Got an Asus B660i strix motherboard. Both NVME slots are used, a 500gb nvme and a 2tb nvme. The 2tb being a XPG model used for PS5s so its rated at 7000mb/s.

Anyway, one day it just vanished in Windows. Wont show up. Bios didn't read it.

Take it out, replaced with a 1tb NVME WD Blue I had sitting aside. This is daughters PC and she doesn't play that much for games.

Anyway, I purchased one of those NVME to USB adapters and then connected it on my PC, and it sees it. I formatted it of course. The WD Blue is seen no problem in her machine as well.

So what would have prompted it to just no longer be seen in the machine yet it still works?

Careful with that assumption. What does the smart data say?

hmmmm that looks fine, if thats the case the only times I have seen issues were

- Slot issue
- Temperature issue
- Controller failure

If I beat the snot out of my MP400 without a cooler it throttles bad, but will eventually drop out of the system if I keep going.

It may have been indeed the cooler now I think of it. The way it was set up it would be not getting much for air.

If it was slot issue though, the other NVME wouldn't work. Same with controller.

So only thing I can think of is the temp.

Same with controller.

I mean the controller on the SSD.

At Gen4 though I am willing to bet it was getting spicy. In my case it was transferring my steam library from a backup. Lots of small files; I was beating the shit out of it.

What happens if you put it back in again or try it in a different machine. I wonder the potential a reseat fixing it.

Haven't tried. I'm not taking apart that machine anytime soon because the way the case is, I need to remove pretty much everything to get to the m.2 port.

On my other rig, there is only 1 working m.2 port now.

Yeah.

Not over tightening are you ?, like with my ASUS 670e i was able to do just that as clever ASUS put a piece of firm foam like material to push against the NVME drive and it stopped my Sebrant Rocket drive from working if i was not careful. It was basically bending the drive ^^.

Did you go to computer management to make sure there's a letter applied to it? Thats happened to me before, several times actually. Just need to go storage>disk management and see if your drive is there. If it is, right click on 'change drive letter' and I'm sure you can figure it out from there.

If not.... clean the connectors with alcohol? That helped me fix a p5 plus the other day that for some reason only wanted to run in two lanes.

I've had to pull power to a rig to get my old Toshiba Gen3 256GB NVME to start getting recognized again, this was in the B450 ITX that Im using as a streamer/broadcaster secondary build. These things can get fickle. I bet if OP tries the drive in the original config it will get detected again.
