Value and Conclusion

  • The DeepCool KG722 is a recently released keyboard that sells for ~$76–80 from vendors, including the DeepCool Amazon store and Walmart in the USA, as this is written.
  • Decent feature set for the money
  • Smaller form factor for improved ergonomics and space savings
  • Rarely seen front-facing legends on keycaps
  • Plenty of pre-programmed controls and shortcuts
  • Software drivers for key mapping, macro assignment, and LED control
  • Per-key 16.8 M RGB lighting with multiple effects and customization options
  • Multiple layouts and languages supported
  • Single switch option for now
  • Thin ABS keycaps feel cheap and will develop a shine over time
  • Competing with keyboards that offer more features for the price
  • Form factor can be a steep entry barrier to many
The DeepCool KG722 feels like a keyboard that was frozen in 2019/20 and thawed a few years later, only for the company to realize the ~$120ish it could have netted back then is not applicable anymore. At ~$75–80, there is certainly a market for the keyboard given it supports several different languages and layouts. This alone makes it a strong consideration over the various other Asian-brand keyboards that only come in the US ANSI layout even if they give you more for the money, including hot-swappable switches and more switch options. The use of thin ABS keycaps is also something I am calling out given how rare it has become among both smaller brands that have used PBT or thicker ABS keycaps for a while now and most mainstream companies.

The KG722 isn't a novel keyboard in itself, with the OEM seemingly having been identified before. As such, there isn't much DeepCool can do beyond what it is already doing. I am also not completely sure how many of the noted languages and layouts are actually available right now as the paperwork also mentions different switches which do not seem to be options right now. The feature set is otherwise more than satisfactory, and one thing over smaller brands is the more polished software experience I enjoyed here. The front-facing legends are also a neat touch and get around the laser-etched legends that would have worn out had they been on the top as per usual. This is a keyboard that offers enough to interest many, but not enough to merit a general recommendation from me.
