€500 upgrade

I bought RTX 4070 recently and I see my i5 8600K is bottlenecking it in some games. It is overclocked, but still. I have €500 to spend on upgrade. This includes new CPU, MBO, RAM(if I have to switch to DDR5) and cooler. Currently I have some Corsair watercooler which doesn't fit on AMD sockets. SO if I can't fit it, new cooler is needed as well. What would be best in this budget?

That's tough. Hard to justify going AM4 this late in the game, but for the budget a 5800x3d on a b550/x570 board would get you the best results right now. Going AM5 won't get you as much right now, but give a great upgrade path for longevity of the system.

Tough call to make. If going Intel, stick with the 13th gen...14th gen isn't worth the price premium in my opinion.

Or even the 12th if the OP lives in the world of cheap aftermarket twelvers. They ask $300 for 12900K where I live. Hard to say what games won't be happy to run on this CPU.

You might be able to get an intel 12th gen cpu either heavily discounted, or 2nd hand for cheaps - that would be my best bet.

This is definitely not a bad idea either. If OP wants to hold out for a larger budget, I would even try to find a used 9900k for cheap just to drop in for the time being. It would give some breathing room for the 4070 over the 8600k, and should just drop right in with a BIOS update.

I gotta say, this looks like a great upgrade! It'll hold OP over for a few years until DDR5 matures and gets cheaper for a complete platform upgrade.

OP has some really tough choices, as the budget is right in the range to open up tons of different configurations with varying degrees of pros and cons.

Well that sucks. I honestly didn't know that...I thought all their LGA115x coolers were upgradable with the little $15 kit. Not too shocked though... corporations and planned obsolescence being what it is.

I was pretty convinced in the advice I gave OP earlier, but the more people post the more I'm torn on what I'd do. I can't wait to see what they decide on though.

This is the cooler I have. And I have no idea which model is it. If it didn't say so on it, I wouldn't even know it's a corsair.

It's one of the old square ones - not upgradable to fit lga1700 - so you will need a new cooler no matter what

Are you able to explain how a $30 cooler like https://www.techpowerup.com/review/deepcool-ak400-cpu-cooler/10.html can easily cool 150 W +, but you assert that it wouldn't be able to cool a 14600K, which averages around 90 W, and peaks at 170?
