Sivga Luan Open-Back, Over-Ear Headphones Review

Introduction

Sivga Audio Logo

Sivga Audio debuted on TechPowerUp with the Robin (SV021), a pair of closed-back headphones with decent value for money if you're in the market for a V-shaped tuning. We then covered two open-back sets from the brand in the form of the Sivga Phoenix that uses the same driver as in the Robin, and the more-expensive SV023, both of which offer a warmer tuning without compromising on detail. The newer Oriole was effectively an upgrade to the Robin and used a new driver, which in itself is not surprising since Sivga is one of very few headphone brands that makes its own drivers in addition to working with craftsmen for wooden ear cups that look quite the part. Given that the Oriole was effectively a new series of headphones from Sivga in the order I was reviewing them, I suppose I should not have been surprised when the company reached out to me about a new product that was seemingly taking over where the impressive Phoenix stopped.

Today we are examining the all-new Sivga Luan. It is an open-back set of over-ear headphones that the company is marketing with a brand new 50 mm dynamic driver that I have not seen used before. In addition, Sivga is prioritizing comfort more than before with oversized ear pads combined with its premium headband that worked very well with the likes of the Phoenix and SV023 before. I was also happy to see them finally move away from 2.5 mm cable connectors to the more common 3.5 mm size, thus increasing cable compatibility significantly. The Luan comes in two color options as with most Sivga products and the thumbnail of this review is for the black version that arguably looks cleaner. But I wanted to see how the flashier brown color version looks like and so here we are. Thanks to Sivga for providing a review sample to TechPowerUp as we begin our coverage with a look at the product specifications in the table below.

Packaging and Accessories

I am familiar with the unboxing experience of Sivga headphones at this point. The more affordable closed back sets—Robin and Oriole, for example—come in smaller boxes without a carry case and a larger carry pouch instead. The more premium headphones, of which the Luan can be considered as one, include a case and thus the product box is larger. It is made of thick cardboard with a plastic seal all around it and is predominantly black in color. On the front is the Sivga logo and the product name along with a large, simplistic render of the headphones from the side to allow the use of the same packaging for both headphone color options. More of this clean and minimalist packaging continues on the back, with the monochrome design allowing for product specifications, contact information, certification labels, and a marketing tagline. Sivga is using a two-piece packaging with the lid lifting off the box from the sides and we see a foam insert on the inner lining of the lid in addition to more foam all around the expected case.

Based on my experience, the color of the case is likely to match the headphones chosen. As such, I have the brown color version of this carry/storage case which is the same design as what we saw before with the Phoenix and SV023. It's formed from molded EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) hard case, with some give to help absorb bumps and falls. A suede leather texture has been applied to the exterior, and the Sivga logo is embossed into the front. The zipper is sturdy, and there is even a loop-hole for a carabiner should you wish to clip the case to your bag. Four plastic feet on the bottom allow for it to be stood upright; and this continues to be a highly functional case I am happy with.

A soft velvet lining inside the case protects the headphones further, which are placed front and center, with the ear cups facing outward and towards the bottom, explaining the rather curved nature of the case. The only other thing inside is a soft white hemp pouch with the Sivga logo in black on the front. Drawstrings are used to close it with the headphone cable inside, and it is stitched neatly. Besides the headphone cable we also get a 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm (1/4") adapter in a separate plastic zip-lock bag.
