Could upgrade from ryzen 5700X to 5700X3D or 7600 paired with RX 6800 XT improve 1440p gaming?

I currently have the 5700X with 32gb 3200MHZ CL16 memory and 6800XT. I have estimated that I could upgrade to the 5700X3D for around 130€ by selling the 5700X or upgrade to the 7600 with new mobo and ram for around 200€ by selling the old. Could this upgrade increase performance significantly, especially the 1% lows in 1440p gaming? From my testing in AAA games such as Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk with 1440p high settings I seem to be 100% GPU bound and it wouldn't make much of difference even if I upgraded to the 7800X3D. But I play some PUBG also and have found that in some scenarios the performance drops to around 80-100 fps. It averages around 160FPS with 1440p high settings. Also know that PUBG is known to have significant fluctuations in FPS. CS2 is also on the menu sometimes but it rarely drops under 150FPS and I have 165hz monitor.

So, could there be much performance to be gained from updgrading with the 6800XT? Or are the 5700X and 6800XT just the perfect match for each other already?

There's also the side of upgrading the GPU. I think could get around 350-400€ from the 6800XT and 7900 GRE starts at 640€, 7900XT 860€ and 7900XTX from 1050€ where I live. Currently thinking of using max around 200€ for this hobby ugrade so the GPU upgrade is almost out of the question except for maybe the 7900 GRE in best case for 240€..

I wouldn't know about a comparison with the 5700X, but here are some results of mine in a comparison against the 5600X at 1440p (using a 7900XTX). If upgrading was a MUST I'd do it, as I don't see advantage in losing cores going the 7600 route. Heck, I don't think I'd be leaving AM4 until AM6, unless AMD does something absurd with whatever's on the AM5 roadmap.

Get a 5700/5800X3D and call it a day.
The 6800XT is decent gpu and you can keep it easily until Blackwell and RDNA4 are released.
Even then, if you decide to upgrade the gpu, the 5800X3D will be more than fine*.

*unless you go all in for a 5090.

Thanks for the comparison. I actually looked at that thread before. The results are intriguing and in favor for the 5700X3D but that 7900XTX is quite a different gpu than my 6800XT

Yes, I know. The stronger the card the bigger the difference the X3D will make against the X or non-X.

And while I do still have a 3070 (which'd be actually a bit slower than your 6800XT), swapping it (and the 5600X) in for testing would be more effort than I'm willing to take.

I went from a 3600 to a 5800X3D. Other than regretting not just spending the $200 or so to go AM5 (it's whatever, hoping to hold out for AM6 now) it has been worthwhile. That said, also swapped an RTX 2080 for a 7900 XTX, so that's a lot of it, too.

(I mostly played at 1440p on the old machine and play almost exclusively at 4K with the new components, targeting 120fps as that's the highest refresh my displays support.)

Your 5700x is fast enough for the 6800XT it is not bottlenecking the GPU. I had a 6900XT with a 5600x3d and it was a non-issue. (Currently have a 7900XT and have bottlenecking issues at 1080p and some games at 1440p) I think the only improvement you will see is better 1% lows. ( in games that use the 3d vcache.) It could lower you frames in games that do not use the 3d vcache, because the clock speed is lower.

The frame rate drop is not a sign your CPU is holding you back, unless the GPU usage goes down with it. Just a random drop is not that big a deal, if its not stuttering.

If you planning ahead, and AMD is you path of choice, pick up the 7600, it benches the same as a 5800x3d in most games. For your next upgrade, you will already have the DDR5 memory and MB and can make your upgrade choice from there.

Neither. Keep your current rig. Save the money. In a few years buy an AM6 or LGA#### system (whatever wins, Intel vs. AMD...do not buy on corporate loyalty).

The 5600x, 5700x, and to an extent the 5800x3d are all basically not limiting factors as 1080p. There are some limiting factors at 1440p (assuming you want to turn everything on at high)...but not any significant ones. I would have a suggestion if you were running a 5700xt and 5700x...but that'd also largely be down to your GPU being a limiting factor.



As much as I hate to say this...PUBG and CS aren't exactly fantastic dipsticks. There are documented instance of 3080 GPUs having issues due to other settings (Tom's Issue)...so maybe instead of checking for expensive new hardware you should review your settings? It's a heck of a lot cheaper.

Don't do half measures.

Go for 7800X3D or don't bother.

6800XT isn't a particularly fast card so I would save more.

When RTX50xx releases good time for CPU upgrade as Zen 5 and Arrow Lake will be out.

It depends on how long you want to keep that rig going.
5700X is fine for a 6800XT, a 5800X3D is obviously better but I wouldn't say it's necessary unless you planned on another GPU upgrade as well.

I pulled the trigger and bought the 5700X3D. I first benchmarked SOTR with modest average fps boost from 160->166. But I then benchmarked PUBG and it didn't disappoint. 25 min benchmark using replay on Taego resulted in average FPS from 171->197 and 1%lows from 136->166. That's a nice 15% boost on averages and a 22% on 1%lows. Also average GPU busy went from 5.24ms->5.00 and average Frame Time from 6.20ms->5.23. So from 0.88 difference down to 0.23.
