I have no idea why I ended up connecting the fan to the power supply as well as the motherboard. Brain dead I guess. Anyway, how bad did I mess up my system? It doesn't boot but the fans and lights are on and the optical drive will open.

It's a fresh build. It's a bit complicated but I'll do my best to include the details. My son built it and all seemed to go well until loading the OS, then it kept saying there was a file missing. I finally got it loaded but when he connected to the internet and updated drivers it crashed again. He took it all apart again thinking he was going to sell the components. I decided to rebuild and take it to a local guy to do the software install and he saw the double connection on the fans. Thanks for your thoughts.

What PSU?

If you fried anything, it'll be the mobo I would suspect. A good PSU should've shut off before damage was done though. So let's start by asking the brand and model of the PSU.

It's a CoolMax 500W 80+. AMD FX-4300 3.8 GHz quad-core processor. MOBO is MSI 970 gaming ATX AM3+.

What board? Which lights are on? Any boot/post fail LED's?

I put more info in R-T-B's reply. I'm not sure where to look for the lights you mention. I just know the MSI logo was lit on the board and the lights on the fans were on. It's with the guy trying to troubleshoot it right now so I can't look.

One other thought...could he have bent pins when reinstalling the cpu?

A couple of things.

Since you cannot see the LEDs I wont go there.
As to bending pins, anything is possible!

Hmm... Well based on what your saying here is my thoughts:

1: I do not think the CPU pins are bent mostly because the symptoms just to me don't match

2: hooking the fan up twice is more likely to blow the fan but the voltage delivered should not have blow the board. Easy way to check is just to look at the board for damage (least to start.

As for a solution, here is my thought:

1: take the bios battery out then test it so it's set to full factory defaults.

2: test another video card if you can

3: try the ram in different slots(1stick at a time).

See if anything happens after that.

Just to be clear, you mean a fan with both 3-pin and molex connectors like this?
Stole this pic from ebay don't judge me :p said:

That'd push 12v down to the board which should also be 12v. Worse case scenario, I'd imagine it just fries the integrated fan controller and that port just doesn't work from now on. I'd suspect the issue is elsewhere.

I think that could be possible. A computer should POST with just a motherboard, CPU, and power. Do you have the PC speaker hooked up to the motherboard (or is there one integrated)?
If the internal speaker is hooked up and not beeping a code, something very important is likely hooked up improperly hooked up or damaged.

Thanks to everyone who replied and offered suggestions and comments. Turns out the CPU was bad and probably was when I got it. There were other issues right after the initial build but I didn't have parts to swap out. Anyway it's up and running fine now. xo
