XMG is introducing the XMG APEX 17 MAX, its first gaming laptop featuring AMD's high-end processors from the Dragon Range series. This classic 17.3-inch laptop combines a Ryzen 9 7945HX with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 or 4060, along with a 165 Hz WQHD display offering 100% DCI-P3 and sRGB color space coverage. The 'MAX' suffix has always signified maximum CPU performance in XMG's APEX series laptops. While the APEX 17 MAX (M24) no longer features a socketed processor like earlier models, it is powered by the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, the laptop version of the Zen 4 desktop CPU AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. Both are built on the same 'Raphael' processor die, manufactured in a 5 nm process, offering 16 fully-fledged cores and 32 threads. This powerhouse CPU is paired with either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 or 4060, both delivering up to 125 watts of graphics performance (115 W TGP plus 10 W Dynamic Boost).

The display lid of the 17.3-inch XMG APEX 17 MAX, measuring 402 x 265 x 28.6 mm and weighing 2.85 kg, is made of aluminium for enhanced stability. The IPS panel features a classic 16:9 format with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, covering 100% of both the DCI-P3 and sRGB color spaces. It has a 165 Hz refresh rate, 330 nits of brightness, and supports AMD FreeSync. The display also offers a power-saving 60 Hz mode, allowing for extended battery life from the 73 Wh battery, which is internally screw-fastened and therefore replaceable. Additionally, the iGPU-only mode, selectable via the Control Center, enhances battery efficiency by completely deactivating the NVIDIA dGPU after a system restart, allowing the system to rely solely on the energy-efficient AMD iGPU. A MUX switch also enables users to switch the internal display connection between the dGPU and iGPU.

In terms of content creation and workstation performance, the XMG APEX 17 MAX with the Ryzen 9 7945HX is on par with the XMG NEO 17 featuring the Core i9-14900HX. However, the AMD-based laptop operates significantly more efficiently, particularly in these demanding scenarios, as demonstrated by XMG's internal benchmarks:

Two M.2 SSDs, up to 96 GB RAM, and comprehensive connectivity
The XMG APEX 17 MAX offers two M.2 SSD slots with PCI Express 4.0 connections and two SO-DIMM sockets that support up to 96 GB DDR5 RAM. Configurations up to 64 GB operate at a maximum of 5200 MHz, while the 96 GB configuration, using two 48 GB modules, runs at 4800 MHz. As is typical for XMG, the laptop's interior is easily accessible through a screw-fastened bottom shell, allowing for straightforward upgrades.

In terms of external display support, the APEX 17 MAX can natively drive up to three additional monitors via HDMI 2.1 and Mini DisplayPort 1.4a (both connected to the dGPU) as well as a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 interface with integrated DisplayPort (connected to the iGPU). The laptop's second USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port supports 100-watt Power Delivery. Additional connectivity includes two USB-A 3.2 ports (Gen 2 and Gen 1), Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi 6E, and a Full HD webcam with temporal noise reduction and a privacy shutter.

With its generous 17.3-inch chassis, the laptop accommodates a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad, separate full-size arrow keys, an Fn-Lock function, and a multi-colour, customisable backlight. The 150 x 90 mm touchpad is Microsoft Precision compliant for accurate and responsive input.

Pricing, availability and early bird discount campaign
The base configuration of the XMG APEX 17 MAX, which can be freely configured on bestware.com, includes AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, 16 GB DDR5-5200 RAM, a 500 GB SSD, and a 165 Hz fast WQHD display with 100% DCI-P3 and sRGB color space coverage. The starting price is €1,599, including 19% VAT. Upgrades, such as an RTX 4070 (€295) and additional RAM or SSD storage, are available for an additional charge. The XMG APEX 17 MAX is in stock and available to order with immediate effect. To celebrate the product launch, all configurations are eligible for a 5% early bird discount by using the code "APEX-5", valid until September 30th.

The bottom shell of XMG APEX 17 MAX can be easily removed by unscrewing 14 identical screws. A PH1 screwdriver fits best, but PH0 will also work. Once the bottom shell is removed, the following internal layout is revealed:

xmg-apex-17-max_m24_inside.jpg

Under the thermal unit, the GPU is located on the left and the CPU on the right in this picture. The two SO-DIMM RAM slots are arranged south of the CPU in a "sandwich" layout. The SSD slots are located to the left and right of the RAM slots. The Wi-Fi module is mounted to the left of the 73-Wh battery. The battery is secured with four screws and is replaceable like in all XMG laptops.

The ports on the rear (including Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, LAN, USB-C) and on the user's right side of the laptop (again USB-C, plus USB-A 3.2 Gen2) are located on the mainboard. On the left side (top in the photo right) are audio and the second USB-A port on a small daughter-board.

Two lousy USB A ports...

2x USB-A, and 2x USB-C.

Indeed, that's just an OK USB setup, no stellar. Looking at current market filter (Geizhals) with 17" and minimum of 8GB VRAM, only ~25% of listed SKUs have more than 4 USB ports (including TBT) in total.

The I/O port layout of this mainboard and daughter board is designed to also fit into a 15.6" chassis, but we only carry it in its 17.3" form factor. The high number of other ports (including Mini DP, which tends to be more reliable with VR headsets, super high-res monitors and longer cables, compared to DP over USB-C) and the large fan exhaust areas prohibit adding more USB ports.

Best Regards,
Tom

@XMG Support in other words, you agree with all my prior statements, got it. That chassis fits a void of lost potential. And instead we get to dig trough 14 Screws to keep away from the dissapointment.
