but I'd rather have a 4070 and an Oled display vs owning an average ips/va and a 4090.

I have all 3 and have gamed quite a bit on a 4070 so I'm not just saying that.

I'd look at the 32 inch 4k variants they are the only options that use 3rd generation panels and just use DLSS perfomance which looks and performs similar to DLSS quality at 1440p somtimes it looks slightly better but very game dependent.

My guess is on a 32 inch panel 4k DLSS performance will look better than 1440p DLSS quality using the DLSS 3.7 varient or newer.

Otherwise just extensively read reviews from Rting, TFT, monitors unboxed.

this. the performance hit will be higher since it's 1080p vs 960p internally, but 4K OLED will look incredible.
4K dlssp is probably the best quality to performance ratio atm as far as choosing the resolution you're playing at.

Won't say for my rig, but my LG 48C1 OLED is the best piece of tech I ever bought, pronto. It makes Nintendo Switch games look way better like they're being produced by something that actually has the graphical grunt.

I have one as well would whole heartedly recommend the 42 inch C4 if that's a possibility for the op.

I'm using primarily a G8 Oled now but I prefer some games on the C1 and vice versa.

Unfortunately I don't have the space to go for a bigger screen and I usually play at a desk which is 60-80 cm from my face , I don't think going for a bigger screen will do any good and also isn't available at reasonable price that monitor at my country (Uruguay).

Unfortunately my options where I live (Uruguay) come down to a few and also there isnt available at the moment any 32'' 4k OLED panel, the other option that I have on 4k which suits my needs is this one : https://www.samsung.com/us/computin...z-curved-smart-gaming-monitor-ls34bg850snxza/ , because I also have available a g9 Odyssey but thats is a 49'' monitor , and I plat on a desk 60-80 cm away from my face.

Push comes to shove, you can always first resort on using upscaling (mainly DLSS), and second on reducing the resolution. Not ideal, but 1440p on OLED is already amazing even if the screen itself is 4K.

The only reason I don't recomend the G8 is the poor warranty I'd stick with the models with 3 years that include burn in like the Dell and MSI varients.

Not much, no. 1440p on a 4K screen will be basically just as sharp as 1440p on a 1440p screen at the same size. If you do drive 4K at this same size, though, it'll obviously be sharper. If anything, 4K screens may have some processing on their own (mostly televisions do it) when the input signal is of a lower resolution than their native.

I always count on that because I know prices here are way to expensive but it is what it is , an lg c4 or similar cost around 3000 usd , other option for around 950 USD is this CORSAIR XENEON 32QHD240 https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/mon...40-gaming-monitor-cm-9020002-na#tab-techspecs , from what i read and see is pretty good monitor but makes me wonder if I will notice any quality jump from my actual VA

That's an IPS with fake HDR so no it's not a big enough upgrade over what you have.

Fake maybe harsh... Simulated is probably the better term.

The other option is the same corsair but the 4k version but that one is only 150 usd cheaper than the gigabyte oled 1440 version , from what I see the gigabyte oled 1440p is my best bet here , I asked to many local stores and there is not any news or rumors about new oled or 4k monitors arriving.

And I guess despite the price fact I will se a nice upgrade on image quality if I go to the oled

I always recommend buying from a store with a good return policy even if it's slightly more expensive.

That's a traditional IPS, it's not a significant upgrade from your current setup. OLED is a game changer... I know it's expensive and it hurts the wallet just thinking of it, but if you can make one fit the budget... your eyes will love you for it. It's the single biggest upgrade you can do to your gaming setup, really. I'm not sure how's the market compared to Brazil, but I just looked at the Uruguayan version of Mercado Libre, looks like some listings are in pesos, some are in USD - the official LG store at ML UY is charging $1999 for the 48 C3, seems rather expensive, that's more than what I paid on my 55 G3 directly from LG Brazil last year.

I don't recommend buying the 48 A2 (that's available for 1500 USD there) because it's only 60 Hz... but there is a listing for the 55 B3 for 1700 or so, and that one is 120 Hz compatible. Shame it is too big for your setup. It's just not as bright as the C-series model and its smart functionality is a little slower, but for a gaming setup, it's swell. I'm biased though, I got used to the big screen and can't let it go, I sit close to mine too

B and C-series are fine, best sellers... the G-series are luxury models meant for HDR enthusiasts, MLA and all

Only seen this part now, and I'll say with first-hand experience (check my specs): the Odyssey G8 OLED is great and 1440p ultrawide is an amazing experience on its own. Ultrawide gaming has its quirks, though: not every game is optimized to use the extra lateral screen state. Letterboxing in such cases almost makes it a non-issue - OLED will just turn them pixels off completely - but it becomes basically a 27" screen.
