I came across this GTX 280, with close to no markings on the chip itself, and a square instead of a dot. What could this card be? Some sort of engeenering sample?

Looks like nvidia made it or maybe an OEM? Got a shot of the cooler?

One clue is the BIOS version and, according to TPU's VGA BIOS collection, BIOS version 62.00.1C.00.01 is only listed for one card:
LeadTek GTX 280 1024 MB

Now, to be fair, I have never even heard of LeadTek before today. Of course, that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist because there are a lot of obscure video card AIB names that people haven't heard of. Names like Sparkle, VisionTek, BFG, HIS, Albatron, Club3D and Diamond come to mind.

I did a quick search for "LeadTek GTX 280" and found a real blast from the past for me. There's a review site that I hadn't visited in so long that I forgot that it existed (and I'm shocked that it still does) called Bjorn3D.com. They did a review of this card about 15 years ago in July of 2008:

LeadTek WinFast GTX 280

Despite the "3D" in their name, they haven't reviewed a single video card since their review of the Gigabyte RTX 3090 Eagle OC 24GB from October 18, 2020. Being the curious kind of guy that I am, I did a bit of research into LeadTek, thinking that they were probably a long-dead GeForce AIB partner like BFG. I was astonished to discover that LeadTek still exists and is still making GeForce cards. Not only that, but their cards are real beauties!

Here's a picture of the LeadTek GeForce RTX 4090 Hurricane 24G:

That is such a pretty card! It must be said however that the name of the company is quite unfortunate because the name "LeadTek" doesn't exactly make me think of "fast" although I don't know if it's pronounced "Leed-Tek" (sounds more like Lee-Tech) or "Ledd-Tek" but "Ledd-Tek" is what immediately went through my mind because, even though it's weird, it just slips off the tongue better. Kind of like how "Three-Hundred Zed-Ex" and "Zed Twenty-Eight" (300ZX & Z28) slip off the tongue much less awkwardly than "Three-Hundred Zee-Ex" and "Zee Twenty-Eight". Looking on their site, they only seem to sell in China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.

I'm glad that you posted this question because I have learnt something new today, an AIB brand that I had never heard of before that has some stunning cooler designs!

Thanks for that! :D

They are ancient, and were a top player before. I haven't owned one, but I know of more than a few that did. From what I remember they have/had a good rep.

Yeah, I see that. The GTX 2xx / HD 4xxx era is when I worked at Tiger Direct. I remember lots of AIB names that no longer exist (VisionTek, BFG and Diamond), have become obscure because they still exist but aren't making cards gaming video cards anymore (HIS) or were resurrected from obscurity (Sparkle and Matrox). The WinFast name sounds familiar and I'm sure that I've seen that before somewhere but I have absolutely no recollection of the name LeadTek. I'm sure that I would've remembered it because it makes me think of tech made of lead (which is funny as hell to me).

That hurricane card is just gorgeous though. I can't stop staring at its soft, organic lines (kinda like Yeston's lines) and that wicked contrast between the frame's cobalt-bronze colour and the fans' cobalt-blue colour. Whoever designed this is a real artist.

I have a leadtek Geforce 4 Ti 4400, so they've been around at least that long. My RTX A2000 also identifies as a leadtek iirc, but finding cards between those two age wise hasn't been easy.

It's strange perhaps, but one of the things I liked about the Ti 4400 is that it has its own post screen for the video card.

Leadtek is nowadays APAC region equivalent for PNY in Americas. Nvidia's main partners for professional cards.

Anything odd with that gigabyte card? Looks like normal reference gtx 280 to me:
