The Synology DS212j is a NAS server which addresses budget oriented users or small offices, that don't need four-bays or even larger NAS boxes, and can live without RAID 5, 6 or 10 arrays. It may not have hot-swap disks, USB 3.0 support or an eSATA port but it has most of the functionality and features of more expensive Synology NAS servers thanks to the DSM operating system it runs. Thanks to its small footprint it doesn't draw a lot of attention and its power consumption is very low, so is output noise.
On top of that, during all tests I conducted I didn't notice sluggish behavior in the administrative interface even though CPU utilization was significant. The only thing that troubled me was the high CPU usage during USB 2.0 transfers in conjunction with the low speeds. In my opinion an eSATA port should be provided, to avoid the trouble with the USB 2.0 ports and provide higher throughput if you want to move a lot of data to an external storage device.
Nevertheless at such a good price I can't ask for many things, that's for sure, and the fact that the DS212j achieved by far the best price/performance ratio among all NAS servers I have tested so far speaks for itself.

All in all the DS212j is a very good choice for all who want to enter the NAS world and explore the numerous capabilities that these marvelous devices have to offer. It has a low price, many features, consumes only a few Watts and will fully cover the needs of most consumers.
