Yup its why I killed Windows update totally.
Little to do with Windows Update, more to do with a silly 11 default.

Thankfully you can decrypt it fairly easy.

@lexluthermiester, do you know Win11 changed how display-switch arguments work (C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe ARG), it's not possible to add argument to tell external/internal/... anymore, so we have to manually click one of the poping-up option, that's bad.
I've never had to use command line switches with that EXE before, so for me, this is not a loss. Your comment makes me wonder how many people actually do...

Yup its why I killed Windows update totally.
Right there with you. I have been killing Windows Auto-Update since the XP days. The benefits just can not out-weigh the hassles that happen on a regular basis...

No, update has a habit of screwing things up and has been doing this for decades. It's nothing new to Windows 11.

i have all services active because i didn't try hard enough to find the service(s) that makes the screen blinking,
Sorry, think I missed this. By "Blinking", what exactly is Windows or your display doing?

W98-W7 werent bad at all, since hearing of barbaric ms methods used in 10 and 11, I completely killed it so powershell is the only way to install updates.

Sure... but follow the quote trail, the discussion was talking about bitlocker encryption defaults. That's where I got thrown.

Windows 9X did not have Windows Update.
Sure it did. But it was a thing you manually checked, and had to install an activeX plugin to even use.

I remember because I was probably one of the few users, lol.

Automatic Updates started with XP in the consumer space and it was a constant source of unpleasantness and headache. The recent microsoft shenanigans are only an extension of that.
Meh. Only really became an issue when it became both forced automatic AND they fired their Q&A team. Seriously was a bad recipe, that.

you guys are discussing kind of the same thing that brought me here. It sucks that 10 only lets you delay upgrades for 35 days (at least on my version, Pro). I really liked more time for reasons. How is it on W11?

Vaguely remember that. Wasn't a default thing from microsoft back then.

Fair enough. Don't remember anyone who used it. Only saw it once at a conference in Vegas. It was interesting.

While I agree that the latest combination of actions made things much worse, it's always been a problem in one way or another.

How is it on W11?
The same. Like Windows 10, you just have to disable the update services to prevent problems & annoyances.

@lexluthermiester

i'm French, blink bc i thinked to blinking of eyes...

So :
disabling this service (netprofm), makes the screen have 1 frame black (it doesn't displays anything, black screen) then 1 frame displaying screen (i say 1 frame but i can't count frames)...
Also, it loads longtime at login, and as screen blinks it's hard to use double click, or select a thing makes it to be unselected at next blink (more than 1 by sec). It's unusable.

Anyway i could (always) use CTRL+ALT+SUP then CTRL+Click on login's reboot button to choose "emergency" to be able to "safeboot" at next reboot :p
In safemode re-enable this service fixes all problems.

Yes, like i noted in my previous post when i found about, i tried to disable this one only and reenable fixes it, yes.

From 1.0 to 11 in images :

At first sight, biggest evolution is from v2 to v3 !!

This just happened to me yesterday. My laptop went through an automatic update but restarted with a black screen followed by a blue screen of death. I booted up in safe mode, opened up the Nvidia control panel, and found out that my driver version had been modified to 527.21 for no reason even though I already had a much newer version (532.03) installed. I then went to Check for updates and found this:
Screenshot 2023-06-21 023827.png

Windows update was trying to replace my Nvidia driver components with an older version without permission and bugged itself out during the process which resulted in my laptop crashing and BSOD. I had to go through a whole DDU process in safe mode just to set everything back to normal once again. Does this happen to anyone before?

Yup common issue, lean how to disable windows update completely, which includes auto download of drivers and use powershell only to install necessary windows updates, you can find this in articles and on youtube

Yes, I want to permanently disable Windows updates. I tried using the service.msc but no use since the Windows update service will just re-enable itself after a while. I don't have Group Policy in my Windows 11 Home so I used the registry trick from this guide but not sure if this will work or not.

This is so frustrating. My previous MSI laptop running on Windows 10 never tried to mess around with my Nvidia driver but this happened to me on Windows 11.

This is why you disable automatic driver updates.

There is an easy to use utility will help you do that.

This is an excellent utility and very useful for roping in many of Windows 11's more annoying aspects.

Has microsoft again introduced a way to circumvent the disabling of automatic driver updates?
Because I had it set via GPE and I also got a nvidia driver update.
This is on a W10 machine 22H2 , but i think W11 might use the same mechanism.

Apparently in advanced system settings -> hardware -> device installation settings
there is an option for automatic download of manufacturer Apps and Icons.

I did not had it set because it does not mention driver updates.
I guess drivers are now considered apps :kookoo:

Also , I don't know if the 22H2 update itself reverts some of the user settings back to default ones?

Chris titus tech has videos on it on youtube. I looked for several guides to kill it and it worked. It wasnt till i looked at event viewer to see that ms edge was checking for updates on startup, found a task scheduler entry and disabled it. I dont use edge and despise it, I liked Internet Explorer back then but edge is too intrusive. I switched to firefox in the XP days, but man I really miss the customizations Firefox 3.0 had.
