AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Drops to $799, Pressure on RTX 4070 Ti

Graphics card prices on a much-needed downward spiral, and this doesn't spare even the enthusiast class of graphics cards. The AMD flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX is available for as low as $799 with retailer promotions. Specifically, an ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming graphics card is listed on Newegg for $899, with a coupon shaving off a further $100. That's a 30% departure from the $999 MSRP of AMD for the RX 7900 XTX.

At $799, the RX 7900 XTX applies pressure on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, as the RX 7900 XTX can now be had at its MSRP. The RX 7900 XTX is on average 31% faster than the RTX 4070 Ti at 4K Ultra HD in our testing (the intended use-case of the RX 7900 XTX), and about 21% faster than the RTX 4070 Ti at 1440p (intended use-case of the RTX 4070 Ti). The RTX 4070 Ti is about 4% to 9% faster at real-time ray tracing.

Radeon RX 7800 XT Based on New ASIC with Navi 31 GCD on Navi 32 Package?

AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT will be a much-needed performance-segment addition to the company's Radeon RX 7000-series, which has a massive performance gap between the enthusiast-class RX 7900 series, and the mainstream RX 7600. A report by "Moore's Law is Dead" makes a sensational claim that it is based on a whole new ASIC that's neither the "Navi 31" powering the RX 7900 series, nor the "Navi 32" designed for lower performance tiers, but something in between. This GPU will be AMD's answer to the "AD103." Apparently, the GPU features the same exact 350 mm² graphics compute die (GCD) as the "Navi 31," but on a smaller package resembling that of the "Navi 32." This large GCD is surrounded by four MCDs (memory cache dies), which amount to a 256-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface, and 64 MB of 2nd Gen Infinity Cache memory.

The GCD physically features 96 RDNA3 compute units, but AMD's product managers now have the ability to give the RX 7800 XT a much higher CU count than that of the "Navi 32," while being lower than that of the RX 7900 XT (which is configured with 84). It's rumored that the smaller "Navi 32" GCD tops out at 60 CU (3,840 stream processors), so the new ASIC will enable the RX 7800 XT to have a CU count anywhere between 60 to 84. The resulting RX 7800 XT could have an ASIC with a lower manufacturing cost than that of a theoretical Navi 31 with two disabled MCDs (>60 mm² of wasted 6 nm dies), and even if it ends up performing within 10% of the RX 7900 XT (and matching the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti in the process), it would do so with better pricing headroom. The same ASIC could even power mobile RX 7900 series, where the smaller package and narrower memory bus will conserve precious PCB footprint.

GIGABYTE Readies GeForce RTX 4070 Ti AORUS Xtreme WaterForce Series

GIGABYTE released liquid-cooled graphics cards based on the performance-segment GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. The company is catering to both the DIY liquid cooling and turnkey liquid cooling market segments with the RTX 4070 Ti AORUS Xtreme WaterForce series. The RTX 4070 Ti AORUS Xtreme WB comes with a factory-fitted full-coverage water block that you connect to your own liquid-cooling loop; while the RTX 4070 Ti AORUS Xtreme lugs an AIO liquid cooling solution.

The AORUS Xtreme WaterForce WB uses a nickel-plated copper full-coverage water block that's been tailored for the PCB layout underneath, with an acrylic top, and some vinyl decals. The acrylic top is studded with addressable RGB LEDs. The AORUS Xtreme WaterForce (AIO based) card, on the other hand, uses an AIO cooling solution with a design resembling that of the company's RTX 3080 AORUS Xtreme WaterForce. This card uses a purely-liquid cooling solution (unlike some other brands with an air+liquid hybrid design). The pump-block in the card is responsible not just for the GPU, but also the memory and VRM (over secondary base-plates). A 240 mm x 120 mm radiator is used, which should be just about enough for a 300 W TGP graphics card. GIGABYTE could formally launch these two cards very soon, as the press images are already out.

Leadtek Showcases NVIDIA GeForce WinFast RTX 40-series Hurricane Models at Computex 2023

Leadtek revealed its GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Hurricane custom graphics card at the tail end of last month. The latest refresh of the company's Hurricane cooling solution looked very space age with its curved central X-formation design. Leadtek has chosen to expand upon this aesthetic with bigger brother NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series cards shown off at Computex this week. The company's WinFast GPU lineup has grown with the additions of RTX 4090 Hurricane 24G, RTX 4080 Hurricane 16G, RTX 4070 Ti Hurricane 12G and RTX 4070 Hurricane 12G models.

All of these units sport metal backplates, but there are some differences in the makeup of attached cooling solutions. The RTX 4090 and 4080 models are cooled by a triple (100 m) fan array and eight heat pipes. The RTX 4070 Ti sports three "large" fans (size not specified) and six heat pipes. The RTX 4070 (non-Ti) makes do with only a pair of "large" fans, but has the same number of heat pipes (six) as its immediate sibling, albeit packed into a much shorter surround.

NVIDIA Could be Reducing RTX 4070 GPU Production, Palit Card Price Cut Reported in UK

NVIDIA's fresh faced GeForce RTX 4070 graphic card range has not been flying off shelves around the world, and Team Green could be pivoting their approach somewhat after receiving lower than expected sales figures via company reports. Their component suppliers have already mentioned that the entire GeForce RTX 40 family is on a comfortably steady production schedule - with no instructions received from HQ to up the ante. In the latest development this week, individuals with insider knowledge of factory schedules in China have claimed that NVIDIA has informed board partners (AICs) that output for the GeForce RTX 4070 line is getting paused for a month. The temporary cutoff in factory output will allow, they hope, for the currently sitting stock to get cleared out. A substantial surplus of GeForce RTX 4070 cards could disrupt distribution networks and overstock warehouses.

Industry watchdogs have theorized that NVIDIA's board partners are having a difficult time offloading their premium tier RTX 4070 custom cards onto paying customers. The Founders Edition and closer-to-reference models have sold quite respectable numbers according to early analyses, but more expensive options are considered to be too expensive by the customer base. There is apparent crossover in pricing with the fancier GeForce RTX 4070 Ti range, and a savvy buyer will tend toward superior silicon rather than a shiny cooling solution combined with a factory-issued overclock. A computer hardware retailer in the UK, Novatech, has chosen to cut the price of a Palit RTX 4070 Dual model by £40/$50, as reported yesterday. The asking price has since returned closer to RRP - at the time of writing it stands at £579.98.

AMD Plays the VRAM Card Against NVIDIA

In a blog post, AMD has pulled the VRAM card against NVIDIA, telling potential graphics card buyers that they should consider AMD over NVIDIA, because current and future games will require more VRAM, especially at higher resolution. There's no secret that there has been something of a consensus from at least some of the PC gaming crowd that NVIDIA is being too stingy when it comes to VRAM on its graphics cards and AMD is clearly trying to cash in on that sentiment with its latest blog post. AMD is showing the VRAM usage in games such as Resident Evil 4—with and without ray tracing at that—The Last of US Part I and Hogwarts Legacy, all games that use over 11 GB of VRAM or more.

AMD does have a point here, but as the company has as yet to launch anything below the Radeon RX 7900 XT in the 7000-series, AMD is mostly comparing its 6000-series of cards with NVIDIA's 3000-series of cards, most of which are getting hard to purchase and potentially less interesting for those looking to upgrade their system. That said, AMD also compares its two 7000-series cards to the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti and the RTX 4080, claiming up to a 27 percent lead over NVIDIA in performance. Based on TPU's own tests of some of these games, albeit most likely using different test scenarios, the figures provided by AMD don't seem to reflect real world performance. It's also surprising to see AMD claims its RX 7900 XTX beats NVIDIA's RTX 4080 in ray tracing performance in Resident Evil 4 by 23 percent, where our own tests shows NVIDIA in front by a small margin. Make what you want of this, but one thing is fairly certain and that is that future games will require more VRAM, but most likely the need for a powerful GPU isn't going to go away.

NVIDIA Shares Cyberpunk 2077 RT: Overdrive Mode Performance Numbers

CD PROJEKT RED's Cyberpunk 2077 is already one of the most technologically advanced games available, using several ray tracing techniques to render its neon-illuminated environments and vast Night City visuals at incredible levels of detail. Now, a new Cyberpunk 2077 update has hit the streets, featuring the technology preview of the Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode, which enhances the game's already-amazing visuals with full ray tracing, otherwise known as path tracing.

Full ray tracing accurately simulates light throughout an entire scene. It is used by visual effects artists to create film and TV graphics that are indistinguishable from reality, but until the arrival of GeForce RTX GPUs with RT Cores, and the AI-powered acceleration of NVIDIA DLSS, real-time video game full ray tracing was impossible because it's extremely GPU intensive. Previous techniques separately addressed ray-traced shadows, reflections and global illumination for a small number of light sources. Full ray tracing models the properties of light from a virtually unlimited number of emissive sources, delivering physically correct shadows, reflections and global illumination on all objects. The technology preview for Cyberpunk 2077's Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode is a sneak peek into the future of full ray tracing, and we are working with CD PROJEKT RED on further full ray tracing enhancements, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.

Official NVIDIA RTX 4070 Performance Claims Leak Online

Just a few days before the official launch scheduled for April 13th, the first official performance figures for the RTX 4070 have found their way online. As expected, NVIDIA is showing the performance with DLSS 3 and Frame Generation, comparing it to three graphics cards in the RTX 30 series, the RTX 3080, the RTX 3070 Ti, and the RTX 3070.

According to NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX 4070 is targeting 1440p performance at above 100 FPS, with ray tracing and DLSS 3 enabled, of course. NVIDIA officially did not reveal any performance numbers without DLSS 3, but earlier rumors puts the RTX 4070 at around the same performance as the RTX 3080. With DLSS 3 and according to NVIDIA, the RTX 4070 is 1.4x, 1.7x, and 1.8x times faster, compared to the aforementioned RTX 30 series graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Name Gets Confirmed

Both the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 4060 have been rumored to launch in May, and now the RTX 4060 Ti name has been pretty much confirmed as NVIDIA board partners have received the marketing materials, including the box design template. When the board partners get the box and logo design templates and send out boxes to printing, the name is pretty much carved in stone.

The leak comes from MEGAsizeGPU, and we had a pretty similar leak for the RTX 4070 Ti earlier. Unfortunately, the leaked box design and key features do not reveal or confirm previous rumors about any of the important specifications, so the rumored 8 GB memory or PCIe Gen 4 x8 interface are still not confirmed. One thing is clear, NVIDIA is building up steam and gearing up to launch as many as three new RTX 40 series graphics cards in next two months, with the GeForce RTX 4070 rumored for April 13th launch date, while the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and the GeForce RTX 4060 should launch in May.

Pictures of the Never-Released RTX 4070 Ti Founders Edition, RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition, and RTX 4060 Founders Edition Emerge

When NVIDIA got around to release the $800 GeForce RTX 4070 Ti "Ada" (originally meant to launch as the RTX 4080 12 GB); an NVIDIA Founders Edition product based on this chip was conspicuous in its absence. A tech enthusiast who goes by "KittyYYuko" on Twitter posted pictures of what they claim to be the never-released RTX 4070 Ti Founders Edition; and upcoming RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060. The claim begins to check out as we're shown a picture of a graphics card PCB with the distinct Founders Edition shape, which has an "AD104" ASIC, and a 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, along with 8 memory pads, two of which are unoccupied (matches the 192-bit memory interface of the RTX 4070 Ti).

We are shown two other cards, the RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition, and the RTX 4060 Founders Edition. These are expected to be positioned below the RTX 4070 that the company plans to launch in April. The Founders Edition boards are visibly smaller than even the RTX 3080 Founders Edition, although they stick to the dual-axial flow-through design of that card. "AD106" based graphics cards are expected to have typical graphics power (TGP) values well under the 250 W-mark, for which this cooler looks adequate, considering that the sheet-metal of the heatsink has been pushed to the very edges of the card. The cards could include power adapters that convert no more than two 8-pin PCIe to a 16-pin 12VHPWR with a 300 W power limit.

Maxsun's Mega Gamer GPU RTX 40 Series Sports Five Fans

Chinese board partner Maxsun announced today their new flagship product line dubbed Mega Gamer GPU (MGG) which packs five fans onto RTX 40 series GPUs. The first card to receive this new branding is NVIDIA's RTX 4070 Ti which Maxsun suggests will come with a healthy factory overclock, but they have not yet elaborated on complete specifications. The five fan array isn't the only unique aspect of this new lineup as the overall visual design features a striking rounded shroud with a large magnetically attached top-facing RGB LED panel. The fan arrangement appears at first to be a traditional set of three downward facing ~100 mm fans, but a glance toward the top of the card reveals the last two ~40 mm fans flanking either end. These fans are configured as exhaust fans for the finstack, likely intended to assist in pulling heat up and away from the card instead of blasting it down into the motherboard. The 40 mm fan toward the front of the card appears as though it may actually provide some benefit as it sits directly above the forward VRM to the left side of the GPU die.

For those of you that remember the bygone era of 2012 you'll likely have a light bulb going off in the memory department since this is not the first GPU to pack an excessive amount of fans. Some of Gigabyte's Super Overclock series of GPUs featured five 40 mm fans on a bulky triple-slot design, specifically their GeForce GTX 680 Windforce 5X SOC and exceptionally limited Radeon HD 7970 SoC. Unlike Maxsun's MGG design, these designs arranged all of the fans along the top edge in a "pull" configuration to force air up through the dense fin stack and away from the motherboard. Similarly to Maxsun's MGG these were overclocked cards with a considerably unique visual aesthetic.
