QNAP Extends Security Updates for EOL Products

QNAP Systems, Inc., today announced that it has extended the end date of Technical Support and Security Updates for some End of Life (EOL) models, helping users to defend against evolving security threats and allowing users to have more time to implement device upgrades. EOL models may lack computational capabilities, be short on operational memory, be unable to receive up-to-date component drivers, or possess other technical constraints or deprecated technology.

Due to these reasons, QNAP normally maintains security updates for 4 years after a product passes its EOL date. As a special effort to help users protect their devices from today's security threats, QNAP has extended security updates for some EOL models till October 2022. The support for EOL models will be limited to high or critical security updates until the end of Technical Support and Security Updates date. For users to protect data from security threats growing along with the technology, QNAP recommends that users do not connect the EOL device to the internet.

QNAP Launches Affordable 16-Port SFP28 Layer 2 Managed Switch

Although most people use WiFi for their network connectivity these days, there are times when a wired connection is needed, say for large file transfer and backups. We've finally seen a transition onwards from Gigabit Ethernet on the humble desktop PC, but for some 2.5 Gbps isn't enough and 10 Gbps has become more and more of a viable option. However, it seems like QNAP has decided that 10 Gbps is getting a bit long in the tooth and as such, the company has introduced a 16-port SFP28 switch, for those that are craving even faster LAN speeds.

The QSW-M5216-1T has a combined switching capacity of 820 Gbps and all of the 25 Gbps SFP28 ports are backwards compatible with 10 Gbps SFP+ based network cards. There's also a single multi-gig capable RJ45 port that goes from 100 Mps to 10 Gbps, plus a 1 Gbps management port, as well as a serial port around the back for management. The QSW-M5216-1T is also capable of combining four ports into a 100 Gbps capable link, when combined with QNAP's QXG-100G2SF-E810 100 Gbps capable network card, although it retails for north of US$1,000. A more reasonable alternative would be the US$219 QXG-25G2SF-CX4 dual-port 25 Gbps card, which seems quite reasonably priced for the speeds on offer.

QNAP and ULINK Release DA Drive Analyzer, AI-powered Drive Failure Prediction Tool for NAS

QNAP, partnered with ULINK Technology, to launch the DA Drive Analyzer. By leveraging cloud-based AI, this drive failure prediction tool allows users to take proactive steps to protect against server downtime and data loss by replacing drives before they fail. The DA Drive Analyzer leverages statistics generated from ULINK's cloud AI portal. Driven by historical usage data of millions of drives provided by users just like yourself, the DA Drive Analyzer's drive health prediction applies machine learning to track historical behaviors and is able to find drive failure events that won't be flagged by traditional diagnostics tools that rely on S.M.A.R.T. thresholds. Its user interface is also much more friendly and intuitive, allowing you to make plans to replace drives based on clearly defined drive information.

"Artificial Intelligence is a new technology that has tackled many real-life problems. By applying this technology to disk failure prediction, ULINK can actively and continuously monitor drives, detect problems, predict failures, and notify end users with our unique cloud-based data processing system. We are fortunate to have worked with QNAP to create this service, and we believe that many will benefit from it," said Joseph Chen, CEO of ULINK Technology.
