ASUS First OEM to Show Off Custom Radeon RX 7900-series Cards

Although we're over a month away from any kind of actual availability of AMD's just announced Radeon RX 7900 cards, ASUS has already shown off what is the first custom Radeon RX 7900-series cards. The two cards are the TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX and unsurprisingly the TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XT. ASUS has gone for what the company calls a 3.63-slot design and the TUF cards appear to be a fair bit taller than the AMD reference designs. ASUS has gone with larger fans, which requires a bigger cooler shroud and the company claims they provide 13.8 percent more airflow and an eight percent increase in static pressure compared to its last gen—presumably Radeon RX 6900—cards, while maintaining the same noise level.

ASUS claims to have added wider vents on the backplate to help improve airflow and to have increased the total heat dissipation area by 22.8 percent, whatever that actually means, as ASUS didn't show off the rear of its cards. The TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX sports three 8-pin power connectors and has a 17+4 power stage design. Unlike AMD's reference cards, the ASUS TUF cards won't have a USB-C port at the rear, as the company has gone for three DP 2.1 ports and one HDMI 2.1 port. ASUS didn't reveal clock speeds and the remaining specs are as announced by AMD.

Danish Retailer Proshop.dk Lists GeForce RTX 4080 Graphics Cards

Danish online retailer Proshop.dk jumped the gun with listing its stock of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada" graphics cards. These include custom-design cards from ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE, and Inno3D. While pictures of GIGABYTE and Inno3D cards weren't up, the site put out pictures of ASUS ROG Strix, TUF Gaming; and MSI Gaming X and Ventus 3X models. Prices range between 12,190 Danish Krone (US $1,626) to 14,590 Krone ($1,946), including taxes. The pictures give us our first look at MSI's new cost-effective Ventus 3X custom-design, which will be positioned close to NVIDIA's baseline MSRP (of $1,199 for the RTX 4080). The ASUS ROG Strix, TUF Gaming, and MSI Gaming X designs appear identical their RTX 4090 siblings. These listings appear at least 16 days ahead of when these cards are expected to be available from.

ASUS did not mention the manufacturer of the WLAN controller, and isn't listing drivers yet, so it could be either Intel or MediaTek. The company didn't reveal pricing, but it is expected to be around the $50-mark.

ASUS Turkey Leaks Details of AMD's Upcoming Ryzen 7000 Mobile CPU

ASUS Turkey has jumped the gun and revealed ASUS' upcoming Zenbook 14 laptop, which in itself might not be a big deal, but the UM3402 as the specific model is known as, will apparently be available with an AMD Ryzen 7 7730U CPU. As AMD has as yet to unveil such a CPU, it appears that ASUS Turkey has gotten ahead of things. A quick search for the Zenbook 14 SKU in question reveals that the current UM3402 model has a Ryzen 5825U processor.

The remaining specs appear identical to the current model, but this is clearly not a typo, as the CPU SKU is mentioned at multiple points on the product page. Based on AMD's CPU model name "decoder", the Ryzen 7 7730U is based on a Zen 3 or a Zen 3+ core that sits in the 15-28 W TDP range. According to Videocardz, it will be using an AMD Vega based GPU. Beyond that, we don't know any specifics about the CPU, but one thing that stands out and may or may not be correct, is that the Zenbook 14 is only listed as supporting two USB 3.2 10 Gbps USB-C ports, rather than USB4, which seems a bit odd. Then again, this is a lower-tier CPU, so it's possible that this is the reason for lack of USB4 support. The fact that ASUS has moved to an IPS based display, from an OLED display on the current UM3402 SKU, also suggests that this might be a cheaper model in ASUS lineup.

Intel Core i9-13900K Breaks Overclocking World Record at 8.8 GHz

Intel Core i9-13900K processor has just been launched, and overclockers worldwide got their hand on a few samples to make history. According to the HWBot submission, a Swedish overclocker named "elmor" has pushed Intel's top-end consumer SKU to a fantastic 8.812 GHz. For more than eight years, the record for the single-highest overclocking speed was held by AMD FX-8370, from the now-bygone era of AMD Black Edition processors. The overclocking attempt was performed using liquid nitrogen (LN2) that cools the chip using its −195.8 °C temperature. Pushing core voltage to 1.850 Volts and VCCIN to 2 Volts, multiplier set to x88, and a bus speed of 100.15 MHz. In addition to the Core i9-13900K CPU, elmor used ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 APEX motherboard and 32 GB DDR5 GSKILL memory running at 4808 MT/s.

As a reminder, the FX-8370 CPU was holding the number one sport for eight years with a speed of 8.722 GHz. Beating the FX-8370 by just 90 MHz, it will be interesting to see if any of the upcoming CPU SKUs can match this overclocking record, and we are curious if any contender will come to beat elmor's current record.

MSI Raises Price of RTX 4090 SUPRIM Liquid X in a Week: Underpriced Just for Reviews?

MSI debuted its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM Liquid X graphics card to gleaming reviews as one of the few custom-design RTX 4090 cards that fits inside a 2-slot design, freeing up expansion slots on your motherboard, thanks to its AIO liquid cooling solution. One of the most striking aspects of the card was its MSRP of USD $1,750, a mere $150 (9% premium), which made the card look like an overall great purchase, given that ASUS was pricing the air-cooled 4-slot ROG Strix RTX 4090 OC at $2,000 (25% premium). This had an impact on the SUPRIM's performance-per-Dollar calculations in reviews, in relation to pricier options. It turns out that MSI has revised the price of the RTX 4090 SUPRIM Liquid X a mere 1 week into its launch, increasing it by $185.

The card is now priced at $1,935 (20% premium over NVIDIA baseline), closer to that of the ASUS ROG Strix. This isn't a marked-up price by a retailer, but the latest price on MSI's first-party online store for the US market. Price premiums of custom-design RTX 4090 cards have been conservative across the board, particularly for a flagship card like the SUPRIM Liquid X, but a price revision this soon after launch doesn't go down well with buyers, and makes it seem like the card was underpriced just for the reviews—something ASUS avoided when they priced the ROG Strix at $2,000 right off the bat. And yes, we are mindful of the concept of introductory pricing, but only when it's advertised as such. An introductory price is meant to be disclosed to be as such, making buyers [and reviewers] aware that the card's actual MSRP is something else/higher. When we contact companies for pricing to use in our reviews, we clearly seek MSRPs, and not introductory pricing for the company to sell a tiny inventory at low prices, only to raise them a week later.

Update 10:26 UTC: The price on the MSI website is now back to $1750. Those who bought the card at $1,935 are being refunded the price difference. More on this here.

ASUS Unveils Exclusive PBO Enhancement for AMD X670, B650 Motherboards

These latest CPUs push the limits of performance farther than ever before. They dynamically take advantage of available thermal headroom to give users higher clock speeds. This means that users might see higher CPU temperatures than they are used to in a new AMD Ryzen-powered machine. To put users in control, ASUS is rolling out a BIOS update for its X670 and B650 motherboards with new options for its PBO enhancement feature that makes it easy to balance thermals and performance. With just a few clicks, users will be able to dramatically reduce CPU temperatures—and maybe even increase performance and reduce fan noise in the process.

Powering all the entertainment is up to an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of memory and immersive Harman Kardon audio.

EK Rolls Out New Water Blocks with Active- and Passive-Backplates for RTX 4090 ROG Strix and TUF Gaming

EK, the premium liquid cooling gear manufacturer, is now introducing the ultimate water cooling solution for ROG Strix and ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards. EK-Quantum Vector² Strix/TUF RTX 4090 D-RGB comes in the form of a water block with a passive backplate or a cooling solution with an active backplate that's sandwiching the card between two water blocks for the best possible cooling results.

The all-new RTX 4090 Strix and TUF cards are expected to be significantly more powerful than their 30-series counterparts. And while their efficiency is also improved, these cards still pull over 450 W, which means they will benefit even more from water cooling, mainly due to the 4 nm production process, which increases thermal density compared to the previous 8 nm chips.

Amazon US Lists Pair of ASUS Z790 Motherboards with Pricing

Amazon US has kindly revealed the pricing for a pair of upcoming Intel Z790 chipset based motherboards from ASUS. For those hoping for better motherboard pricing versus AMD's X670 based boards, we have to be the bringer of bad news, as the two fall in the same ballpark, although Intel seems to have a slight edge here. The cheaper of the two models is the ASUS Prime Z790-P WiFi, which is the Intel equivalent to the Prime X670-P board for AMD's AM5 socket. The Prime Z790-P offers slightly weaker connectivity around the back, but has more PCIe slots compared to its AMD sibling. Unfortunately, it seems like Amazon doesn't stock the Prime X670-P, so we had to look elsewhere for pricing and Newegg charges US$289.99 for it, whereas Amazon charges US$249.99 for the Prime Z790-P, making it a more attractive option. However, that's still US$30 more than its predecessor, the Prime Z690-P, making this a pretty steep jump in price considering the two are very similar in terms of what you get for your money.

The second board is the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero, which is a premium product, something that's reflected in the pricing as well. Features like Thunderbolt 4 and an ROG Hyper M.2 card for PCIe 5.0 SSDs are included here, as well as an extended bundle. There's no direct AMD equivalent here, as ASUS only has a model in the US$400 range and one in the US$1000 range on the AMD side. However, it appears that ASUS has decided to keep the same price point as the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero. This isn't entirely surprising, as the boards appear to be almost identical, bar some change to the layout to the rear I/O. At US$629.99, this isn't a cheap board, but it wasn't expected either, as ASUS does charge a premium price for its ROG products. Both boards are said to be shipping from the 20th of October.
