The US Air Force has broken the world speed record for a vehicle travelling by magnetic levitation.

The 846th Test Squadron smashed the record twice - first hitting 513mph before reaching 633mph just days later.

The system used superconductor magnets to lift the 2,000 pound sled before rockets powered it down the track.

Floating down a 2,100-foot track, the sled accelerated 928 feet every second.

Green flame? What compound it uses as fuel. Or the gif plays some tricks with colors.

Experts said of the more than three miles the sled traveled during the test, 11,000 feet were through a 184-inch in diameter helium tube. Helium decreases air friction and simulates upper atmospheric flight conditions.

Capt. Steve Georgian, 846th TS acquisitions management chief, described the sled hitting the helium as "like a jet hitting its afterburners."

Thirteen rocket motors propelled the sled during the test, including two stages of single Super Roadrunner motors designed specifically for this mission. Each stage is attached to its own part of the sled, Georgian said.

Sorry, but idiots... helium deposits aren't that large actually... yes it is mostly held in US... but still it makes this experiment rather pointless and expensive... FTW US TAX payers!!

The helium simulates flight conditions in the upper atmosphere......that is the point, these things arent for fun.

Then it doesn't need to be so big to simulate something... This looks more like an epeen extension and AIR Force show off... just for the record.

Usaf will have to check in with you before testing next time, for any pointers or advice theyre rocket scientists might have missed.:laugh:

I can just imagine those old nasa launches, when theyre counting down from 10....and they are checking off theyre checklist as they do then they get to like 5, "checking with ferrum master" to make sure the numbers jive

WASTE of taxpayer money. I wouldn't say anything if this would be done by a private company - Elon or Bezos... but the Air Force? They have a s*tload of problems with the aging fleet and yet they manage to spill money in to this? Utter RUBBISH, get yourself into this century, it ain't the cold war anymore.

"The Maglev system gives us the ability to test systems without much vibration. If you have sensitive components that are a part of a weapon system and you want to test them in a realistic environment, a system like this allows us to do that. We measure those vibration environments at various speeds to understand what the system is really capable of as we continue to go faster and faster.”

Are you daydreaming? And you can leave Russians aside this time, another topic. We have russian people here too btw.

Well, I reckon you didn't get the point. It is all about the reason and money. I still don't see this, especially with such a topic name, as an achievement in science. An expensive shaker by US Air Force? I would understand it is done by Northop Grumman, Raytheon, Boeng etc. Their A-10's bleed and soon the solders won't have any reasonable measure for air support. They goof around with some speed records as the topic says, and that's a epeen in my books.

as was my point that you as an EU citizen have no say in how the Americans spend/waste their money

I am not Dreaming ... You Brought the Cold war up ! not I

Military Research leads the way for Civilian Applications If it was not for Air Force and Nasa Research ( Funded By THE AMERICAN TAX PAYER )civilian company's like Northop Grumman, Raytheon, Boeng etc would not be in a position to advance their projects

Enough of your whining please i have no frustration for you to understand

As a member of NATO Latvia benefits from US research even if it fails in its financial commitments.

The following are the most important scientific projects supported by the Latvian MoD
: • Development of radiation protector (protective ointment) (2007);
• Impact of the NAF Air Force radar electromagnetic field on human health (2007); • Portable video and audio surveillance system (2007);
• Operational oceanography model system for waters under Latvian jurisdiction (2007);
• Usage of micro organisms in the degradation of explosive substances (2006);
• Antiseptic wound dressing, its research and justification for production technology (2005);
• Establishing the shooting simulator for the training purposes of NAF soldiers (2005).

The following are the most important ongoing projects:
• Adjusting the SAIKU-8 shooting simulator for tactical simulations (2008);
• Development of a CG-84 and AT-4 grenade launcher tactical field simulator prototype (2008); • Assessment of soldiers’ health and mental condition after international peace-keeping missions (2008);
• Modelling of Riga Bay ground sediment dynamics for mine hunting support (2008);
• Automated robotic platform model software design (2008);
• Programmable broadband radio stations in tactical networks (2008);
• Stipulation of the exit point of the national altitude (2008-2009);
• Minesweeper simulation software development for IMANTA (ALKMAAR) class ships (2009).

Both of you are silly... It doesn't have a slightest connection for my origin country... and leave it alone, I can and will have my objective opinion despite some calls it a whine. By the charts alone we see the large spending, obviously we see why. My points still stay strong.

These are your original points
1. Idiotic
2. Pointless
3 Expensive

Do you not agree with research and pushing the boundaries?
