Maybe a bit early, but I'm optimistic... :D

My plan was to upgrade my Z690 platform/i7 12700K this year with a i7 14700K but I reconsidered and may wait for intel Arrow Lake and doing a i7(?) Arrow Lake build later this year.
(If intel will release Arrow Lake this year and when all looks positive that is...)

It will be a build with not much RGB. Quality & Performance = Key.

CPU Cooler: Since it will be compatible with the new intel socket, I will be re-using my Noctua NH-U12A for my new build.

Motherboard: Z890 , (probably a Gigabyte Aorus Master E-ATX) ~ TBD

Memory: TBD

Storage: Re-using what I have with a possible new M.2 NVMe for the OS , TBD.

Case: My current Be Quiet! Silent Base 600 Window case from 2016 that I'm still using today will be replaced with a new Be Quiet! Dark Base Pro 901

PSU
: A new PSU, my current 750W Seasonic Focus Plus will be replaced with a Be Quiet! Straight Power 12 1200W (Unless there will be an updated Straight Power 13 later this year).

GPU: Keep using my RTX 2070 Super, will be upgraded once GTA 6 PC version is out in 2026~2027.

That's it for now...

A lot may change until new Intels arrive, but for now I don't like two choices:

Dark Base 901 costs, but is only decent case with few significant to me flaws. I would expect from a case for such price being just flawless, because cheaper ones manage. Long story short it defends only with charger and inverted layout, so you have to value them the most.

After my experience with Dark Powers 12 and 13 and them having humming/rattling fan easily audible from like meter or two away, I would suspect Straight Powers being the same due to, if I recall, them using the same fan, but just mounted differently. You will easily find online such complaints about DP13, even audio samples showing what I talk about, so better check if no similar with SP12.

Dark Powers 12 and 13 and them having humming/rattling fan

I know, I was reading it in the reviews, the Straight Power 12 seems unaffected.

I think it will be a similar in performance to the 14th gen, but a new socket. Will Intel keep it around for more than 1 generation? Who knows.

You think, because it doesn't have HT?
We just don't know yet.

Aren't you planning quite far ahead? I also plan to upgrade platforms this year (only likely to an AMD X3D one) but it's too early to settle the details when most of those will remain unknown until the stuff has launched (or is about to at earliest). I can definitely make a broad idea of what I want. I imagine I'll be looking at a 9800X3D with 96 GB or 128 GB RAM on some AM5 motherboard, but... beyond that it's what?

How will AMD and intel's competing lineups look once the Zen 5 X3D has launched, which is likely to be after the rest of Zen 5 and probably Intel's upcoming stuff too? Performance? Price? What is Zen 5 even going to look like on all details? What about Intel's stuff? We're still in the dark on those and can only make guesses as to how they will be. What motherboards will be available? New chipsets? Which one is needed? Or any other minor considerations with motherboards? With me needing a lot of RAM and high capacities being more difficult to drive at higher speeds, DIMM counts, ranks, and especially on DDR5, any considerations there? Will higher capacity DIMMs come out by then, and will prices on RAM change?

You're looking at half a year or more for this stuff I imagine. Trying to lock in details that far ahead isn't practical, especially for unreleased stuff.

You can probably go ahead with stuff like case and PSU planning though.

I have the Dark Base Pro 900 (version 1), and it's still a nice looking case. They fixed all the things I had complaints about in the version 2, and then the 901 is even better still. It's not as flashy as several others out there, but I kind of like that.

I have a Straight Power 12 1200W and I can't hear it at all. They even sent me the new open rear panel piece for my case because the 1200W supply has a C19 instead of a C13 and the standard case adaptor doesn't work (it had a small extension plug that allowed mounting the PSU inward a little).

On the motherboard, I've been watching the higher end ASRock boards for a couple years and I really like what they do with the Taichi Lite versions...they lose a little bit of the extra bling (plastic panels) I don't care about, keep the VRM specs, and offer a cheaper, cleaner looking board. I have not, however, actually used one before. I just know that unlike my last several motherboards, my next one won't be an EVGA...so I've been trying to just think about what's next.

probably 6 cores with no HT and a bunch of cinebench acclerators are not very attractive considering that you need to buy a new motherboard.

Right, couldn't find any complaints about noise or rattling with this PSU, so it seems ok.

@P4-630 Don't even show me this 6-pole motor marketing ;) I told you my own experience and btw personally used for few years their 6-pole Silent Wings 3 140mm as case fans. They were nice performers, but funny thing unusually loud in terms of motor noise. Really, cheap fans coming with cases tend to be quieter in this regard. be quiet! is a brand focusing their marketing on silence, but it doesn't make their products doing well in this regard.

Review-wise, I red plenty of Dark Power 13 reviews and none mentioned this PSU's rattling and humming when idle. Similarly with Dark Power 12 I've tried before. They check dBA at some loads and call it a day. Man can't blame them much, because this problem isn't loud, so dBA is low, but the tone is irritating. On the other hand user opinions will depend if their system are quiet enough to show it. There is "the gang of temperatures always too high" who run their fans like crazy even during idle. You can try your luck, but I really don't see any point of going those be quiet! PSUs ;)

Yep. I have no idea. Not even leaked info is around. But say it's 15% IPC uplift. Same core count, but lower frequency (Because who can 6.2Ghz). It will fall somewhere is the same area as a 14900K.

I'm still getting it either way. I like new stuff :)

I'm not getting a Dark Power...

I'm planning on a Straight Power 12 1200W as it stands now and have found no issues of rattling or annoying fan noise in various reviews for this PSU.

I have had a Straight Power 10 before and never heared the fan on that one either.

Fine, but as I said, you plan to get Straight Power 12 probably using the same fan. And you already got two users here claiming that their units are silent, so now you need to ask them how quiet are their computers to make sure there's no stuff covering PSUs noise ;)

Plus maybe make sure that word "silent" rather means "inaudible", so not "really quiet". E.g. Silent Wings 3 fans with their 6-pole motors weren't silent lol

Why are you considering a CPU upgrade and in the meantime, don't lean into the HEDT territory? What's wrong with 12700K?

New upcoming hardware upgrade itch... :D
If these upcoming Arrow Lakes are disappointing, I'll just get an i7 14700K, a new case and a new PSU.

Arrow Lake looks to be pretty major in terms of technologies used.

I just hope they OC well and have better memory controllers DDR5 only etc.

Ah, no real need. I get it. Arrow Lake doesn't seem to be the new Sandy Bridge FWIW though.

It's because it introduces so many new technologies that I reckon Raptors might hold their own in the "general performance" front, we've seen this scenario before (i7-4790K vs. i7-5775C), but we'll see. Right now if someone's looking for a straight upgrade for their PC and currently has a 12th gen or low-end 13th gen chip, is to just buy a i9-14900K (or even a 13900K at a low price). Otherwise it's time to hold for a bit, IMO.

And of course anyone with a 13900K and up should be concerned with a GPU upgrade only. The RTX 4090's far ahead of the pack, sure, but it's also almost 2yo and high-end Blackwell is likely going to wreck it

If it turns out that it isn't much better for various reasons then a i7 14700K I can still go for the i7 14700K. 13700K.

Lol, had to be done.
I'd have expected you to be rushing to get rid of the 2xxx GPU for sharply reduced 4xxx or possibly 5xxx.

Having similar thoughts myself. Only less optimistic and too late.

I have to wait for GTA 6 for that... :D

I can still play my most recent games @ 1440p with my 2070 Super , Wreckfest, Forza Horizon 5, Hot wheels unleashed, and the older GTA V.
