WD Launches 1TB My Book Storage System

Western Digital announced today that its newest My Book storage system which provides users a safe place to secure up to one terabyte (1 TB) of digital content. The device can be set by users to work in RAID 1 setting for mirroring, or RAID 0 for accelerated reading and recording times. My Book Pro Edition II is designed for small-office environments where large amounts of content are managed, such as groups of creative professionals, as well as consumers who have highly valuable libraries of music, photos and video. In addition to capacities as large as 1 TB and two RAID options, the new system features advanced backup software, unique My Book features that simplify operation and three interfaces: FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0. WD's My Book Pro Edition II is available now through retail stores and online retailers at an estimated price of $549.

Where's the TCP/IP connection? Where's the media server? Most people have a router at home and would prefer such a backup sytem to be networked with the content available to ALL PCs/PDA's/Laptops/MediaCentres, etc.

This is a BIG mistake/ommission by WD to not include an ethernet port connection.

Buffalo Linkstation still wins hands-down.

This is aimed at normal people... that barely know how to use a router.. letalone a NAS.

i spose we would have to define "normal".. but once u have it u aint got to worry about storage space.. i tend to use usb drives instead of dvd burning.. i have three of em so far in my stack.. he he

probably too expensive for me thow.. tooo far above the sweet spot..

Its a shame this thing hasn't got ethernet. It would look good with my HP 9200c digital sender sitting on the bookshelf. No more need to keep any more books. Turn 'em all into PDF's automatically.

Well, power usage of a homemade NAS would be way higher.

Or does anyone know a good DIY NAS thingy with an Epia board or so?
