Ikea Has Created Fake PS5 & Xbox Series X Consoles to Help with Sizing

Ikea has created some new PS5 and Xbox Series X shaped enclosures to help customers find suitable Ikea products to house them. These placeholder game console boxes come with some clever comments including; "Which IKEA media storage unit will be able to fit my new, meme-ishly oversized, game console?" on the PS5. These fake consoles include dimensions that help when looking for suitable media cabinets to store the consoles. This is a clever move from Ikea as many people will be looking for a complete media center upgrade along with their new console. This smart marketing strategy has been well received by customers who have been posting about it online.

This feels like it is one of those things that most companies wouldn't bother doing, but when someone actually does it, it makes so much sense to do it.

Interesting text on the boxes. "pretty much 6"" and "basically 12"" and the PS5, erm, box, actually says it's a "meme-ishly oversized gaming console". I wonder if someone at Ikea isn't a fan of video games, or the imperial measurement system (well, can't really blame them for the last one).

Not gonna lie, I would do that too with the imperial measurement system if I had to put those measures but were granted some liberty for it lol

Though I definitely wouldn't ever come up with that "meme-ishly oversized gaming console" joke. I'm not that creative

Sweden doesn't do design quite the same way the rest of the world goes for it. The "design thinking" attempt to copy their aproach is close, but not quite there. Pretty remarkable.

Fake consoles? Uhm, that's such a click-bait headline. They're clearly just mockups so people can see if the new consoles will fit with the furniture they want.
IKEA has had mockup TVs and even books for years, although these days they seem to have actual books, all of them Swedish of course...

I recall being 12 and seeing those plastic TV's at IKEA in mini living rooms and all. If a company thinks 'wow this is new' they've been asleep at the wheel! :D

Or we can just call them dummies:rolleyes:
Electronics manufacturers use them all the time when setting up assembly lines to see how well all the components fit together. It avoids wasting expensive parts or having to wait for the components to be made. I don't recall people calling them fake components lol

How long before people start putting real console electronics in Ikea boxes? (and reuse the remaining shells as breadboxes?)

The size difference between the XBOX and playstation! First time i've seen them side by side. The ps5 does not need to be that big then as the xbox is packing more power and is smaller.
