Hi, I'm looking for some advice on a GPU for my gf's son, who is going to get/inherit my previous computer.

His current one is this:
- Intel Core i5-4690
- ASUS H97M-E (Intel H97)
- ASUS GTX 750 Ti
- Crucial 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM

My previous comp which he will get:
- Ryzen 5600X
- Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite, Socket-AM4
- G.SKILL Ripjaws V 32GB (2x 16GB) DDR4-3600MHz CL16 [F4-3600C16D-32GVKC]
- Noctua NH-D15
- Corsair HX750i 750W

What I'm really in doubt of is what GPU I should advise him to get (he will pay for that himself).
The games he plays now are really not heavy on the GPU at all (as far as I know): Fortnite, Rocket League, Forza Horizon 4, Roblox.

But the thing is, we have no idea what games he will play in a year or so. He's 11 now, so things/interests could change quickly.
I have made a small table with some GPU prices in my region. If you think they're high it's because they include import (our currency is weak) and Norwegian VAT, which is 25%.
I converted the Norwegian price directly to USD just so you have something a bit more familiar to compare with.

So here's what I'm thinking: Why don't we just go for the 2nd hand 1080Ti, especially given Gamer's Nexus's newest video. And then if/when he want's to play more demanding in a couple of years we could go for something like a 2nd hand 4070Ti or something similar maybe?

Any thoughts appreciated. :)

Possibly stupid question: What's the issue if it has been used for mining?

Fans could be worn out and/or the VRAM could be worn out. It could also have a 'mining' BIOS which you will need to flash back to a gaming BIOS.

The 1080ti will have the shortest driver support which is something you may wish to consider. Good card though and I too watched the Nexus video today.

of the cards listed I’d prob opt for the 6700XT as will have driver support for years and that extra VRAM will probably come in handy in time.

that said, the 1080ti will always hold a resale value far past its ‘worth’ due to people’s perception of it long after the 6700 will be forgotten.

Hmmm, that's a good point. I wonder how long the 1080Ti will have support.

Roblox games can be played on virtually any video card, and Rocket League has very low graphics requirements.

But Forza Horizon and especially Fortnite need a decent GPU, particularly with all the details cranked up. Either a 7600XT or a 4060 will be able to run FH4 maxed out in 1080p with 100 fps. Fortnite with maximum eye candy (but no ray tracing) will get 50+ fps on these cards.

Do you happen to know the boy's monitor resolution?

Hmmm, well not so sure about FH4. That seems relatively easy to run. Watch this HUB video where he gets 132 fps avg. with a Core 8700K + 1080Ti.
Don't know a lot about Fortnite but I saw a video where a 5600G + 1080Ti yielded well over 100 fps (can't exactly remember the settings though).

I think he's using a 1080p monitor, but I will double check.

I would go for the 6700 XT, or perhaps a used 6800 XT.

You have the 7700XT in your list, what about the 4060 Ti? Unavailable? This is a card you can also look at, no?

The Ultra preset in FH4 is far from maxing out the settings. The 1080Ti has roughly the same performance as a 4060/7600XT, so any of these cards will be more than enough for the game (unless 144+ fps is the target).

Fortnite has been running on UE5 for two and a half years now, and the requirements have increased accordingly. It takes more than these cards for constant 60 fps in 1080p on Epic presets, even without RT. But obviously everything can be tweaked to run on weaker hardware.

Thanks for all input guys :)
Looking at different reviews and taking all things into consideration: I think I will recommend he gets a 6700XT.

Not really that appealing, since I can get a 7700XT for the same price, which (in benchies that I have seen) is faster in most games. While the 6700XT isn't too far behind the 4060 Ti.

EDIT: It's a close call. Really any of these cards can/could be the right one depending on the games/resolution. I just have to make a decision, and 6700XT is it.
