Nice! I love kernel 6.x as is. Anything after 6.5 has fantastic hardware support for even newer tech.

I'm sure other editions should release soon after they re-spin

Here is a blog post cononical made regarding the release:

One impressive thing I've found is how Linux 6.5+ and Proton can outperform Windows 11 in games. Who'd a thought?

It is pretty crazy; Ubuntu (and flavors) also this release (along with a few other distros) bumped up the max_map_count which should help memory hungry games and apps a ton.

Its already worked for big games like hogwarts legacy, star citizen etc. But it also helps hungry apps, like DB services, elastisearch etc.

Late reply but it's because of the Vulkan translation layer, you can actually use DXVK on windows as well and games should run better.

Interesting. How does one use this for Steam content that goes with Proton? I have a couple games that won't work on Proton so I have to go to Windows for those.

I had to go back to Linux Mint, Mint allows me to right click and uninstall games in steam, super easy and familiar.

Ubuntu I right click a game in my steam library and nothing happens. I still can't figure out how to uninstall a game in Ubuntu. Maybe my installation got messed up, I don't know.

You just download the latest archive and it should have a bunch of DLLs for DX9, 10, 11 and I think there is a different DXVK version for DX12 and then you replace these DLLs with the ones that are in the game folder, usually where the executable is and that's it, when the game boots it should use DXVK. It shouldn't trigger any kind of integrity check.

But it's possible that if these didn't work with Proton then DXVK might not work either for them on Windows, I don't know.

there is no uninstall option located anywhere for me on the newest Ubuntu. my install must have got corrupted or I'm just not understanding something.

hopefully Linux Mint Edge gets the latest updates soon, I prefer the Cinnamon layout anyway

All our new server installs for the last 6 months are Ubuntu, used to be CentOS in the past. Very happy with it so far

Does anyone have experience whether it's worth waiting a few weeks, or possibly for 24.04.1 before running production loads?

I mean, if you uninstall the game from Steam itself. I might also remove it from the app tray.

I have an R server at work which is running on an older version of CentOS. I just today began migrating its workload to a new Ubuntu 24.04 server in my test environment. So far so good, but I need to do more testing before I can confidently put it in production.

I’ve deployed a couple of Ubuntu servers in the past prior to their first “point release” without any issue, but none of my servers have been super critical either. Maybe if you were especially cautious you could wait, but I’d just install the current version in a test environment and see how it goes with your software stack.

We switched during the whole alama, rocky, stream thing 2 years ago. I ran prod workloads after like a week of testing and it was absolutely fine. Personally my production workloads have always been on Ubuntu; the biggest being my front end nginx servers and those have cruised alone with no issues. This latest upgrade was no different.

Can someone please download a steam game on the latest Ubuntu here and take a screenshot of where the "uninstall" option is located for that specific game, I right click the game and nothing happens, I look in store page I see no uninstall option, I am in library I look to right in community area, on Windows uninstall can be found in a few places, but I am not seeing it anywhere here.

Any advice welcome, it's possible my install was corrupted, I don't know, I thought it would be easier to uninstall a steam game than this...

I think you go under settings, storage, and from there you should be able to see uninstall options. If you use more than one drive for Steam, just change that in the drop down.

I don't have a current Ubuntu install, but can you do it from the game page? Click the gear, choose Manage, and then Uninstall?

ok thanks, I am an idiot. I knew it wouldn't be as easy as Windows, but still I should have thought of that, thanks

It should work exactly the same as the Windows client. When you right-click the game title in your Library list, no menu appears at all?

All our new server installs for the last 6 months are Ubuntu, used to be CentOS in the past. Very happy with it so far

According to benchmarks that Phoronix has done in the past, Fedora was the fastest for NginX (and probably openresty as well):
100 concurrent requensts: https://openbenchmarking.org/embed.php?i=2110089-TJ-2110082TJ12&sha=ce0bf7794800&p=2
200 concurrent requensts: https://openbenchmarking.org/embed.php?i=2110089-TJ-2110082TJ12&sha=702f7ec74355&p=2
1000 concurrent requensts: https://openbenchmarking.org/embed.php?i=2110089-TJ-2110082TJ12&sha=f25b746b91aa&p=2

openSUSE Tumbleweed also does well in these results.

The impression I get when I look at the results is that Ubuntu is increasingly unable to keep up with the other systems as more requests go to the NginX server.

Does anyone have experience whether it's worth waiting a few weeks, or possibly for 24.04.1 before running production loads?

This is always recommended by many Ubuntu users.
If you read the reviews on Distrowatch for distributions other than Ubuntu, you often find that they had problems with the stability of Ubuntu LTS.
Many users experienced better stability with operating system X/Y/Z.
Especially if an Ubuntu LTS release is new, it is better to wait a few months so that you have less chance of bugs.

I love being able to choose between stable and testing/unstable on a per-package basis in Calculate Linux (Gentoo).
Very large organizations have used Gentoo for both client and server applications.

The other great thing about Gentoo is that you never have to upgrade to a new version.
The system doesn't degrade every day until you finally reinstall the next version of your chosen distro.

Edit: I posted NginX performance results of Ubuntu 20.04
I discovered that Ubuntu 22.04 compares better to other systems in this test:

All things considered, probably Clear Linux and openSUSE Tumbleweed give the best NginX/openresty performance.

I've used Manjaro before--what's your take on it?

It does many things well and better than other options, but it misses the most important things for me. I try Manjaro, but I can never keep it working. It claims to be more stable than Arch, but if I combine Arch with a window manager (Xmonad/bspwm/dwm/fluxbox) or LXQt/XFCE I can keep Arch running well for many years. While I have tried Manjaro many times and always come up with insoluble problems.

FreeOffice wasn't optimal either, and I'd rather pre-install OnlyOffice or LibreOffice. LibreOffice can do a lot more things (more features).
The only plus of FreeOffice is that the interface is a clone of MS Office.

Calculate Linux is perhaps slightly more technical than Manjaro and the package manager is not super fast but still OK and with very nice features.
But I can keep Calculate Linux running stably for many years, or at least that's the impression I have now.
