she needs one that's small, with good contrast viewing angle, and is small cuz she needs to have it closer to her face to see good enough...

her message to me about it:
thought I would really want OLED, But it turns out that those have built-in dimming mechanisms, so they can never reach full white on more than 50% of the screen at a time! They auto-dim & it can't be turned off! As an attempt to prevent burn-in or something...

IPS looks like the next best bet, but it can't do true black & I need muh contrast... It's hard to find something with actual good color for graphic work, but also no motion blur/ghosting for gaming...

And I actually want it to be small cuz I gotta have it really close to my face (even before all these eye issues started, but especially now), & if it's too big, then even with supposedly good viewing angle, it still will have color or contrast distortion.

But the 17-19" (diagonal) or so ones I keep finding are "portable" & tend to be low quality. Bragging about "astounding" 1,000:1 aspect ratio for the high-end ones.

What she wants doesn’t exist. What are her actual priorities? Because “small (how small we’re talking at maximum?), great angles (so not VA), great contrast (so VA), no motion blur/ghosting” is just not a thing in a standalone monitor. Laptops can hit some of those points though, as mentioned above. Doesn’t help that desktop screens are mostly developing in 27-inches and up form factor. Sizes less than that are using panels years old.

That would be mini-LED though, as in - an IPS screen with mini-LED backlight for FALD. Micro-LED isn’t a thing in consumer products yet and won’t be for a while.

If she need her face to be up close to the monitor, why are you concerned about the viewing angle? Sorry, but that makes no sense. A wide viewing angle is for people who view the screen from way off to the side, not from the center of the screen. It seems to me viewing angle should be the least of your concerns.

Maybe some glasses with x3 magnification ? ( reading glasses maybe ). As for a monitor maybe you need to find a shop selling them and check some out.

I like IPS monitors to seem a little sharper to me.

"I need muh contrast" lmao :D

I would say she needs a glass panel IPS, very rare these days, but Dell used to sell a 21.5" 1080p IPS glass 60hz. I had one for awhile, but left it at grad school cause I was just depressed back then.

The glass made the contrast really nice on the eyes though, and the color popped well too.

So basically if you can find a "glossy/glass coating" IPS it may be alright. also there is new IPS that Dell invented that has 2000:1 contrast, its pricey though.

Dell didn’t invent anything, they don’t even make LCD panels. IPS Black is a new type of panel by LG. It’s also not that great, honestly, subjectively speaking. It’s no VA contrast, that’s for sure, let alone OLED. Motion clarity is also not impressive. Second gen should be here by the end of the year, though, so we’ll see what that brings. But paying what, near 500 bucks last I checked?, for the “entry” U2724D is just not worth it.

Honestly, it might be worth grabbing the AOC Q27G3XMN. It’s a VA, so contrast is p.gud. It’s 180hz with decent motion performance, so blur/ghosting will be minimal. The viewing angles won’t be outstanding, but for her use-case more than adequate. Colors are fine and can be excellent after calibration (since she mentioned color work she must own a colorimeter, right?). And most importantly - in most places it’s fairly decently priced, 300-350 bucks, often below. So a good option - won’t be the best at everything, but decent overall, won’t break the bank and no issues that would be gamebreaking.

Thanks for the correction, I can't keep up with it.

My vote still goes to an IPS with glass panel, I know they can be found still, just have to check around. Dough makes them still, but I'm not sure what models.

Probably can find a glass panel on eBay as well. just type in glass panel monitor. I dunno

That monitor is 27inches diagonally, so it's not small by any stretch.

It's VA which doesn't have good viewing angles.

Here's a review -

What she probably needs is a high resolution, crisp display that's not too large.

Here's one I've been planning to get for work once I get the approvals in place -

LG 24QP550 - It's 24inch, IPS, 1440p, very decent stand, no frills. There's a version with USB C port if you want one.

Other revisions include: 24QP500, 24QP750

if she has bad eyes, the last thing you want to do is make the text smaller, which that resolution and size will be.

23.8" 1080p is probably better in this case, but really I have no idea each person likes different things.

This monitor in the color pastel blue or pastel pink, is on pre-order for $149, worth a try maybe? I have used Pixio in the past and never had issues. If contrast is not up to her standards, then I guess she can return it and spend a little more on the mini-LED 27" that was linked before, but you said small screen, so I don't know what small means to her.

Was thinking along these lines, but there was a desire voiced for a low blur motion performance. A standard office-grade 75hz IPS won’t have that, unfortunately.

Scaling exists, for one, and higher pixel density can actually be better for reading. That 1440p 24 incher can easily be run at 125% scaling and you’d get essentially 24 inch 1080p sizes of GUI with clearer text. Would require Windows 11 (or MacOS) since before that scaling implementation is woeful.
