NVIDIA Ships Over 75% of Discrete GPUs in Q2-2015

Mercury Research published its market analysis for PC Graphics, for the second quarter of 2015 (April-June), this is an important quarter as this is when people tend to buy or upgrade their PCs for the summer break. According to the numbers posted by Mercury Research, NVIDIA hit a new record in discrete GPU market share. In the assessment period, 76.4 percent of desktop discrete GPUs were NVIDIA, up from 63.8 percent in Q2-2014. AMD, the only other desktop discrete GPU maker, saw its share drop to 23.6 percent.

The mobile discrete GPU figures were slightly better for AMD, with the company making up 34.6 percent, slightly up from 33.2 percent in Q2-2014. NVIDIA slipped proportionately down to 65.4 percent, from 66.8 percent in Q2-2014. When being a "discrete" GPU is no longer a criteria, and Intel is added to the mix, i.e. every CPU with graphics Intel sold, and every APU AMD sold (including the ones it sold to Microsoft and Sony), NVIDIA makes up 15.7 percent, AMD 14 percent, and Intel a whopping 70.1 percent. The big-picture isn't looking good. PC graphics shipments declined by 8 percent over the quarter, and down 21 percent from the same time last year. This is the worst on-year decline since the 2008 Financial Crisis.

..This is what happens when you keep feeding consumers re branded cards and any genuinely new cards only deliver marginal increases in performance over the previous generation and come with a $50-$100 price rise.

If you want more sales...give us decent performance jumps once more.

Or these numbers are skewed because Intel supplies 99% of the graphics chips for tablets and small laptops giving them a massive market they own without questions.

I think the numbers will continue to decrease as the graphics chip in cpu's for both camps continue to improve. The low -end market for discrete GPU's has been effectively wiped out. I foresee the mid-level market joining the Dodo within 10 years if Intel and AMD graphics continue to improve.

Must be that time of year when PC gets dying again, because old graphics cards are still good enough for most people ... also, I wonder if Intel counts all their IGPs on all CPUs into the percentage although most users are not using them.

That would probably not affect these numbers that much. Enthusiasts are such a tiny demographic.

lolwat? Most users don't use them?

Most people have laptops, and 99% of laptops use the IGP. only gaming and professional laptops don't and that is a EXTREMELY small percentage. Most laptops out there have an intel chip inside them. Even then, gaming laptops DO use them for non-gaming purposes, unless you have one of the two laptops out there without optimus. same with professional laptops. Similar story with desktops, although there are more with low end dedicated cards, most non gaming, non professional computers also use the IGP.

Gaming computers make up a tiny percentage of desktops, and even fewer laptops, so, how do most users NOT use the IGP?

Yeah, dying, dying, beaten to death (brink biggga hammarr! like Orks say) and still standing firm.

With IGP that's highly debatable "most users not using them". In general enthusiast segment is not about IGP. Internal VGA is used only to troubleshoot problems. But whole OEM segment is only about IGP, which is gigantic chunk of PC sales as a whole. And of course mobile market where dedicated VGAs are not that widely used.

Also it's a godsend for times when discrete GPU is sent for RMA

At least im helping AMD, since i got me Fury X. I would have gotten me 4 of them, but 4gb of Video ram stopped me for pulling the plug on that.
Im waiting with it as it is, see, what the dual GPU is all about, but if they were to make something with 8 GB of HBM, i would have gotten me 4 GPUs, either 4 cards or 2 dal cards.
Since i planned my GPU watercooling loop to take care of 4 GPUs, this is what ill do in the end, bt getting now GPUs with 4GB Video ram is just not future proof, as taking apart the cards for pgrade is going to be a pian in the ass. So im waiting for something with more RAM.

The Intel iGPU is getting pretty good. Since I don't game anymore and GPU rendering has been pretty buggy except for Nvidia Iray, I might just ditch GPU for my next build. The iGPU should be good enough to play most of indie cloud-funded games.

Intel of course counts their market share even when people buy i7 6700k and never ever use the iGPU...

I really think its quite stupid to mix Graphic cards with CPU, because having a CPU isn't an option. Even if you have a graphics card you must have a CPU on the PC....
