Greenpeace Updates its E-Waste Report of Manufacturers

I once posted a news story on how well computer manufacturers are treating the environment according to the Greenpeace organization. Well I'm going to give you a little update on that story today. Last time Nintendo was the worst among worst when talking "green" and this year it is strengthening its position even more. From zero to eleven in being "green" (zero means worst) Nintendo scores the whooping 0. HP, Microsoft, Lenovo and Dell are next to have poor scores when it comes to preserving the world we live in. According to Greenpeace only Apple is "truly kicking the habit", maybe that's because they have an apple as their logo. Philips learned a lesson from last Greenpeace research and the company jumps from 15th to 4th place this year, well done Philips. The two best "green" manufacturers as of March 31st 2009 are Samsung and Nokia.

Greenpeace Begins Campaign Against Console Manufacturers

Greenpeace, as the name suggests, seeks to make the natural world a better place for everyone. They recently noticed that console manufacturers certainly aren't doing a good job of helping the environment. And so, they started up the "Clash of the Consoles" website, which jests at the environmental unfriendliness of a typical console. The campaign's main purpose is to raise awareness of the toxic chemicals inside the typical console (such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)), and entice manufacturers to make better consoles. Please read the source article for a detailed list of the exact problems each console has, and what each manufacturer is doing about the alleged toxicity of each console.

Nintendo, Microsoft and Philips Fail to Show Any Environmental Credentials

The latest edition of Greenpeace's quarterly Guide to Greener Electronics published yesterday, revealed that Nintendo, Microsoft and Philips completely fail to show any environmental credentials when it comes to e-waste. The Guide ranks companies according to their policies and practices on toxic chemicals and takeback. Along with mobile phone and personal computer companies, the latest report adds the biggest makers of TVs and games consoles. Old TVs are a large part of e-waste and the games console market is one of the fastest growing in consumer electronics according to Greenpeace.
Nintendo has the dubious honour of being the first company to score 0/10 in the guide. Microsoft did little better, scoring only 2.7. Philips is the lowest TV-maker scoring only 2.
