End-of-Life Router Lists

A recent People’s Republic of China state sponsored Botnet attack on very popular SOHO routers is a reminder to all that our routers reach "End-of-Life" too. This is when the manufactures no longer provide technical support for these devices, and more importantly, they no longer provide critical security firmware patches for any newly discovered security vulnerabilities. This puts all users on these networks at risk of being compromised.

Note the advisory from the United States National Security Agency (NSA), the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), the Communications Security Establishment’s Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS), the New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-NZ), and the United Kingdom National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-UK) reported (my bold underline added),

The vast majority of routers that comprised the KV Botnet were Cisco and NetGear routers that were vulnerable because they had reached “end of life” status; that is, they were no longer supported through their manufacturer’s security patches or other software updates.

Below is a list "End-of-List" (EoL) products by popular router manufactures. I recommend everyone periodically check these lists to make sure your routers are not listed and are still being supported. If your router is listed, NOW is the time to replace it (assuming it is not too late).

Netgear
Synology
TP-Link

(I know these are just some of the router manufacturers world wide. Not all maintain such lists. If you find a link to a EoL list by a manufacturer not listed, please PM me with the link and I will add it. Thanks.)

This is not meant to be an all inclusive list for all possible network gear. It soon would become a situation where too much information clutters and obscures the primary objective.

Almost everyone with a home or small office network has a router. Very few users have a separate firewall device.

So please, lets keep it limited to routers and "residential gateway" devices - devices that integrate the router and modem into one device.

I wouldn't trust them with routers... that's a big nope

predator connect ..... a name like that the party van will come over lickety split

So - as a reference for others seeking information about EoL for their routers, lets keep it on topic, please. And feel free to start your own, new threads for those other topics.

@T-Cat - You are right. I cannot find any such list for Acer products either. The closest I got was this Acer Legacy Product Support page but it does not list those products it no longer supports. My "guess" is one would have to contact their Tech Support with a specific model number. Considering how big Acer is, and the number of products they have produced (but surely no longer support), I think it sad they don't maintain such a list for their customers to quickly reference.

Here's a list from Zyxel's "End of Life" devices:

And a link to a PDF with their achieved EOL models. At first glance it doesn't look like all devices are listed (found one missing on it).

They also note:
Zyxel has two concepts - EOL and EOS
EOL - End of Life (termination of supply of a product from the factory and calculation of the duration of the lifetime warranty).
EOS - End of Support (removed from support by developers - no firmware is released).

Also AVM Fritz!Box has a pretty useless list which just tells the end of customer support. But there is a pretty detailed Wikipedia page available:

They as well use two different terms:
EOM (End of Maintenance)
EOS (End of Support)

Btw. there is also a Wikipedia page List of networking hardware vendors where you can dig through, maybe there are more lists to find.

Are we considering third-party firmware here?

No. This thread is about router manufacturers ending support (end of life) for the routers they manufacturer - as the title and text of the opening post note.

Third-party firmware surely would not be official, thus not supported by the manufacturer. If you want to discuss 3rd party firmware, please start a new thread for that.

I thought it important users understand why up to date routers... ...matter.

Yes, keeping routers current matters but then that implies the manufacturers are still providing updates - thus support has not ended. That said, I cannot speak for all SOHO type routers but my current NetGear, my last NetGear, and the Linksys I had before that all checked for updates automatically by default.
