Razer Megalodon USB Headset Review

Closer Examination

The Megalodon headset looks pretty cool. Held entirely in black (beside the blue LEDs) this headset is definitely one of the prettier on the market today aimed at gamers.

Cup size is always important! The Razer Megalodon cups are quite big and will engulf your ears. The circumaural design is a nice change compared to the supra-aural Piranha headset. Add the fact that the clamping force of the Megalodon is much lower, which means that it is really comfortable to wear even for an extended period of time.

The headband is well padded and is generally very pleasant in use because it is covered with a normal fabric rather than fake leather.

One of the things that impressed me quite a bit with the Megalodon was how well the control unit works and how much functionality they have crammed into that little unit.

All through my tests I was quite impressed with just how well the control unit works. The way you adjust each of the settings right from microphone to bass and volume is really intuitive once you spend a few minutes playing with the unit.

Microphone wise the Megalodon is very well equipped. The microphone filters out unwanted noise nicely and is generally quite clear to listen too.

The cable entry has a small rubber stress relief which seems quite effective.

To stop the plastic encased USB sound card from sliding around on your desk Razer has made it with a relatively large rubber base.

The Megalodon's size adjusters are big and allow them to accommodate any size of head.

The Maelstrom “sound engine” in all its dirty glory. The shiny plastic is only shiny when you pull it out of the box after a day of use the unit will look a bit more messed up. Fingerprints and dust are the culprits here.
