Funny thing is, nearly exactly a year ago both Gigabyte and MSI posted about these kinds of boards. It's not exactly IP thievery as its just stealing good ideas (and both brands motherboards are inherently different in terms of layout).

Gigabyte was thrown under the bus for infringing on Maingear patent(which was later on resolved with Project Stealth) there are also boards from Asus under TUF line doing the same thing and neither MSI nor Asus have made any joint statement with Maingear nor Maingear themselves have spoken about it(who were quite vocal during Gigabyte case).

Now if msi would put as much attention to detail in their AMD based cards as they do nv cards (heatsink design mounting being different and how it interfaces with the die, ram and vrms) I could maybe suggest them, same goes for Asus and Gigabyte as well...

That might be who sits on the US patent, but the first company to do this was Korean TriGem in 2005. They launched the Kloss mini PC back then, that had several connectors, including power and IDE on the bottom of the motherboard.

Sadly the images are gone from my original review, which was the first review outside of Korea www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/trigem-kloss-kl-i915a

This site still have pictures up that shows the motherboard with the connectors on the bottom.

Tried googling that part number and old Tomshardware and Hexus review showed up. From the photos it seems like that product only had power connector moved to bottom while drive and front panel connectors were parallel on front side of board. Maingear might have gotten patent for moving all the connections to opposite of CPU socket in order to improve aesthetics and management.
I remember article from Hothardware which was used to throw shade at Gigabyte by quite a lot of tech media and enthusiasts with big exception being the CEO of Maingear. Since then Asus showed off DIY-APE which might not gotten anywhere but they did launch B760M-BTF board in retail. Tech media and enthusiasts who were vocal with Gigabyte saga were all silent during DIY-APE and now MSI announcments (also since there are no Maingear systems with BTF board means its done fully independently). In last couple of days Shitsus with their CPU burning saga proved they are more than happy to leverage their sponsership(similar to how MSI, LG and few others have also done used similar tactics to leverage money for positive coverage) for positive coverage from media.

Still prior art as far as patents are concerned, so in reality, no-one should be able to patent this or call it their IP.

Both US patent and trademark system are broken beyond repair and there is little incentive to fix that system.
