I have an am2/am2+ motherboard and am getting a am3 processor.

So should i use the bios update from the board manufacturer(xfx)'s site or the latest nvidia driver? or should i be fine and it run out of the box?

Thanks.

board in system specs.

Always use the motherboard manufaturer, unless someone has a modded bios driver, then use at your own risk. As for motherboard drivers the ones on the motherboard should work just most people like to have updated drivers so if it has realtek lan go to realtek.com, ati/nvidia video go to nvidia.com/ati.com, nvidia chipset nvidia.com.

you need to check the cpu compatability list for your board - it will tell you what bios version is required IF it is compatible.

However, sometimes a cpu won't be listed but will in fact work with the mobo - like 940's and Asus M3A mobo's. In that case, you could post here with your specs and someone might be able to tell you.

note - didn't check to see if you already had your specs listed.

You can't use AM3 chips on AM2+ boards.

Unless by AM3 you mean the Phenom II X4 that are AM2+ compatible like the 940. If you get something like a 945, you need an AM3 board.

No you don't, AM3 CPU's are backwards compatably with am2+ boards.....

I think your confused with not being able to run am2+/am2 CPU's on AM3 boards.

Please stop spreading that crap dude. AM3 CPU's work 100% in AM2 boards.

As for the op, if your board has a bios adding support for any Phenom II CPU, then any Phenom II CPU will work.

But honestly, I can't find where to get the update on XFX's website. Open a support ticket with them and get it that way.

Yea after looking at their website I don't understand why anyone would buy an XFX board. They don't have any download links or bios updates..

Yeah same here, XFX better get its crap together or maybe they better stick to Graphics cards only
