What games do you find work well with the track pad style of controller? Just curious. I also have a Steam Controller, its been in storage in a ziploc bag for years though. I might get it out and give it a try if you can recommend me some games
It's less a question of what works well on the Steam Controller than what
doesn't on a "traditional" controller. Older games without Xinput support are common applications. Currently, I'm only using the SC with Last Epoch and FFXIV. I'd stop short of saying it works
well on either, though. LE's UI is designed with controller in mind, but it's still much easier to navigate menus with M/KB. As I mostly play at my desk, I end up using both. Dusted off the SC because mouse move was wreaking havoc on my wrist. Only use the SC in FFXIV when I'm doing a lot of running around in the overworld for the same reason. Millions of people play on console, though, so it must be doable. I've just not bothered to figure it out.
To be a little kinder to the SC, it's like so many alternative input methods: you need to adapt. I found it works pretty well (but not as well as M/KB, unsurprisingly) for controller-friendly FPSs with some settings tweaking. Gyro control was the key for me. I set up the trackpad as trackball style, and for gyro to disable with trackpad input. That allowed for coarse aim with the trackpad, and fine aim with gyro. Since the SC is customizable to a nearly absurd degree, getting a decent balance there was a mere matter of experimentation.
I'll reiterate: Settings are paramount.
Nothing is designed with the SC in mind; rather the SC was designed to work with everything. Some games have excellent developer- or community-contributed layouts. I've used several, though usually still end up making tweaks. PM me if you'd like to discuss further.
