Hello all! I build a new pc end of last year and i'm looking to upgrade my 3090 to a 4090. I was in talks with my dealer and he told me I needed a new PSU for the 4090 as it isn't compatible due the card needing other cables. As far as i know you can just plug a 4090 into any premium PSU if you use the correct adapter. I have a feeling they are trying to sell me a new PSU for nothing.

My specs:

I9 - 12900K

Seasonic Prime PX-1000 80plus platinum

H150I Elite LCD

Veng pro 3600 34GB DDR4 RAM

Windows 11 Home 64bit

3090 gaming x trio

MSI MPG Z690 EDGE WIFI

case: TT view 71 TG RGB plus

What do you guys think? Do i really need a new PSU? The one i have is as good as new and was quite costly.
They recommended me the Asus ROG 1000P2 Gaming

Thank you for you time!
Kr,
Vincent

Hello!
Thank you for your reply!
I'm not really looking for a new PSU. I'm just wondering if my existing PSU is compatible with a RTX 4090. As far as i know it's possible with an adapter. I've read most 4090's ship with this adapter.
Kr,

Using an adapter is fine.

I gave the PSU calculator link so you can check for yourself if the PSU is good enough for your hardware and a 4090.

It's not really about the PSU, it's about the cable; if the PSU has the new 12-pin type there do not have to be any adapters used and there are therefore no chances of connections overheating.
It of course is also good that the PSU uses the LLC resonant design, so it can quickly react to the changing graphics card loads.

You got seasonic PSU. You can easily get their cable:
Starting on October 12, 2022, our complimentary cable offer will be valid for customers who purchased a PRIME 1300, PRIME 1000 or FOCUS 1000 W power supply and a newest, high-power VGA card within the past 12 months. Proofs of both purchases are required to apply for the free 12VHPWR cable. The quantity of free cable sets is limited, and this offer is valid only as long as our supplies last.

Contact Seasonic support and ask them if it's compatible with your PSU:

If they're out of "complimentary" cables then they'll point you to retailer.

Quick google:

I ordered my 12-pin modular cable from Seasonic's EU partner:
And can only recommend them, they shipped the cable to me within 24-hours (it was ordered day before Christmas!) and UPS shipping was included in the €19.99 price.

Seasonic just told me this:

Dear Vincent,

Thank you for contacting Seasonic.

As long as you have enough PCIe cables to power the NVIDIA adapter provided with the RTX 4090 (basically 1 PCIe cable per PCIe connector available on the adapter), it should not be a problem to use your PSU with this card.

Any other question, please let us know.
Thank you.

I'm actually amazed by how quick they replied.
Anyway seems i'm' good! Thank you everyone!

As far as I understand this cable is even included with the purchase of my PSU.

Check it:

If you have it included then you're set and don't have to use the octopus connectors that ship with some cards.

Seems i'm good!
Also if you buy a 4090 the well known brands include this cable. So I should be good anyhow. I'm quite sure now my dealer just tried to scam me out on a new PSU lol

If you are going to OC both the CPU and the GPU, your PSU will probably be at it's limits.

Well if you've got $1900 to spend on a GPU you're lucky he didn't offer you a boat to buy.

Lol yeah i went way overboard with my purchase of that pc last year. Prices were highly inflated. I bought my RTX 3090 for over 3100 euros. The total pc was 6000 euros. They are selling a 4090 suprim right now for 2500 euros. Still with the amount of money i already spend there i was hoping they would be fair to me.

If you are going to OC both the CPU and the GPU, your PSU will probably be at it's limits.
I will not. I'm not into the OC business. So i'm guessing 1000 will be good.

This is what comes with the Suprim:

Finished look will look will be worse than this (this the 2 way splitter that came with 3080 Ti):

So if you want a cleaner look go with Seasonic cable

So now my dealer told me my PSU is compatible but they recommend another PSU: ASUS ROG THOR 1000P2 GAMING, 1000 Watt as a PSU with a 16 pin connector is more efficient and less taxing for your PSU. Is that right?
technically yes bearing in mind they have you down as a guy who wants the best with unlimited pockets..

Is that really much difference? What would you suggest? I find it kinda crazy to buy another expensive PSU just for some more efficiency, no?

You should really consider switching stores.

What country are you located in?

You have 80 Plus Platinum rated PSU, that guy is just trying to push a €340 PSU on to you to boost his KPI for the month. That PSU is also 80 Plus Platinum, it has the same connections as your PSU:
1666180497275.png

So no native 12+4 PCI-E only 2 8-pin cables terminating as 12VHPWR on GPU end.

Cable that comes with 4090 Suprim will be perfectly fine for your PSU - it's made per Nvidia spec for Nvidia, which then delivered its to board partners. It's only a matter of visual/aesthetic - if you want a cleaner look contact Seasonic and get yourself a €20 12VHPWR cable for your PSU - you will not need to ugly splitter, not buy a €340 PSU which basically achieves the same thing because it's already bundled with one.

They are selling a 4090 suprim right now for 2500 euros.
€2330 at LDLC:

Not to mention that LDLC also carries 4090 FE, which costs €1950.

Save yourself some money next time and sign up to Stock Drops with alerts for EU:

You'll get notifications next time LDLC has cards in stock:
