I am concerned that my Core 2 Quad will not support Windows 11

Anyone know if Rufus gets around the SSE4.2 issue with Windows 11 24H2? (yes, I looked at the Rufus FAQ)

That's not possible without recompiling Windows. Either use an older version of 11, use 10, or upgrade your system.

I don't think so. It's said that Windows needs some assembler OP codes that are introduced in SSE4.2. SSE4.2 is a part of the CPU-Microcode. There only an exchange of the CPU would help.

24H2 won’t be an update like 23H2 was, it’ll be a complete rebase from what MS said. As such, I believe posters above are correct and the OS would be recompiled with flags necessitating SSE4.2. As such, there won’t be workarounds this time. I am afraid that your Core 2 Quads time has finally come to an end if you wish to continue running latest Windows builds. I mean, it IS a CPU that’s more than 15 years old at this point. Expecting support or even functionality is unreasonable.

Agree. I'd say that a 1st gen Core platform is the absolute minimum for even basic computing these days, Core2 was good but when thinking that 1st gen Core is already over 15 years old, that's a cruel reality.

if your cpu doesn't support SSE4.2 you have more serious problems we are talking AMD K10 and Nehalem Core-i and up
seriously way past time to upgrade your box if you don't check either of those platform boxes

The new benchmark for instruction set support is Haswell IMO. Ivy Bridge as an absolute minimum. So 4th gen Core really.

I built up a LGA771 Xeon Quad in a Gigabyte EP45 board+RX580, for a garage PC a couple years back.

I was genuinely surprised just how much slower it was than even a Ivy Bridge i5.

Still, I'm with OP on wanting to 'self-support' legacy systems.
In this case though, they're gonna have to 'deal with it'.

An older Win11 build in an LTSC flavor might work for 'em. Otherwise, look at rolling back to a Win10 variant or Linux(+proton and friends)

The OP already has DDR3 memory, which can be carried over to any newer system up to a Haswell i7. I don't know about motherboards but at least non-K processors should be cheap these days.

Edit: now I see the issue, the mobo is not standard size. Assuming of course that he wants to keep as many old parts as possible.

Agreed. You don't need the absolute newest to be in 'current support'.
NtM 6th gen Skylake was a decently big leap in performance over Haswell-Broadwell prior. Generally, I consider the 1st two generations of Ryzen 'in the same performance class' as Skylake.

Kinda-sorta on topic:
The 3300X quad AM4 is quite a unique performer (if OP is more interested in their builds for reasons beyond mere performance)
Sadly because of that, they're kinda hard to find and hold a premium.

What's the memory voltage? 1.35V rated DDR3 should do well in a Z170 or similar with a used Skylake.

TBQH though, an AM4 combo would probably be the highest value upgrade.
Depending on budget, a 5#00X3D, B550 board, and 16-32GB of RAM can be had CHEAP (cheaper than used sometimes)
-and would set OP squarely into 'modern performance' territory, for the near-foreseeable future.

Not sure it's worth building a new system based on DDR4. Definitely not worth investing money into a DDR3 platform just so the RAM can be reused.

Wait for Arrow Lake. It's a DDR5 only (not hybrid DDR4/5) platform that also introduces significant process/packaging technology leaps, backside power delivery, gate all around transistors, second gen Foveros. See what it's like. Then either go with that or buy one of the (now cheaper) older generations. The new 11 update isn't even out yet so there's no rush.

Sure, but if you are eventually replacing, not much sense going with old tech since you're likely to keep the new system for a long time too.

Skylake DDR3L boards were extremely rare - if they existed at all in retail.

Actually, in terms of ST performance Zen 1 is akin to Haswell (4th Gen), Zen 2 is comparable with Skylake (6th Gen), and Zen 3 is similar to Coffee Lake refresh (9th Gen). And since most OS tasks and home/office apps rely on a single thread, ST performance is largely responsible for the general "feel" of a system.

It sure is. On a par with an i3-12100 in most apps, and only a bit slower in games when oc'd. I'm still using one in my secondary rig, and it's not going anywhere

And on topic -- I love retro systems and have a couple of them. I regularly browse the web on an XP machine, and am typing this from a heavily underclocked 2012 system. In my experience, any dual core is capable of web browsing and could be used as a basic home/office PC. But all these are fun hobbyist projects and I wouldn't think of pairing them with Win10, not to mention 11.

For an everyday PC running current OS and software, I wouldn't go lower than a 4c/8t CPU with AVX2 support, i.e. i7-4770 or Ryzen 5 1400 at minimum.
