I wonder if going 100% solid for the secondary capacitors will be an option in the future.
it would price out many PSU against the competition

Not to be a pain or in any way ungrateful, but I was hoping for something a bit more than
  • PURE POWER 11
  • TOUGHPOWER GX3 Gold 850W
  • FOCUS GX ATX 3.0
  • Be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 650W ATX3.0
Was hoping for the reason these might be a good choice.

Not following, the GX3 met your needs so it would be a good choice. Focus GX is a fine PSU but modular so you didn't like it

In the end I just got a secondhand EVGA 500W1, beefed up the bridge rectifier (by having two as there is a place on the board) and replaced some of the secondary capacitors with Japanese versions, but didn't go with solid state versions although they are not too expensive (about a $1 a piece).

Modular would have meant twice as many connectors and so a greater chance of failure.

Disclaimer: do not mess with power supplies as the main capacitors can carry a lethal charge even when the supply is not plugged in.

If you insist on a non modular then you will be buying a worse power supply. The best ATX power supplies are all modular. It is the way it is now.
Fair question, I assume there is a price premium for modular and I'd rather put the money elsewhere.

More points of failure?
In fact its the opposite because there is no market for high end but yet non modular power supplies in the enthusiast DIY ATX power supply market. The demand is so low, they aren't made. If they actually made them, they'd have to sell the non modular at a premium to overcome the cost of making fewer of them because fewer would sell.

I ended up with two $35 supplies modified to my likes (always nice to have a spare around).

Regardless, I remain grateful for the help and advice in this thread.

most case PSU bays cover up any additional cables anyway making modular moot for many builds but you can't sell most PSU lines other than the basic ones without the modular feature so the brands backed themselves into a corner with that feature

Very useful in figuring out a power supply.

Johnny Lucky PSU Lemon List
The lemons list is also useful.

This thread began with a secondhand CyberPowerPC I got recently that had a 600W Apevia Prestige supply and since I intend to use this as my main machine, and not just gaming, I wanted it to have a robust power supply.

He works for corsair and doesn't care.
The website was run by Taz, Jon had not been part of it for a long time. Most of the reviews were done by another person as well (OK wolf). It's not like there is a lot of money in running a PSU web site (or most tech sites) but there obviously is a lot of time needed and bills.

most of the reviews are done by websites no longer around or no longer do PSU reviews. Those sites that still do reviews have stated they don't want to risk their equipment on units they know will fail their tests.

Just for the record
PSU Tier List rev. 17.0g - Cultists Network

and there is my replacement supply
  • EVGA 500W1 (Tier F - replace immediately)
along with the supply it replaces
  • Apevia Prestige (Tier C - Low end)

Just to recap, my EVGA 500W1 does not have a heatsink on the bridge rectifier and so is only rated to 3A
EVGA 500W Review - Another One (PSU) Bites the Dust (youtube.com)
but there is room on the board for two bridge rectifiers and so I made this modification.

Disclaimer: do not mess with power supplies as the main capacitors can carry a lethal charge even when the supply is not plugged in.

I never liked that list, that said if someone asked my opinion about either of those PSU I would say avoid them. You don't need my opinion on them or anyone else, you already knew that and just wanted to open them up and play with them. ;)

Actually, once the EVGA 500W1 is modified with dual bridge rectifiers I intend to trust it with my main PC.

I seem to recall a picture of melted modular connectors, so I am reticent to take this route.
If we want to go there, I've seen far more nonmodular units as cinders than modular ones.

:( Come on, Shrek. This is getting to be a bit anal now. "Seem to recall"? "A" picture? :kookoo:

Like there has never ever been a hard-wired power supply that went up in smoke and fire?

A bit harsh, but I agree. I'm out too.

Finally got a picture of the dualie mod with both bridges in place; most of the benefit is probably from the overall improved thermal contact with the circuit board.

P.S.

Turns out one must be very careful when running diodes in parallel, as one can dominate the shared current.

Now I'm confused... it is well known that running diodes in parallel is not a good idea as one tends to dominate the shared current, and yet despite this a lot of power supplies seem to have dual bridge rectifiers.

This is the sort of thing that interests me when figuring out which supply is right for me.

Check out the FSP Twin pro series. Non-Modular cabling with swappable, redundant power modules up to 900w, and in regular ATX form factor. Pretty cool.....certainly appealed to my inner power supply nerd. Sorry for the huge picture, but it gives a good look at how the power units hook into the cage.

I ended up with two EVGA 500W supplies for about $30 each (after postage and modification).

Maybe I should just have stuck with the Apevia Prestige 600W that came with the computer, it was more efficient although the fan was noisier than the EVGA; but people here convinced me otherwise. Turns out the Apevia had no filtering on the input so was probably radiating a lot of radio interference.
