What is a good real price for the RTX 5090?

So, one month has passed since the 5090's release.
I checked the available 5090s, and they cost between $4,000 and $5,000.
What is the actual price, and is it worth buying?
I know I'll never see the $2,000 MSRP, but when should I pull the trigger? At $3,000? $2,500?

This is a bizarre question to ask. We don’t and can’t know your financial situation. Maybe you are the “money no object” guy. Clearly not, though, if you have to ask. But, realistically, there isn’t really any objectively correct answer other than that the MSRP should actually be a thing that exists and not a Mickey Mouse suggestion never seen in reality. After that, it’s whatever you personally are capable and willing to pay. Hell, in MY opinion there IS no good price for the 5090 and even at MSRP it’s a complete meme as a gaming card and only makes sense as a work tool to make those money back. In which case the price doesn’t really matter too much.

tl:dr - There is no GOOD price for an inherently overpriced product in a fucked up market. It’s like asking which tropical illness is a good one.

I need it because I have 4k160hz monitor. It's the only card powerful enough.

What, so for playing vidya? Then you don’t need it. It’s a want. You are buying a toy. As such, the good price is whatever you feel comfortable spending, if you really must. I am not your accountant, I can’t advise you in such a way as to provide any relatively definitive answer.

I'd have to agree with the sentiment that even at MSRP, the pricing of the 5090 is not good. As a 4090 owner I would never have spent $1,600 on this card if it wasn't for AI, let alone $2,000 on a card that has an utter lack of architectural improvements and is simply faster by being bigger. Not withstanding the plethora of issues, IMO the 5090 is an inferior product to the 4090 until Nvidia gets those sorted out (and I doubt they are given some of them like the lack of current balancing and running against the connectors wattage limit require a recall of the cards). It's defective out of the box.

At the end of the day you seem to be asking us how much you are willing to pay and there's no way we could know but at the very least you seem to have answered your own question, $2,500 - $3,000 seems to be your range. If you decide to get a 5090, and I absolutely don't recommend it given Nvidia has seemingly chosen to ignore connector issues that are now severe, you must power limit the GPU significantly. Around 350w seems to be pretty good. You'll probably get around 4090 stock performance but at a lower wattage. People should be power limiting their 4090s as well.

Just remember in a year the 6000 series will drop. Same price or cheaper and 1.5x perf.

isn't it in 2027?
Also after 5000 dropped, 4000 series disappeared and hiked prices, so you can' tbuy either 5000 nor 4000. It's sad.
What if 6080 will cost 2000$ and 6090 3000$ MSRP?

“Hey guys, sure Ampere was scalped due to CoViD, but Lovelace is coming out, surely it will be well priced!”

“Okay boys and girls, that was rough, but Blackwell is going to be nice, it’s even late in consumer space. Surely NV is cooking up some great gains for us and maybe some better pricing”

“J-just remember, you can wait for RTX 6000. Gonna be a perf per dollar W this time. It must be. No cope here, no-no.”

I said it a billion times but won't hurt to do it once again: BUY NOTHING. Not 5090, not 9070 XT, not 7900 XTX, not nothing. This market needs a proper "fuck you" from the customers. Prices are way too obscene and people buying cards despite not actually depending on calculating power to live are enabling even worse states of affair.

If your current GPU is at least half decent (i.e. RX 6800 / RTX 3070 or better) you're still good to play at lower resolutions (either plain 1080p/1440p or aggressive upscaling) with lowered settings. You won't crumble under the pressure of playing at non-maximum settings. If 5090 wasn't a foul design I'd borderline agree with $2K but at this level, it only deserves utter demise.

I agree with you on the theory of it but TechPowerup forum readers are not even a drop in the bucket of the market out there. Commercial buyers dominate here, we gamers just get the leftover dregs.

What needs to happen is that we need a credible third player, Intel or ARM or anyone else. I don't see that happening for another decade at least, Intel is stumbling right out of the starting block and may not even be the Intel we know before the end of this decade.

I not only dwell on TPU, I share my concern everywhere I step (unless it's not really appropriate, e.g. funerals) so I virtually reached out to millions of people. Whether did they listen to me or not, that's a different matter...

i don't see any reason in the universe to give NVidia more than 1000€ for a 5090. Just because they create a fake shortage because they take their very limited TSMC Wafer allocation for stupidly expensive AI crap accelerators does not mean that a 5070 is really more worth than 300€, a 5080 more than 600 or a 5090 more than a thousand... especially considering the full stagnation in performance over almost three years.

It’s an odd question, considering that the MSRP is already a price that 99% of people would find unreasonable for a gaming toy used occasionally.

Logically speaking, at an MSRP of $1,999, you’re paying twice the price of the 5080 for a 52% performance increase or around 42% if you factor in a well-overclocked 5080. But if you insist that money and logic don’t have to go hand in hand, then it ultimately comes down to a personal decision: how much are you comfortable spending?
The entire Blackwell lineup is being scalped rn... I’d be perfectly fine waiting for the market to stabilize.

3090 Ti was late, mistimed, and mispriced. Same won't occur here.
