NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition PCB Pictured, Revealing AD103 Silicon

Here's the first picture of the PCB of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition. With NVIDIA cancelling the AD104-based GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, the significantly buffed, AD103-based RTX 4080 16 GB is now referred to as simply the RTX 4080. The picture reveals an asymmetric PCB shape to fit with the Founders Edition dual-axial flow-through design. The card pulls power from a 16-pin ATX 12VHPWR connector, and appears to use roughly a 16-phase VRM. The PCB has many blank VRM phase traces, although just eight memory-chip pads to go with the 256-bit wide GDDR6X memory interface of the AD103 silicon.

The AD103 silicon features a rectangular die, and a fiberglass substrate that looks about the same size as past-generation NVIDIA GPUs with 256-bit wide memory interfaces, such as the GA104. The AD103 GPU is probably pin-compatible with the smaller AD104, at least as far as substrate-size is concerned; so minimal PCB design R&D effort is put into designing the 12 GB and 16 GB variants of the RTX 4080. The RTX 4080 12 GB is now gone, and the AD104 will power --70 classs SKUs with fewer shaders than what would've been the RTX 4080 12 GB. The display output configuration remains the same as the RTX 4090, with three DisplayPort 1.4a, and an HDMI 2.1a. NVIDIA is expected to launch the GeForce RTX 4080 on November 16, priced at USD $1,199 (MSRP).

4070 was going to be AD103 based up until quite recently and then they dumped it for AD104, probably cock sure they would thrash AMD and didn't even need to try.

Given the sheep reaction to the 4090, nVidia is right to do so, people especially some of the so called reviewers are just blind and seem to be amnesiac.

No wonder that thing is so expensive. Doesn't Nvidia start using chiplet based designs with 5000? Something tells me they will use it as an excuse to make them even more expensive. Performance at great price is about as impressive as a quarter million dollar car breaking 200mph.

They got "Brand Loyalty" on their side. ;) Even if it's way slower than a 7900XTX for 400 bucks more, they will still happily throw their money at them.
Hxxall these 4080s will be OOS in 5 minutes on launch day. plenty of gamers with more money than sense out there
If rumours are true, there won't be many 4080's on release anyways. :) They are still sitting on tons of 30xx cards, so they have to limit 40xx drops.

Nvidia told several times that these cards now aren't a full release of Ada, just a couple of cards (was 3, now down to 2) on top of Ampere architecture, which remains current one until the real release of Ada architecture next year.

And they are pricing them as RTX 3090 SUPER Ti and RTX 3095 SUPER DUPER Ti!

In Europe at least prices of high end Ampere cards are going back up. There were some deals on 3090 Ti for about 1100 EUR, now the cheapest is 1300 EUR, and regular 3090 also went from about 950 to 1150 - 1200 EUR.

So there's still plenty of space now that 4080 12 GB was "unlaunched" - RTX 4090 are going for 2000 EUR, RTX 4080 16 GB might as well be priced 1600 - 1800 EUR, and they can then increase the price of 3090 and 3090 Ti for another 200, 300 EUR...

There's tonns of people who gave RTX 20 (Turing) series a miss since it didn't bring any price / performance increase over GTX 10 (Pascal), and then they couldn't get a RTX 30 (Ampere) cards because of the cryptoidiotism.

And are now probably wondering if they should buy a two year Ampere card for a launch MSRP, or wait for a full RTX 40 (Ada) release and pay even more money for the same performance...

So true, and I've got a feeling that the RX 7900s won't do a dent on this pricing scheme...
The MSRP is good but I believe it only applies for reference designs. AIBs custom designs will be priced as close to Nvidia as possible, and then there's the common issues with not enough stock at launch and scalping.

Yeah, Nvidia controls the GPU market prices, since AMD always has a limited availability. All that low MSRP of AMD cards would achieve is that partners will sell them directly to scalpers and split the profit. There are now plenty of backdoor channels established since last couple of cryptolunacies.

When looking at Nvidia's 30xx pricing, it doesn't look like they try to get rid of them. :laugh: And looking at the top 10 charts over at heise.de they only sell (overpriced) 4090's and one 3080.
AMD's pricing on the other hand, now very competitive. It's really a no brainer atm.

There is no way in hell I'm buying that shitty gen called Ampere. The node is shit, the tech is pointless and Nvidia has been scoring fat minus points ever since Turing in my book.

The most attractive offer rn is the dropping in price RDNA2 top end. Good node, good perf/w and end perf. I'll likely give 40 series a miss just for the sheer arrogance of it. AD103 already looks so handicapped I can't even begin to care about it.

Nah, lots of GPU buyers see lack of DLSS (and don't care that AMD has it's own upscaling technology), and they see AMD is slower in raytracing - although they are buying midrange and don't play the games with raytracing turned on.

And they look at the fastest card and see thay Nvidia is faster - although that might not be true in the price range they are buying.

Obviously. The gap between the 4080 and 4090 is quite substantial. This means NV wants to shift the focus from midrange cards to those lower high end thus the ridiculous price of the 4080 $1200 and the 3080 12gb recently removed from release to bump the pricing. Of course there is plenty of space to sell cards like 4080 ti and/or super for astronomical prices. Also, justify the price for the 4090 as well. the 3090 ti with MSRP $1500 if I'm correct makes the 4080 $1200 look like a steal with average 10% performance boost. The problem is, Ampere prices where ridiculous at most and now NV wants to kick those to the roof even more. Can't blame them though but for people buying this bullshit and those things saying perf per $ is ok are simply insane and detached from reality. That is my opinion though about the high prices.
AMDs $1k price is high as well but with what NV is showing, it does look like a steal if the performance for the 7900xtx is fairly good.
