Acer today introduced the Acer Swift Edge (SFA16-41), the world's lightest 16-inch OLED laptop. Designed to help maximize the productivity and creativity demands of the present-day hybrid workforce, the 16-inch laptop is powered by AMD Ryzen PRO 6000 Series and AMD Ryzen 6000 Series processors and incorporates the Microsoft Pluton security processor, shipped on by default, to help defend against increasingly sophisticated attacks. The Acer Swift Edge also features a 4K OLED display supporting 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 500 nits peak brightness for cinema-grade visuals.

The 16-inch lightweight laptop boasts a simple yet sleek design. PC hardware specialist Acer today on Twitter announced its official entry into the discrete GPU market with its own-brand Intel Arc GPUs. The company will be pulling its gaming-oriented Predator branding for the launch of its very own Intel Arc A770, the Predator BiFrost. Despite going in with the newest discrete GPU manufacturer, Acer's attempt at taking on the thin-margin discrete GPU field marks an interesting entry - at least from a design standpoint. The new Arc A770 BiFrost features an asymmetrical dual-fan setup peppered with RGB lighting and industrial detailing throughout in what seems to be a semi-blower-type design. The card's design is somewhat reminiscent of NVIDIA's take on its Founder Editions, with a number of visible screws that help break up the visual continuity. It also sports a dual 8-pin power delivery circuit - beefier than Intel's own take on the Arc A770, which we've just unboxed.

Best-known for its pre-constructed desktops, laptops, and monitors, Acer is now seemingly looking to dip its toes into the discrete GPU market. Unfortunately, Acer's announcement is bereft of details; there's only a render of the card and no actual specifications on whether the company will be offering the 8 GB version Arc A770, its 16 GB cousin, or both. It's also unknown whether the company is planning on extending its reach towards other Arc models or even other manufacturers such as AMD and NVIDIA, but it does make sense that it's forging ahead with a single manufacturer first.

Acer Inc. (TWSE: 2353) announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2022: consolidated revenues were NT$72.32 billion; gross profits were NT$8.0 billion with 11.1% margin; operating income was NT$2.17 billion with 3.0% margin; and net income was NT$1.72 billion with 2.4% margin and earnings per share of NT$0.58.

Since the first quarter, Acer has focused on enhancing its supply chain management and product sell out. The second quarter ended with inventory value at NT$63.44 million, marking a slight decline from the first quarter. In addition, Acer's Vero line of eco-conscious devices and glasses-free stereoscopic 3D SpatialLabs products have sold well worldwide.

Worldwide shipments of traditional PCs declined 15.3% year over year to 71.3 million units in the second quarter of 2022 (2Q22), according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. This was the second consecutive quarter of lower shipments following two years of growth. The decline was worse than expected as supply and logistics further deteriorated due to the lockdowns in China and persistent macroeconomic headwinds.

"Fears over a recession continue to mount and weaken demand across segments," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile Device trackers. "Consumer demand for PCs has weakened in the near term and is at risk of perishing in the long term as consumers become more cautious about their spending and once again grow accustomed to computing across device types such as phones and tablets. Meanwhile, commercial demand has been more robust although it has also declined as businesses delay purchases."

Last week, Acer unveiled its first two consumer implementations of its SpatialLabs 3D displays and the company is demoing its SpatialLabs technology at Computex this week, which gave TPU a chance to get some hands, or rather eyes on time. At the time Acer released the press release, it wasn't really clear how these displays work and we can now provide a lot more details on what makes these displays so special. The displays rely on a special lenticular lens, a pair of eye-tracking cameras and some very clever software algorithms. When the 3D mode is disabled, it looks just as sharp as any other display and there weren't any visible distortions or other distractions on the panel. Acer had multiple demos at its booth, of which one was an interactive demo with hand tracking, where you could pick items out of a treasure chest. Another demo showed various 3D renders and in both cases, the objects were protruding out of the display, as well as extending inwards and it was very convincing 3D demos, especially considering no glasses were involved.

The demos that matter more to the TPU readership should be the game demos, of which the main one was God of War running on a desktop PC. Acer claims to support some 500 game titles today and although a custom launcher is required to get the 3D effect in games, Acer told us that games from Steam, Epic etc. should work just fine via its launcher. Here the 3D effect is more of a depth effect, since unless the game in question incorporates support for the display, there's no way to get objects in the game to protrude out of the display. The game did get that extra 3D dimension that older solutions that rely on glasses had, but the overall feeling was very different. Sadly there's no way of presenting what it was like using the display, but it was very much an impressive experience.

AMD today announced the Ryzen 5000C line of mobile processors for Chromebooks. This is the company's second generation of Chromebook-specific processors after the Ryzen 3000C series based on the original "Zen" microarchitecture. The 5000C series chips are based on "Zen 3," with CPU core counts of up to 8-core, and hence present a big leap in performance over the 3000C series, along with a complete suite of the latest connectivity, display technology, and security and management features specific to Chrome OS.

The Ryzen 5000C series is based on the 7 nm "Cezanne" monolithic silicon. The chip physically features an 8-core/16-thread CPU based on the "Zen 3" microarchitecture, with 16 MB of shared L3 cache; an iGPU based on the Vega graphics architecture, with 8 compute units (512 stream processors), a dual-channel DDR4 or LPDDR4/x memory interface, and unlike the conventional Ryzen 5000-series mobile processors, these chips come with a special microcode to match the security and management features of Chrome OS. AMD also supplies Chromebook vendors with timely driver updates for the various components on these chips.

Global shipments of traditional PCs, including desktops, notebooks, and workstations, declined 5.1% in the first quarter of 2022 (1Q22) but exceeded earlier forecasts, according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The PC market is coming off two years of double-digit growth, so while the first quarter decline is a change in this momentum, it doesn't mean the industry is in a downward spiral. Despite ongoing supply chain and logistical challenges, vendors still shipped 80.5 million PCs during the quarter. The 1Q22 volume marks the seventh consecutive quarter where global shipments surpassed 80 million, a feat not seen since 2012.

"The focus shouldn't be on the year-over-year decline in PC volumes because that was to be expected. The focus should be on the PC industry managing to ship more than 80 million PCs at a time when logistics and supply chain are still a mess, accompanied by numerous geopolitical and pandemic-related challenges," said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "We have witnessed some slowdown in both the education and consumer markets, but all indicators show demand for commercial PCs remains very strong. We also believe that the consumer market will pick up again in the near future. The result of 1Q22 was PC shipment volumes that were near record levels for a first quarter."

Intel in March 2022 kicked off its ambitious campaign to grab a slice of the consumer graphics market, with its Arc "Alchemist" line of discrete GPUs, based on the Xe-HPG graphics architecture. The announcement mentioned an immediate availability of at least the entry-level Arc 3-series GPU models in notebooks generally available. These GPU models include the Arc A350M and Arc A370M. People on social media are beginning to ask Intel why these notebooks are nowhere in sight, and the company responded.

In response to one such query by a user, Intel Support stated that laptops with Arc will be available "by the end of the second quarter of 2022." This would put general availability in June 2022, two months from now. Interestingly, this hasn't stopped laptop manufacturers from raking in pre-orders, with the likes of the Acer Swift X and Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro up for "grabs." You can "purchase" the Swift X, but shipping dates are stated to be as late as May 23 (now pushed to June 13).

We recently reported on the unnamed discrete Intel Arc Alchemist GPU found in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro. That listing has now been removed but Finnish retailer Proshop has posted two models of the upcoming Acer Swift X laptop featuring Intel Arc A370M graphics cards. The listings include a Core i5-1240P and Core i7-1260P model each featuring 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and an Intel Arc A370M GPU available to pre-order for 1299 EUR and 1549 EUR respectively.

The Intel Arc A370M is based on the DG2-128EU GPU and is expected to feature 4 GB of VRAM on a 64-bit memory bus. The Intel Arc Alchemist discrete mobile graphics cards will be officially unveiled by Intel on March 30th with claims of a 2x performance improvement from the integrated 96EU Iris-XE GPU found in the Core i7-12700H. The Acer Swift X laptops are listed by Proshop as not being available until May 25th almost 2 months after the official announcement.

Acer Inc. (2353.TW) announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2021 and fiscal 2021 ended December 31. For the fourth quarter, Acer reported consolidated revenues of NT$86.53 billion; gross profits of NT$9.92 billion with 11.5% margin; operating income of NT$3.91 billion, with 4.5% margin; net income of NT$2.24 billion, and earnings per share (EPS) of NT$0.75.

For the full year of 2021, Acer reported consolidated revenues of NT$319.01 billion, gross profits of NT$37.19 billion with 11.7% margin, operating income of NT$14.16 billion with 58.5% in year-on-year (YoY) growth and a record high 4.4% margin. The net income of NT$10.90 billion and EPS of NT$3.63 were both the highest in 11 years.

Acer Inc. (TWSE: 2353) announced today its consolidated revenues for February 2022 at NT$22.91 billion, the highest in eight years for the same period. The February revenues grew by 12.7% year-on-year (YoY), and year-to-February revenues of NT$48.06 billion grew by 9.7% YoY. Acer Inc. announced today its consolidated revenues for January 2022 at NT$25.16 billion to reach an eight-year high for the same period. The January revenues grew by 7.1% year-on-year (YoY), and declined by 14.8% month-on-month due to seasonality. Logistics issues continue to be a bottleneck, while semi-conductor shortages are easing.

Acer's strategy to build multiple business engines continues to gain momentum. Meanwhile, businesses other than PCs and displays contributed to 19.0% of total revenues, compared to 16.1% contribution in January 2021. Among the Acer Group subsidiaries, the publicly-listed companies have all announced their January revenues, while Acer Gaming's revenues grew by 29.3% YoY and Acer Gadget's revenues grew by 24.9% YoY.

Acer today announced that it will begin carrying PCs which run on Windows 11 SE, starting with the Acer TravelMate B3 and Acer TravelMate Spin B3 laptops. The portable 11.6-inch laptops were built to survive the school-day, boasting military-grade durability certifications and a 10-hour battery life, and now come pre-installed with Windows 11 SE or Windows 11 Pro Education. Additionally, the devices' chassis have been constructed with over 14% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Acer has been working closely with Microsoft in order to provide devices for pilot programs that bring Windows 11 SE to schools around the world. It is one of the first brands to carry devices featuring the new operating system.

Acer Inc. announced today its consolidated revenues for December 2021 at NT$29.52 billion, marking the highest in nine years for the same period, and growing by 4.0% year-over-year (YoY) and by 2.3% month-over-month (MoM). Preliminary consolidated revenues for Q4'21 ended at NT$86.38 billion, with 4.6% growth YoY and 6.5% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ), and for full year 2021 ended at NT$318.85 billion with 15.1% growth YoY. In full year 2021, businesses other than PCs and displays contributed to 17.6% of total revenues, compared to 15.4% contribution in 2020.
