Hello guys, i’m trying to undervolt my new laptop using throttlestop but i’ve fivr options greyed because there is the undervolt protection.
I’m trying to disable it but i cannot find the CFG Lock Id inside the DXE_driver_setup IFR.
These are the values inside the file: 0xA2F2D One Of: Enable/Disable Overclocking Lock (BIT 20) in FLEX_RATIO(194) MSR , VarStoreInfo (VarOffset/VarName): 0x49, VarStore: 0x2, QuestionId: 0x1E7, Size: 1, Min: 0x0, Max 0x7, Step: 0x0 {05 91 B5 06 B6 06 E7 01 02 00 49 00 10 10 00 07 00}
0xA2F3E One Of Option: When set, will map IO_read instructions sent to IO registers PMG_IO_BASE_ADDRBASE+offset to MWAIT(offset), Value (8 bit): 0x0 (default) {09 07 B7 06 30 00 00}
0xA2F45 One Of Option: CFG Lock, Value (8 bit): 0x1 {09 07 B8 06 00 00 01}
0xA2F4C One Of Option: Configure MSR 0xE2[15], CFG Lock bit, Value (8 bit): 0x2 {09 07 B9 06 00 00 02}
0xA2F53 One Of Option: Interrupt Redirection Mode Selection, Value (8 bit): 0x7 {09 07 BA 06 00 00 07}.

As you can see there is only the overclocking lock id (0x49).
Could you help me to find also the cfg lock id?

You cannot undervolt 12th Gen or newer H series mobile CPUs. This very useful feature was removed or disabled by Intel. Only the HX series still support undervolting.

Cfg lock enabled or disabled makes no difference to these processors.

Really? There is no way to unlock Undevolt like previous generations?
I had the same problem with 10th and 11th solved by uefi boot.

Look at the FIVR window. Does it say Not Available?

10th and 11th Gen show Locked which can be unlocked. 12th Gen are not the same. There is no known way to undervolt 12th Gen and newer H series.

Yes , is greyed and there is "not available".
Wtf! Any suggestions to reduce the temperature in other way except replace thermal paste?

replace thermal paste
That might not make much of a difference. The heatsinks are usually not adequate to run these CPUs at their full rated speed especially when the GPU is active.

You can try adjusting Speed Shift Max in the TPL window to slow the CPU down.

There are no known tricks for the H series processors, BIOS or otherwise. HX is for enthusiasts. Intel decided to sub divide their markets so they could squeeze a few more bucks out of users. I would avoid 12th Gen and newer laptops with locked down H series processors.

I asked to Intel and Asus to unlock the Undervolt option with negative response, it's a shame that we can't do what we want with products that we purchased.

Hi,
Hate to go off reservation but any issues with amd 7840HS beside not needing throttle stop maybe hehe ?

unlock the Undervolt option
There is nothing to unlock. The undervolt feature was permanently disabled / removed / fused off by Intel.

amd 7840HS
I know nothing about the other side. All I know is that Intel's 12th Gen and newer mobile processors can create a lot of heat if allowed to run at full speed and full power. Very few laptops have adequate cooling to manage this heat. Thin and light sells. Adequate cooling does not.

Just wanted to confirm and say that I spent 30+ hours doing an insane amount of research on this and it is physically impossible to undervolt 12th gen and newer H-series laptop CPUs - a deliberate decision by Intel to handicap their products. Disabling CFG and overclocking lock will allow you to modify the turbo ratio limits (potentially gaining a bit more multicore performance on laptops that can sustain high amounts of CPU power), but it will not allow undervolting.

I would recommend getting an HX series laptop as some still allow undervolting and overclocking (I know Legions do, some other lines like Omen do not), and also generally have higher CPU power and thermal headroom, allowing for a better experience overall (except on battery). I've used a Legion Pro 5i with i7-13700HX after switching from an i7-12700H TUF F15 6 months ago and am so much happier with my overall performance.

P.S. Lenovo disabled undervolting for HX CPUs in their latest BIOS update, so I'm not sure if this is a bug or something they intend to continue in the future. If so, do not get a 2024 or later model Legion if you want to undervolt. Luckily I was able to roll back the update and get undervolting back, but it looks like manufacturers are trying to phase out undervolting for some unknown and likely stupid reason.

Thank you for sharing these info. For now I'm playing games that don't stress too much the CPU and with AC "undervolt" I'm able to have a 80° average.

I didn't do the AC loadline because I heard it would degrade your CPU faster and barely made a difference, but if it's helping for you that's great. Temperatures aren't everything also. My TUF F15 throttled the CPU to 25 W during games due to the insufficient charger brick, which meant it ran at low temperatures, but I was losing tons of performance. Make sure your GPU is maxed out at 100% (using MSI Afterburner overlay) and then you know CPU throttling isn't happening - at least to an extent that matters.
