Hi there,
I have Rift S too. It's been almost a year now.
I think it's a great VR system, I'm really enjoy it beside my Oculus Go and Oculus Quest 1 (of course for different purpose).
Compare to the original Rift (CV1), the motion sensor change so much as now Rift S is only using in-out lens sensor, so you don't have to install and setup your satellite sensor with those awful USB cables.
Also compare to my previous Rift CV1, I think Rift S has better image quality. Less screen door effects and better clarity. Even only 80hz of refresh rate.

The most important thing is during first installation of your Rift S, don't forget to make sure that your USB3 driver already install properly or you will found blank screen issue on your HMD (You may hear sounds, but no image on your HMD screen; just blank screen).
For some AMD system you will need to install AMD driver (for Intel system, it run fine out of box with generic USB3 that come with Windows 10 ~ at least build 1903).

I hope you will enjoy and have a great time with your Rift S.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, mate.

Cheers,
Chris

I went from the original Oculus Rift to the Oculus Quest 1 and also have the Sony PSVR.

The Oculus Rift S has undergone a price drop to ~$299 USD and that is a boon but the Rift S has also been discontinued. So given that its EOL the wiser option likely would be the Oculus Quest 2 which will likely be better supported from this point on and will likely receive feature upgrades such as fully wireless PCVR, 120Hz and more.

I'm not trying to say you shouldn't buy the Rift S or that you won't be happy with it but at this late stage many are recommending against such a purchase (in favor of the Quest 2).

If I were buying one now, I'd probably opt for the Quest 2.

I understand that you've already made the purchase and I'm sure the Rift S is a worthwhile upgrade from the Oculus Rift CV1.No matter what you're getting an upgrade.

Having gone from the Oculus Rift to the Quest, I'd say that while the inside-out hand / controller tracking is fairly good, it still isn't as good as the original Oculus Rift outside-in tracking (when configured properly). I'm referring to performance here not ease of setup.

I don't have the Oculus Quest 2 but as I understand it, it uses similar tracking (as the Rift S / Quest) so there likely won't be any improvements there anyway. For PCVR though the battery should either remain charged or drain slower when tethered to the PC. Also its easy enough to use a stand alone battery and either mount it to the Quest 2 head strap or slip it in a packet.

As for comfort the Oculus Quest 2 already has more third-party accessories with respect to head mounting then I've seen for the Rift, Rift S or Quest. That's not surprising either because the original Quest has been discontinued too.

Oculus is essentially saying that the Quest 2 is the one to rule them all (for now) so to speak and third parties are responding with their accessories,....

Oculus Quest 2 actually is NOT a fully wireless PCVR; it's a wireless standalone VR (semi mobile VR).
Yes, you can using it wirelessly with PC; but still using unofficial 3rd party apps. (e.g ALVR and Guys Godin's Virtual Desktop). But actually it just streaming the compressed video captures (h.264 or h.265) from PC to your HMD, compare it to Rift S that transmit the raw images data (uncompressed video) directly to your HMD (it's even require a proper Display-port to make sure there are enough bandwidth for raw video data). The image quality on Rift S still much higher than that "compressed video streaming" on Quest 2 via wireless or even with Oculus Link cable. You will notice artifacts in some dimmed scene (shadows area) or some particles objects that move so fast (snowflakes, bush, etc.). Some blurry in fast moving scenes. And that "compressed"/encode video process also still take a small time/delay, so you will found the controller is not so responsive as on Rift S (lag input). And it getting worse if you don't have beefy PC to handle that encoding video process.

I dare to say it because 1 week ago, I was helping my friend to setup her Oculus Quest 2 with her Oculus-Link cable, and then setup her Quest 2 with a "side load" patch for Virtual Desktop so she can play it wirelessly (Oculus still ban Virtual Desktop with wireless streaming supported from their Oculus Store, you should install it with "adb side load" or SideQuest).
Yes, the image quality streaming Quest 2 from PC to HMD via Oculus-Link now is slightly better than Quest 1 but still far far away from Rift S (with raw uncompressed images).
And it getting even worse when we are using wireless connection with ALVR or Virtual desktop through AC or AX WiFi router, the lag input or jitters getting more noticeable!

If you don't care about images quality though your HMD screen, and you aimed the freedom of movement... I agreed Oculus Quest 1 and 2 is good. No cable required.
But in term of image quality, I'm still cannot enjoy with that "streaming compressed video" thing on Quest 1 and Quest 2.
Not yet. Maybe later on Quest 3 or Quest 4 with better technology of video encoding/decoding? I’m still not sure about that.
If you pursuit better image quality than Rift S, then you can purchase HP Reverb G2 (with twice price).

Sure,....

Totally agree 100%.

Fair points all around,....

However, that isn’t really what I was referring to. I’ll put another way. I also wouldn’t really be interested in buying an original Oculus Rift after the release of the Rift S and the Quest 1. It’s also worth point out that no matter which Oculus (FB) VR HMD you choose, you are most certainly making a compromise. For example, going from the original Oculus Rift to the Rift S you lost the darker richer black levels and traded some percentage of hand / controller tracking (outside-in to inside-out) quality for ease of setup.

Buy an Oculus , any Oculus, prepare to compromise. Don’t want to compromise, buy at a higher price point.

The point I’m making really is more like:

There is nothing wrong with buying a Rift S (or Quest 1) now but it’s a little like buying an original Rift after the Rift S and Quest 1 were released. Regardless of the performance, you have to wonder how long and how well it will be supported after it’s successor has already hit the market.

I love my rift S to bits, but being partially disabled these days (legs) i dont get much time to use it.

Upside: you can re-calibrate your room setup in 30 seconds
downside: the software is a huge download and disk space hog, for some reason.

I get no motion sickness or problems with the unit, it was a huge evolution over the original vive and HP WMR i had prior.

Yupe, it's included 3 VR demo/tutorials (Oculus Dreamdeck, Oculus First Steps, Oculus First Contact) and also Oculus Home (the environment also huge!).
They should give us an option to unchecked / not install it and let us just install driver and dashboard only at the beginning.

But I have to admit, that 3 Oculus VR tutorials apps also useful when you are trying to introduce VR world and VR experience to your relative.
Beside TheBlu and VR-p*rn, of course... LOL! =))

When I bought the original Oculus Rift it came with three games (Lucky's tale, RoboRecall and one other which I forget). That alone with the Oculus software was a huge download.

When I bought the Oculus Quest 1, it came with three free games too. The Star Wars VR Series Vader Immortal in addition to the Oculus software were a fairly large download.

I won't buy Oculus games because I'd prefer to buy Steam VR games (and the option of buying a non-Oculus HMD) but I will take free Oculus games.

Software Windows 10 2004
just had my first hour of play of no mans sky with the S and it deff a step up from the rift ,sharper and i think its kinder on me old 1080, im going to have a hour on FO4VR . its sits on my head nice but ive got to fine tune the eye distance cos it dont feel quite right.
You may set the IPD from Oculus Device Settings (Rift S is using single screen, so there is no manual IPD adjustment)

my IPD is 72mm. I measure it with an iPhone app. (EyeMeasure).
It's prefect view for me :)

they've got virtual surround which is quite handy for most games, they're not for music
