Noob looking to watercool RTX 4080 Super

Hi,

I want to build my first watercooling loop mainly because:

1st I want to free the PCI-E slot that my MSI 4080 SUPER 16G GAMING X TRIO’s fan is obstructing.

2nd have a quasi-silent build

Temperatures are not really a concern.

As an amateur I’m wondering if there’s a low budget block, I could buy for my GPU that’s likely to be supported by later GPUs? Or one has to buy a new block every time there’s a GPU change?

Regards,

No such thing as a reusable block, every new GPU is going to need a different block.

Bykski makes cheap blocks, haven't used one though.

Corsair offers Icue reusable blocks. But without info on hole distance on 50 series and Gddr 7 being bigger hard to predict the compatibility. Vrm area remains uncovered.

For noise, cheaply, you'd be better off deshrouding and zip tying normal case fans onto the card.

Custom watercooling isn't cheap, so if you go that route properly there will be costs, or products that have cut corners and don't perform well/could leak etc.

The universal blocks have downsides, primarily poor VRM and VRAM cooling, as well as no guarantee of future compatibility.

Inno3D makes a 4080 Super prefitted with Alphacool block in the factory - Frostbite.

Where do you live? That could have a huge impact on Water cooling pricing. As an example if you live in Europe you have access to Alphacool and they most likely have a Waterblock for your card. If you live in the US you can use Aquatuning. If you live in Canada you will use Corsair but there is no guarantee that your GPU will be supported.

If you want the easiest way to get into Watercooling then look for the GPU AIOs from Alphacool. At least you would still be able to keep the rad.

If money is no object you can look at EK.

If you trust Ali Express you can use Byiski.

Don't buy those universal GPU blocks. Was okay 15 years ago when video cards only drew a max 60watts and was basically passively cooled. Now the VRM and vram is as important.

EKWB is the most expensive, byiski is the cheapest, questionable sourcing of materials and zero instructions. your kinda completely on your own for assembly.

I've been getting more alphacool blocks lately.

You'll have to check but 4080, 4090 and Supers use the same PCB layout (and pcb on some vendors). Might be able to find a cheap 4080 block that will fit that super.

Submitted a request to send my GPU through https://shop.alphacool.com/en/send-it-and-get-one-cooler-for-free maybe I'll a get a block for free.

There's several companies that make blocks for that card. Barrow, Byski, EK, Corsair, Thermaltake, that a quick Google brought up. The cheapest are Barrow and Byski from AliExpress for $120-130 (or add $60-$80 if purchased in the states), usually 3-4 week shipping to the US. You can find installation instructions online if they aren't included with the block (they generally are now). You'll then need a d5 or ddc pump/res combo $100-$150 depending on size, 240 gts rad and fans $75ish, tubing and fittings $50. $325-350 all told can build a loop for your GPU on the cheap.

Thanks for this concise answer, that's what I was looking for.

I have no idea why they would provide it for free, but I went to look at alphacool's site and it says if you send them your Super PCB, they'll make a cooler for it for free...(EU only)

Edit: Which I apparently missed has already been mentioned and is no longer valid...woops.

So they can build a design over someone's card, then sell to every other owner of such a card, without having to use their resources to get such a card in the first place.

it says if you send them your Super PCB, they'll make a cooler for it for free...(EU only)
Sadly, they replied "Until the next generation of Nvidia 5XXX and AMD 8XXX we are not going to produce new coolers"

@wNotyarD oof...reading fail on my part. I missed that. Thread was only one page long, I should have read all the posts (read the first few and then skimmed I guess). I had checked a couple sites looking for a suggestion, saw that ad and thought it was cool so I jumped right into posting lol. Woops.

Shoulder vrm and VRAM with little copper heatsinks with a little bit of airflow be sufficient for cooling?

No problems. Fault's on Alphacool that didn't remove the banner on their website.

You need lots of active cooling, as in a 92-120mm fan attached to the card/heatsink blowing directly on to it. Otherwise, you risk damaging your GPU.

Mo Ra radiators are great.

Look into HardwareLabs, they're the benchmark for standard format radiators for performance. Corsair offers rebranded rads with HWLabs as the OEM.

Generally I'd recommend two/three 360/420 mm radiators over a square format 3x3 radiator.

Despite the whole discussion here about details: watercooling + high-end component + low-budget = :banghead:.
I'm afraid if you want to go that way, you'll have to pay the price :nutkick:.

Regarding future proof full cover waterblocks, absolutely no guaranty. Every little change in a PCB and/or location of a SMD will have impact on the geometry of the full cover block to make it fit and function.

If the PC hobby costs too much, find an alternative like taking a pottery class, they do have a vacancy as I was just kicked out......:D

But for freeing a PCI-e slot, do you have the possibillity to user a riser cable and relocate the graphics card with a vertical mount? Didn't get which MB and which case you have.

Hope I don't get banned for the teapot :fear:here also, just couldn't resist

You will create more problems with custom watercooling than you will solve.

With a quick overclocking+undervolting, your 4080S will run quieter than the noise floor of your room.

Buy a PCIe extension for your 1st PCIe slot will solve your initial problem anyways

Edit, your GPU is already insanely quiet at stock that watercooling will not beat

Tried a riser already, it's a too tight of a fit
