Thecus Announces N5810PRO NAS with Built-in UPS

Many electronic devices, including network-attached storage (NAS), are not designed to have their power supply suddenly cut. Unforeseen circumstances that result in power outages can cause data loss that could set back your business operations significantly.

To prevent such events from occurring with the Thecus N5810PRO, a built-in mini-UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) has been included with the unit. The mini-UPS battery provides emergency power if the main power source where to fail. In the event of a power failure the mini-UPS will stand by for approximately 30 seconds (dependent on services in operation). If power is restored within this time frame, the NAS will continue at its normal state. If power has not been restored, the NAS will commence shut down of all operations.

Thecus Releases Patch to Resolve Bash Vulnerability

In order to combat recent bash vulnerability issues, Thecus today released a Bash patch for both Thecus OS5 and OS6 users. It is strongly recommended that all users update their NAS with this latest firmware. The patch will fix the GNU Bash Environment Variable Command Injection Vulnerability, also referred to as Shellshock (CVE-2014-6271, CVE-2014-7169, CVE-2014-7187, and CVE-2014-71861), which allows unauthorized users access to remote Unix/Linux-based systems.

Thecus Unaffected by Heartbleed

While Thecus NAS do make use of OpenSSL, the specific branches adopted by Thecus's software development team are in fact entirely unaffected by Heartbleed (as it only affects versions 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f). So when the news about Heartbleed broke, Thecus developers quickly established that Thecus devices were never vulnerable to malformed heartbeat requests.

Given the importance of confirming system vulnerability, a number of media outlets have reached out to Thecus support staff. In France, Stéphane Guérithault spoke to Next Inpact and confirmed that ThecusOS5 and OS6 were unaffected but that additional apps were being revised and updated by their respective developers so that Heartbleed fixes would be swiftly implemented.
