To complicate the issue, I think reducing temperature variations may actually be more important than just reducing temperature as variations lead to solder fatigue. So a clever graphics card may try to keep the temperature up under low loads (by using low fan speeds) in anticipation of higher loads.

Of course this would imply highish idle temperatures, which might freak people out.

You betcha. Most people can’t vent a hot GPU fast enough before it starts to affect other components. That’s why I always say more intake than exhaust. That extra intake will cool the warmed air and push it out through the vents and exhaust fan while causing a minimal temperature rise throughout the case.

I'm surprised people are even astonished at these results, the Noctua FD1 kit released what, last year?

I think I would duct a downdraft CPU cooler and maybe a blower like my A2000, but it's less useful/borderline useless for all of the axial cooler GPUs out there. FE is kinda a mix of both so the improvement is understandable.

In my S3 the FC140 already has a pretty clear airflow path from intake to exhaust. Running a duct would negate much of the good cooling that the RAM and SO-DIMM.2 receive in this case.

Heck, even Thermalright made a duct for Le Grand Macho RT, let alone every other ducted solution that has been made since the dawn of personal computing :D

They do have their place though..

workshop case has a little funnel that sits right on top of the (intel) cooler, similar to this
proxy-image.jpg

it's from an old HP machine that takes standard mATX mobos, heatsink is also insanely good compared to a stock cooler, that machine is rocking an overclocked P4 541 and never goes over 50C with the funnel installed, without it can easily hit 65+ so it's an interesting drop. I didn't install a 2nd fan so all the suction is done by the CPU fan. front has a single 80mm but it's not like it can do much, it only cools the HDD a bit.

I'm a little embarrassed; I'm triggered.
(Wait... At some point he says it right! )

Those aren't 'vents', they're 'ducts'... Ducting to the vents in the case.

Also, this technique has been standard on more OEM/ODM desktop PCs than I can count.

I also used to do this....

not going to lie, I really do miss the older cases that had fans on the side case. I had a corsair carbide 500r case that had a 200mm side fan, and I had a really fine dust filter for it imported from South Africa. its all in the trash now. it was too heavy for me many many years ago, i dropped it and busted it all up. lesson learned. sadly can't find anything like that anymore, so have to go with shitty hot glass, but yeah i miss my 500r a lot, was a great case. sucks being an idiot your whole life, but eh i do learn from my lessons at least. i haven't dropped a case since and more careful in that regard. would love to get my hands on another 500r case though. :(

I spot a Thermalright XP90. The correct choice.

But yeah, ducting isn't new. Look at literally all of the OEM workstations on the market. Plastic ducting everywhere.

the choice of airflow was questionable. CPU should be a direct passthrough the front and the back. no strange shapes

if the video card is on vertical stand and mitx motherboard is used it could be a passthrough design in from the side out the other side and the back in the case of blower.

Airflow should always be front to rear.. those that deviate are cases for aesthetics, liquid cooling, or BTX style mounting.

And of course, the LQ type that needs many mods to be useable :D

please don't overexcite him with talk of thermalright heatsinks, I genuinely fear someday he is going to turn his Christmas tree into thermalright nvme heatsink ornaments, and his heatsink collection at the bottom instead of presents, and then his family is going to be pissed at all of us in this forum for letting it go too far.

And of course, the LQ type that needs many mods to be useable

I don't know what LQ means

Low Quality

I know he was, I was making a joke, and you just proved my point of the joke even more and I can't stop laughing. bloody hell lol

not going to lie though, would have never tried thermalright if it was not for you. and i am super impressed at the $43 i paid for this thing, the packaging was 10/10, the cooling has been 10/10, i like the stock fans too

clearly coming from this mitx oriented guy to me it seems like he's mocking ATX cases, the whole point is to show how wacky it can get. not something to admire, with the top fans as an intake and how complicated it is when the mitx solves most of it when the video card goes directly into the side panel. He just wanted to print something on his expensive printer, well could you print a MITX case then. problem solved.

For sure, he did the math, spent the time and money on it. I didn't watch the whole video.. but he got some decent gains. Fans can make or break a setup for a lot cheaper

not going to lie though
There have been quite a few people to try because of my word. Almost everyone has had a good experience.. a few haven't, and I feel bad every time because it was my word. Cant win em all I guess.

Rotated layouts like Silverstone has done are the biggest exception to this. It's not chart topping these days, but my nearly 15 year old Fortress FT02 likely still sits among the best. 540mm of fans and an unimpeded air path sure does the trick.

Query:
Would a reverse-flow optimized case work 'better' in an (open front) cabinet or media centre? Exactly that came up talking w/ a friend, ~2 days ago.

I’m nitpicking but this is still technically front to back airflow (fellow FT02 owner )
