Microphone Performance

The boom microphone of the Corsair Void Pro RGB USB was tested by connecting it to the Asus ROG STRIX X99 Gaming motherboard.

To review the microphone's sound for a comparison to other, similar headsets, I used the Adam A7X speakers and Shure SRH840 headphones, being studio monitors, connected to Audiolab's M-DAC, a high-quality digital-to-analog converter that functions as an external sound card when connected to a PC. Testing was done in Discord, TeamSpeak, Skype, and Audacity, and I also used Audacity to record sound from the microphones. The sound was recorded with microphone sensitivity set to 100% and was not post-processed or edited in any way.

For reference, this voice recording has been made with the Rode NT-USB, a high-quality studio microphone:

This is the sound recorded by using the omnidirectional microphone the Corsair Void Pro RGB USB is supplied with:

The microphone quality is decent at best. I had no trouble using it in Discord, TeamSpeak and Skype - my teammates said I was a tad quiet, but fully understandable - but I wouldn't dare use this microphone for serious streaming, voiceovers or anything else of that sort. My voice sounds like I'm talking from inside of a barrel, or like the microphone was placed too far away from my mouth. I assure you, neither was the case. The microphone's performance is completely different from that of its wireless version, the Corsair Void Pro RGB Wireless. However, both of them are equally underwhelming. Take a listen and feel free to compare:

The competition offers headsets with better microphones, and there's no going around that. These are the microphone samples of two other USB gaming headsets you might be considering along with the Corsair Void Pro RGB USB:

If you don't mind going analogue, you can get better microphones from those excellent headsets as well, with some of them costing less than the $80 Corsair Void Pro RGB USB:

In short, if there's a single aspect Corsair needs to work on before releasing the successor to the entire Void Pro lineup, it's the microphone.
