Thread topic should cover this 1st post for starters?

I plan on replacing my current Nvidia GPU with an AMD card I found in my stash. When looking up some related info, I figured out why it must have been sitting in my stash for so long. NOISE. I came across many articles related to that noisy fan on this particular model.

ATI Radeon HD4670
PN 288-DE101-440BD
1G DDR3 PCI-E HDMI/DVI/VGA
Release Date: Sep 10th, 2008

One of the posts I read described how the victim had solved his noise problem using Radeon Bios Editor..... which led me here. I D/L the RBE, and it seemed to run fine. (didn't play with it too much yet as I'm still going through the tutorial). Then I D/L the recommended GPU-Z v2.64.0 software, ran it, and it gave me instant BSOD. "Windows needs to shut down now... G'bye".

Anyway, the version history didn't seem to include which version was the last one to support my ancient OS.

Thanks for any advice,
Wolf

Latest should work on Windows XP. Looks like you found a bug.

If you have the time, go back like 10 releases each attempt to find out which version is the last that worked correctly, so maybe that helps narrow down the code change that causes this.

Hello Mr. W1zzard.....

Looks like the problem is likely at my end. Went back in increments to v.1.14.0. All BSOD shortly after opening banner...

"PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"
*** STOP: (0x00000000,0x8328000C,0x00000000,0x80508F6E,0x00000000)

Then D/L original version 0.0.7 (October 10th, 2007) and got exact same result.

I have every release of .NET Framework installed up to 4.0, plus at least one hotfix or update on them..... what to do next?

Graphics drivers are installed? Maybe check if there's a newer version or an older that works

Yes, last updated Nvidia driver from 2013 is installed.

"307.83-desktop-winxp-32bit-international-whql.exe"

Are you saying GPU-Z only works with supported display drivers, and if not found, crashes?

If that be the case, makes more sense for me to swap out the GPU's, and then try to run the GPU-Z on the ATI card and driver, since I don't want to edit the bios on the current one.

Bug check 0x50 can be caused by the installation of a faulty system service or faulty driver code. Antivirus software can also trigger this error, as can a corrupted NTFS volume.

It could also occur after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed hardware (usually related to defective RAM, be it main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM).

Latest release working perfectly here on regular 32-bit WinXP Home, fully updated until April 2019 :)

I thought you had a ATI 4670?
I have not yet swapped out the GPU's. I was simply downloading and testing the required software at this point to verify I don't see the common "Not a valid Win32 Application".

Recently, I disabled and/or set a few Services to Manual. Perhaps that has something to do with the problem. This is the first time I've encountered this. In fact, I don't remember the last time I've seen a BSOD.... maybe 20 years.

@Assimilator: Thanks for that Bug Check Report. I haven't done the time consuming memory check in quite a while. Memory check on boot always shows 8192Mb with no errors. BSOD suggested disabling "Bios Memory" caching and shadowing options, but I see nothing in my Bios settings related to these. On slow boot, splash screen says "L2 Cache Enabled: 2048M", and that's that.

So far, my troubleshooting attempts to run GPU-Z included;
(I don't have any anti-virus running)

Reset Services to their previous state.
Boot after loading "Failsafe Defaults" in Bios.
Boot Windows "Safe Mode w/ Networking"

In Safe Mode, GPU-Z did not crash. Instead I got a popup message box:
"Could not start driver. This service cannot be started in Safe Mode." (which service could that be?)

For kicks, I D/L and ran "ATIWinFlash.exe". It didn't crash either and simply reported "Cannot find discreet ATI Video Card."

Considering all of the above, I'm thinking this is not a memory issue so much as a software glitch with either Windows Services, or the current installed Nvidia display driver. I should probably stop playing with it until I've actually swapped the GPU's, and installed the ATI driver.

Thanks,
Wolf

@ImWolf Try version 0.7.4, it usually works for me when latest fails.
Although, last time I checked, it wasn't needed for 307.83 NV driver....

That version produced a different result. Instead of BSOD, the machine rebooted. Thanks anyway.

The main reason I'll be getting rid of the Nvidia GPU and the associated software/drivers is because the older Nvidia stuff does not play nice with Linux, and I'm tired of having to deal with it. Perhaps it just doesn't want to play nice with the GPU-Z software either.

Hopefully I'll find the time to swap out the cards soon and see if the ATI card cures this little snag.
