AMD Zen 5 Linux Kernel Patches Point to Power Management Updates

AMD released its latest PMC (power management controller) driver patches for the Linux kernel, which reference a yet unreleased "Family 1Ah" processors. Phoronix believes this is the first reference to AMD's next generation "Zen 5" microarchitecture in the PMC driver. We've already seen AMD EPYC "Turin" server processors based on "Zen 5" in the flesh, and it's likely that AMD is handing these out to some of its biggest data-center customers for testing and evaluation, before giving them some final touches and green-lighting mass-production in 2024. The patches themselves are barely two new lines of code, and talk about a new sleep state called "s2idle." This is a software-defined system sleep state. The EPYC "Turin" processor comes in two packages, one with up to 128 "Zen 5" cores, and another with up to 192 "Zen 5c" cores for cloud applications.

Memblaze and PMC Partner to Provide High-Performance PCIe SSDs

PMC-Sierra, Inc. (PMC), the semiconductor and software solutions innovator transforming networks that connect, move and store big data, today announced that Memblaze Technology Co. Ltd, a leading provider of flash storage solutions, is utilizing PMC's Flashtec NVM Express (NVMe) controllers in its next-generation PCI Express (PCIe) flash accelerators.

The Flashtec-based Memblaze PBlaze4 products are targeted at hyperscale and Open Compute Project deployments. They provide ultra-low latency and the lowest CPU load in the industry, with read and write capabilities of up to 850,000 I/Os per second (IOPS) for random read and 265,000 IOPS for random write and 3.2 GB/s sequential read, 2.5 GB/s sequential write performance. Memblaze products enable its customers to define and alter key settings to ensure optimum performance in specific applications and platforms.

PMC Unveils the Flashtec NVRAM Drives

PMC, the semiconductor and software solutions innovator transforming networks that connect, move and store big data, today established a new ultra-fast storage class memory tier to accelerate critical applications in scale-out storage and all-flash arrays. The PMC Flashtec NVRAM Drives combine the speed and endurance of DRAM with the persistency of NAND flash to deliver ten times higher performance than the fastest Solid State Drive (SSD), at more than 10 million I/Os per second (IOPS), with sub-microsecond latency.

Leveraging PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0, the Flashtec NVRAM Drives connect directly to the host to optimize CPU utilization and maximize overall system performance. The latest member of PMC's enterprise-class Flashtec portfolio of controllers and drives, the new solutions are based on the industry-standard NVMe interface to enable plug-and-play PCIe connectivity, which decreases time to market in data center and enterprise storage deployments.

PMC Delivers Industry's First End-to-End 12Gb/s SAS Solution with SSD Controller

PMC, the semiconductor innovator transforming storage, optical and mobile networks, today announced its 12Gb/s SAS flash manager (SFM-12G) for the next wave of enterprise solid state drives (SSDs). With this introduction, PMC has delivered the industry's first end-to-end 12Gb/s SAS solution, from the protocol controller to the SSD controller.

PMC's SFM-12G enables more than 300,000 I/Os per second (IOPS) in a 2.5" SAS SSD, more than double the performance of today's 6Gb/s SAS SSDs. When paired with the industry's highest-performing protocol controller, PMC's SPCv 12G, cloud server and big data storage manufacturers can deliver a stunning 2.4 million IOPS in an eight-drive, enterprise-class flash subsystem.
