Will Radeon 9070 XT be enough for 3840x1600 resolution?

I am building a gaming rig because i decided its time to upgrade. Already planned 9800x3d and i have 38" ultra wide monitor with g-sync and freesync. Currently running RTX 3080 and using DLSS to keep up in games or lowering the details.

All this time i was watching benchmarks for 1440p UW gaming and saw 9070 XT was doing nice job, but just now i realized my resolution is different - it is 3840x1600. I think it falls between 4k and 1440p?

Now i am not sure if i should grab 9070 XT Red Devil which is around 950 euro in my country or wait a little and go for RTX 5080 which is 1450 euro. I was dead set on AMD because i saw the performance gains in 1440p are not worth the huge price difference, but now with my current resolution i am not sure anymore. To be honest spending SO MUCH on 5080 feels weird and i was hoping i can play comfortably with 9070 XT for 2-3 years and then change again. But not sure if my resolution is closer to 1440 or 4k and how much it will affect framerates.

I play all kinds of games from AA titles to multiplayer games if that matters.

Thanks for any help.

I'd still go with the 9070XT since it is much cheaper than a 5080. It will play nice on the resolution you want to use it with. Though, if you want to spend $500 more for the 5080 then go for it. It will be faster a bit but does it justify the price hike you will have to spend for it? That's for you to decide.

What games? What's your rest of system specs? What FPS requirement do you have? What settings? FSR? What operating system?

There's too many open questions. I'd recommend reading reviews and finding the answer for yourself.

My 9070 XT is running great, I love it, but my great might not be the same as your great.

I'd say two certain things, though:
1. The only things above the 9070 XT are the 5080 and 5090, both of which are horribly more expensive.
2. Nothing is really worth buying at current prices. Waiting might be beneficial.

3840x1600 is much much closer to 4k than it is to 1440p. It's 75% of the pixels of 4k and 66% higher than 1440p. Since fsr4 turned out decent I wouldnt sweat it, excluding the heaviest of rt games it will be perfectly fine. It would be akin to having a 5090 at a 4k display.

It's definitely not worth spending 500 extra for the 5080 unless you are really into PT games. If not, go for the 9070xt.

4080 and 4090 too are better. However your point stands, the prices are beyond nuts.

OP, 9070 XT would be a rushed and impulsive upgrade. It's just 50ish percent faster than what you have. 40 to 60 FPS that is. Noticeable? Yes. Wow? Absolutely not.

Wait till 5090 level becomes affordable. At some point, it will. But before then, at these prices, better enjoy older titles that run well than contribute to the global pricing clown fiesta.

Depends entirely on your gaming/games/preferences.

There is no specific card for a specific resolution. There are simply cards with X performance - simply get the fastest/best/most value option you can afford.

Question is how high should you set the bar these days, if you feel you need '4090 and up' performance for your gaming.

You really don't need that, after all. Its just a want on the far end of the price spectrum. And since gen to gen perf has stalled completely... people might need to adjust expectations. Big time.

People should stop impulsive purchases that enable this stagnation.

I think stagnation is enabled by people breaking over 1k on their GPUs despite the stagnation.
The market's telling Nvidia to keep making pricier cards, instead of us saying 'well F U this is my limit'.

That depends on what game do you want to play and whether you are willing to lower settings, but generally, yes, it's a great graphics card for use with 4K and near-4K resolutions. Not the highest performance card but also not the most expensive - and the experience will be great. If you're interested in it, it's a solid pick in my opinion

By affordable I mean whatever the OP can invest without going broke. Guess it's closer to ten hundred than it is to five.

So look at reviews for the 9070XT at 4k. Are the results to your liking? If so get the card, if not, wait and pay close to double for an Nvidia card.

We havent seen any breakthroughs in the development department majority of new games today look worse than triple A titles from 10 yrs ago and somehow manage to run 10 times worse. Save your money for now and wait for the next milestone.. just turn off ray tracing etc for the time being and wait til the next iteration of consoles to come out (which maybe soon) to up the standard in the graphics department.

They are both heavily overpriced so unless the 3080 is the main deterrent for you to enjoy pc gaming I'd wait it out near msrp both cards are OK if bit meh.

Personally I wouldn't spend near 1000 on a 4070ti super like gpu in 2025 or 1300+ on the mediocre 5080 both are not worth the current premium you face unless that is near MSRP for your country.

At the end of the day it's your money so only you can decide what each card is worth but imo it's a bad generation to need a new card at current pricing.

If either is enough is subjective it's very dependent on how you game i wouldn't like either for 1440p but others might think they are fantastic. Take the 4k numbers and add around 15-20% for each gpu more if you plan on using quality upscaling in the games you are most interested in. I don't like upscaling at 1440p but at 1600p it might be solid.

Now i am not sure if i should grab 9070 XT Red Devil which is around 950 euro in my country

*300 € overpriced. That is up to definition. You may get what i point out.

For the fake 4k Resolution (mathematically) you need a NVIDIA 4090 or 5090. And even that will struggle. I do not own that hardware - just saying.

When you want 4k you should pay for 5090.

1440p UW gaming

I think you mix something up. You talk about ultrawide.
you better always say the proper resolution

1440p = 2560x1440

2560x1440
there are monitor resolutions which are far wider but only with 1440 heigth.

This was also my motivation to only buy a 1440p monitor with 75 fps. I'm not talking about counterstrike 2 which can render 700 fps in that resolution. Most reasonable graphic cards struggle with 1440p.

What games? What's your rest of system specs? What FPS requirement do you have? What settings? FSR? What operating system?

There's too many open questions. I'd recommend reading reviews and finding the answer for yourself.

My 9070 XT is running great, I love it, but my great might not be the same as your great.

1. The only things above the 9070 XT are the 5080 and 5090, both of which are horribly more expensive.
2. Nothing is really worth buying at current prices. Waiting might be beneficial.

So my monitor is LG 38WN95C. Its 38" Ultrawide with this weird resolution. It's not that im lazy i already watched lots of benchmarks (especially for games that interest me) but beign this weird resolution i am not sure how should i approach that. Now i was told its closer to 4k than to 1440p and i should just check 4k benchmarks and add about 10-15% more fps to the result, that might be the way to go.

Im still building rest of my system but it will be something like this:

x870 MSI tomahawk
9800X3D CPU
2x 32gb CL30 6000 ram
LG 38WN95C monitor

Rest of specs does not matter i believe.

And wow i did not expect so many replies, so just to throw some more light onto the matter, i would like 120fps in older games, but newer 60-90 range would be enough. Im just scared that games like Silent Hill 2 or Alan Wake 2, or even Wukong won't even run at 60 fps without FSR4 or upscaling. I do not care about PT and if i do, that will be in future 2-3 years and i might change GPU then if market gets better.

I also would like to run Kingdom Come Delivarance in in about 90 fps and enjoy the game on ultra. I heard it will have FSR4 support so that might be worth something.

As for RTX 3080, im giving it to my kid, its already settled so i am left with NO GPU at the moment and need to buy something anyway.

I can also grab Steel Legend 9070 XT for about 800 euro but i just like how Red Devil looks. As for monitor it is Ultrawide LG 38WN95C. I dont know if calling it 1600p makes sense or if something like this exists officialy.

Im grateful for all the replies so far, thank You so much.

The problem is someone earlier mentioned that 3840x1600 is closer to 4k than to 1440p...thats why im confused now and not sure which benchmarks to look at.

Not every game scales the same but if you just take the 4k numbers and add 20% it should give you a ballpark of what to expect +/- 5%.

Yeah it's probably more similar to 1440p ultrawide than it is 4k I'd guess 15% more demanding depending on game. The 9070XT and 5080 both scale well with resolution which is impressive for the Radeon card not having a ton of bandwidth the new infinity cache must be doing some heavy lifting.

Sometimes, you need to use the Technology (Upscaling + Frame Generation) which is provided for 4K@240hz high refresh Gaminng :)

The numbers measured in "native" fps most of those "Testing Stations" privoding aren`t interesting anymore.

Going by the review I just posted (computerbase) the 9070xt is kinda depressing, 3% ahead of the 4070ti S at 1440p and 1% behind in RT. Progress in 2025, that's it I guess.
