MSI Entering SSD Business with SandForce-Driven Products

While the PC enthusiast community know MSI more to be the people behind some quality motherboards, graphics cards, and notebooks, apart from a few lesser known product lines, the Taiwanese company has a few completely undocumented products. A "case" in point (mind the pun) is its Interceptor line of gaming PC cases, whose launch spread across early 2012, was completely undocumented by MSI public relations. Solid State Drives (SSDs) will soon be MSI's newest frontier, according to no less than LSI-SandForce.

Apparently, MSI has signed up LSI-SandForce as a provider of SSD controllers. The page on the company website that lists all "SandForce-Driven" SSDs includes a column for MSI (including its company logo), with the models column being marked "Coming Soon." This is not the first time MSI got involved with SSD. The company's high-end GT60/GT70 gaming notebooks come with a self-designed SSD RAID solution, that makes use of SanDisk-branded mSATA SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. We have sought more information from MSI.

Icy Dock Announces MB080U3S-1SB Blizzard Tool-Less HDD Enclosure

External enclosures are a great way to have high capacity data storage on the go. Data can also be a critical factor for users in the media business or who work with data centers. Some of the top tier hard drive companies have made their own all in one enclosure with hard drive included. However, one of the known major causes of hard drive failure is due to excessive heat buildup caused by a lack of a proper cooling system.

Also, a majority of hard drive manufactures only allow a 1 year warranty on their all in one external hard drives. This can be fatal for someone who has just lost their data and has to spend a significant amount of money in order to recover their data. There are other external enclosures in the market that provide a cooling system to help prevent this, but the physical placement of the cooling system does not always allow for the optimal airflow to cool the hard drive. Going above and beyond, the MB080U3S-1SB Blizzard is the next generation of external enclosures dedicated for maximum performance in cooling.

ASRock FM2 Lineup Topped Off with FM2A75 Pro4

Although ASRock was bold enough to give its upcoming entry-level FM2A75M-DGS socket FM2 motherboard the SATA 6 Gb/s equipped AMD A75 FCH, the company did not have any motherboards based on the new AMD A85 FCH chipset, on show. It's fair to assume that the company's mid-range ATX motherboard, the FM2A75 Pro4, will be topping up its socket FM2 lineup. Pictured below, the ASRock FM2A75 Pro4 utilizes everything the chipset provides, and adds a few third-party controllers.

The FM2 socket, which supports upcoming AMD "Trinity" APUs, is powered by a 6-phase VRM. There are four DDR3 DIMM slots, supporting DDR3-2400+ MHz by overclocking. The socket is also wired to a PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slot. The second x16 slot is electrical x4, and wired to the A75 FCH. ASRock somehow found it necessary to add three legacy PCI slots, and just two PCI-Express 2.0 x1.

SATA-IO Rolls Out USM Slim Specification for Thinner, Lighter External Storage

The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO), the industry consortium dedicated to sustaining the quality, integrity and dissemination of Serial ATA (SATA) technology, today announced it has finalized a new version of its Universal Storage Module (USM) standard that enables consumers to simply and easily increase the storage capacity of their mobile devices. The USM Slim specification defines a thinner, 9 mm dimension, making it an ideal storage solution for ultrabooks, tablets and other portable devices.

Demand for thinner, lighter mobile devices often results in decreased native storage capacities, limiting the amount of content consumers can carry with them. The USM Slim specification allows manufacturers to develop external storage offerings that seamlessly pair with these thin and light devices so that consumers can still have instant access to their music, movies, photos and other content at any time or place. The smaller form factor now makes it possible for thinner CE devices to integrate the USM host connector or slot to accept the 9 mm module.
